We are overrating high school recruiting on this board. Unless it is top-end talent like Flagg I would rather recruit portal players. Freshmen that aren't like Flagg just aren't ready to contribute at a high level. Then if they are of the quality of Freeman and Moore we will lose them by year 2 either pro or transfer. Freshmen aren't worth the time and effort. They should be looked at as bench players etc. Too many freshmen are not a good thing going forward.
We are also overrating on what the national reaction to firing Red at the end of the season would be. Nobody would care. We are irrelevant. It would be a scroll at the bottom of the screen.

Not true. He doesn’t make final decisions for JB recruits. He has three of his recruits on this team. Freeman, Moore and Petar. I don’t believe there’s a sophomore on this team.
The only Boeheim player left on this team is Bell, who he could have sent on his way like others last season. But didn’t. And again, every single one of the transfers are Red’s players too. In addition to the 3 players you mention. This entire roster is Red’s.

“Let him recruit his own players and let’s see what he does”

My guy - these are his own players. Every single one of them. Transfers, the freshmen/sophomores, and the survivors from Boeheim’s final year. He’s responsible for bringing all of them in - both directly and indirectly. This can’t continue to be used as an argument to keep Red.
Your making statements that are no longer true. The portal has changed everything. Every player on this team red recruited. This is red's team. And all these high school guys people want to develop will never make it 4 years here. Did you not see Miami's coach resign this week where he said he was shocked after final 4 run that majority of his team wanted to portal to test the waters. The game has changed where players are year to year deal. It's where college sports is at this point unfortunately

I think you’re replying to the wrong post, but yes I totally agree. That’s basically what I was saying to the original poster.

Syracuse hates a bad headline more than anything. Dumping Autry after year two is way too much bad press.

The headlines won’t be talking about how bad we are for all the reasons stated above.

They’ll be saying how he never got a fair shake after the HOF’er left plus JJ got hurt and now we messed up our next recruiting class and will Kiyan leave now too. Its not accurate but it gets clicks and views more than running stories talking about how the staff and players are just not good.

Really this whole season is a waste and we just need to turn the channel.

Unless Autry resigns, there’s a scandal, or the entire fanbase en masse just refuses to show up to the dome which they won’t then he’s back next year.

We should still demand a housecleaning this year but it’s not going to happen so buckle up.
If Red goes 12-22 and fails to make the ACCT, there will be zero criticisms of him getting fired. There may be more negative press questioning the school’s commitment to basketball if he isn’t fired after a season like that.

Red is not some proven coach with a long track record. Right now he’s taken over a historic program that’s been on a decade long decline and made it worse.

Do people care if the basketball program essentially dies so long as footballs good?

All these arguments about Red being entitled to a third year are INSANE.
I want both to be good. In reality, we should stand a much better chance of winning a NC in basketball, but it’s looking like football is the more likely scenario because we actually have a dynamic coach.

This isn't accurate. Bell is the only JB recruit and Red built this team around Bell... All portal and high school recruits this year are Red's. This is his team. Let that sink in...

I don’t see anyone saying he’s “entitled” to a 3rd year. I think the consensus is that it’s highly improbable because firing a coach after 2 years could be unprecedented in major college basketball. Even Guthridge and Doherty got 3 years each at UNC.

Add all the transfers. JJ and Chance, two players Red recruited, JB didn’t take them, they went elsewhere and then immediately transferred to SU when Red was made HC. Also Naheem. Cuffe and all the transfers this season. Bell is the only player left from JB’s teams.

Kenny Payne literally just got fired after 2 years

Maybe it’s just this really smooth bourbon but I just can’t help but think where Autry is now would be like if Fran started next year at 1-5 with a win over only Holy Cross. Both would be sophomore coaches.

Now the real difference is Autry last year went the equivalent of 5-7 or if you push it 6-6 in football terms but either way not close to the real postseason.

Fran went 10-3 his freshman year with little gameday coaching experience.

Both can recruit but only one can talk to recruits tomorrow and say they’re doing what they said they’d do.

Does Red have the booster support to withstand this? He didn’t start with a big base of support or a track record. Folks want to win and from what I’ve heard, he doesn’t prioritize schmoozing them like FB does. Melo cant have liked what he saw today either. I know the talent deficit was big when he took over and he’s recruiting well but he won’t get as much time given the portal these days. He wanted these guys and went after Eddie. They’re not delivering.

I think his ultimate failure was not hiring a trusted senior assistant to help him with in game decisions. He seems to have no feel for the flow of a game.

Whoops, good call. Forgot about that. So not unprecedented but it took an extreme level of failure. The guy went 4-28 and 8-24. Red has a 20-12 and TBD.

Note: I’m not advocating a 3rd year for Red, just that I can see where he most likely gets a 3rd year.

Up until a couple of weeks ago I thought a third year was a lock. Now I don't think it is. Red will have to have this team show some life this year and win some games.

Outside the CNY bubble, people vastly overestimate how much the brand carries these days nationally.

Yes, it's still the name, but this is not a program taken seriously currently. We saw that change quickly with football; the question is does JW have the stones to do it this soon? I'm still skeptical and expect a Year 3, despite the product.

Great question! This is spot on. I wonder if an experienced senior assistant would have helped? I thought Engelstad would have helped this season. Red needed a Phil Martelli, like Howard had at Michigan.

I had to laugh just because I feel like I have to do the same thing here. Whenever there is any positive notion on last year there needs to be a Note: I’m not advocating for Red year 3.
