If JB recommended Gerry, which is what I’ve heard, then it looks like he was right again and should’ve been listened to. Especially if we were staying in house with a first time head coach.
yes but it would have been very difficult to pass over the person sitting in the first assistant's seat.

Bullshit. I recall lots of people bringing it up, and pointing to the fact that Autry had been on the staff that had been part of the 8-year decline, and the fact that there wasn't player development that was evident. There were lots of red flags, let's not pretend otherwise.
agree about the player development. But we (you, anyone) know that he actually couldn't coach?

To me the biggest issue, even bigger than the ability of a guy on staff, was the idea of a continuity hire when we were coming off the worst basketball of JB's career.

You make a continuity hire when you're good, or at least trending up.

Making a continuity hire when we were bad didn't make basketball sense. And the people that pointed to Duke and UNC doing it seemed to fail to realize that their programs were in much different shape than ours.

If the goal of the continuity hire was to continue the trajectory we were on, I guess, mission accomplished?

Ha, it was a sarcastic post. At 0-6 another poster said it isn't time to panic. I said are you nuts? We're 0-6 against the P5, at what point are fire alarms going off.

So I just continue to point to this record as it continues, it's all snark.
I know it was..lol

And how did it work out? Do we have big donors of work now? The support of prominent former players? Are we recruiting well? Has the station of our program improved over the past 2 years since Red was hired, or declined?

I get JW we made a choice to avoid short-term pain, but it caused MORE pain down the road. And eventually we're going to end up doing the thing that we should have done initially, which is make a clean break, and then have a bigger hole to dig out of.

Also, and I can't believe I have to skate in this, but you know what? You can't please everyone. And sometimes you need to piss some people off to shed a controversial albatross that had been holding our program back. The alumni base, fans, boosters, and everyone will rally behind a program that is successful. The goodwill dries up when the program sucks, in the court sucks.

Oh well.

Dashers point was that he made the only decision he could. The administration and BOT had blocked a change previously and were only going to allow an internal hire if JB was forced out. There was no national search done because one wasn't going to be allowed, full stop.

I think there were lots of indicators that suggested that it was a massive risk, at best.

And not just one or two red flags, numerous.

But I agree, nothing was a certainty, there was also some reasons for optimism, but they were mostly predicated on non performance based criteria.

What’s amazing is that after 14 games we still can’t run an offense that has a purpose to get your best players quality shots. Defense is a complete disaster and it has been for two years. Whatever Red is trying to do, he isn’t getting it across to his team. It is what it is. JW is in a tough spot. Whatever he does, he better have a plan with Red or without him.

LOL We all know how it has worked out so far. But no one had the benefit of the results we are seeing now before they happened. And if you have been in corporate America, sometimes decisions are made above you. And for you. I'm not defending what we are seeing just that I understand it and if JW had pushed any earlier for JB'w removal, he might not have been the A.D. Think about the BOT and the ones you know.

right again? Like what was the first time? When he reneged on his time to leave? That time. The school better not listen to him about much of anything these days. He is the #1 reason we are in the situation we are in. His refusal to leave and not work the job the way it has to be worked. Turning the program in to Boeheim and sons instead of Syracuse University.

I am involved in c-suite / executive level decisions involving hiring / firing on an ongoing basis.

This is a performance driven profession. Performance matters. And should, more than relational considerations and " nice to have" evaluative criteria.

"Appeasement" is generally not an effective strategy.

too bad he didn’t remain. He’s better than this mess.

We would have more wins because JBs an excellent coach but still be staring at 4 years of no tourney. This is the argument people use about coach P. The issue wasn't that he was let go its that the subsequent hire was worse. In this case the school bumbled it completely and tied the ADs hands.

This long nightmare needs to end. Basketball hasn’t been ranked since 2018.
Lol..And I know people that still say syracuse basketball is an elite program.. I just let them believe it and don't try to reason with them anymore

The decision is on them. The BOT are losing a crap full of revenue with attendance tanking. This will be the first year that we never get over 20,000 for a game. They will have to come up with the $20.5 million they will have to play players next year. Maybe fans need to put the pressure on the BOT instead of JW.

Yeah, and I did it at a high level for a long time. Maybe you are lucky and not have to answer to CEO's and boards about things you know are wrong. Congrats and good for you if that is the case. It isn't always the case in corporate America. And you can find yourself in impossible positions.

Count me in. But how do you do that?

This is why I blame JB, held on too long and now we are in a crappy situation. There were no good solutions when he was let go, no good choices. This isn’t unusual, the best CEO’s know when to step down, the most selfish stay on. Hopefully JW structured a low buyout in Reds contract

I mean not really. Happens all the time. Pasqualoni was the LB coach.

they should’ve cleaned house and went outside. BUT, if not, they should’ve listened to the hall of fame coach who built the program and knew stuff.
