IMO there’s nothing wrong with wondering if this is a good recruit or not. And that’s the camp I’m in. When a kid doesn’t have high rankings everyone says, the rankings don’t mean anything look at his offer list. When the offer list is terrible and in fairness nobody was recruiting this kid really, we say, I trust the coaches. DB’s track record with WR’s is pretty abysmal overall. The amount of scholarship WR’s to production isn’t very good.

Maybe this kid is a diamond in the rough, which we also don’t proportionally have great luck with. Naming the outliers doesn’t show we are successful finding diamonds in the rough. I hope he’s successful and maybe he’s a solid ST’s contributor and we def need those.

But overall, I just don’t see it and there’s nothing wrong with having a different thought based on watching his tape a bunch along with the other factors.
I think this is very reasonable.

You are right. We have struggled to identify good WRs. Not sure if this is a failing of Dino, his WR coaches, his OCs or everyone. Probably more the latter.

The warning signs are many.

You mentioned the lack of P5 offers.

His weight is a concern.

Seems like 90-95% of his film is him running fly routes.

The level of competition in his film is...not super impressive.

I really only see meaningful thing that makes him stand out.

Speed. I think he faster that anyone on the team right now. By a fair amount.

Can he get his weight up to around 200? Doubtful. The staff we have has often struggled to get players ready to play at the P5 level.

And if he can get up to around 200, can he retain his speed? I hope so. Again, I don't see many examples of sprinters turned into football players by this strength and conditioning crew.

I think he is going to have to do a lot of the work himself. I hope he is willing to do that.

Agreed and I want nothing but to be wrong. He does have elite speed and that’s a good thing. We also have new coaches on offense and so past lack of success isn’t fair to the new coaching staff.

Donovan Brown, Umari Hatcher, Trabor Pena, D'Marcus Adams, Courtney Jackson and a bunch of other WRs in recent years have all shown they can run and catch but you have to be strong enough to hold your own against physical DBs. I think the heaviest of these guys is 181. That doesn't cut it these days. And you can add Cohoon to the list with his 175 weight.

None of these guys have ever emerged and I think it is largely because none of them were able to put on meaningful weight during their time at Syracuse. Not sure if this is on them or on the strength and conditioning staff. Way too many WRs do not progress physically during their time on the football team. Maybe we just needed a nutrition specialist to tell them to eat pancakes.

Not sure but something has to change if we are ever going to take the next step. Why does Wake always seem to have a bunch of big WRs who are jacked and physical as hell? Why can't we get a bunch too?

do we even know he is still 175.. the stories have that as his weight from 1-2 yrs ago as well , he could easily be 10lbs bigger now.

When I look at that last track highlight I dont see 175 unless everyone else out there was 150.

Donovan Brown is a redshirt freshman, it’s a little too early to write him off.
Guys like Jordan Addison, 173 lbs, and Zay Flowers, 182 lbs, while maybe the exception, show weight is not necessarily the be all end all. 5 of the top 10 WR draft prospects on CBS sports are 177 lbs or less.

It seems at least recently we have been trying to get some size. We have had success with Gadsden. Maybe Alford (6’6”, 211 lbs) or Isaiah Jones (6’4”, 204 lbs) can break out this year.

Art Monk was a track star in High School, only a part time receiver here , because we didn't pass much.
He added weight and became a pretty good receiver.
Go back and ask him how to gain weight.

It is fair to be skeptical, no SU fan wants any of our kids to fail, the track record of WR and OL development at SU has been pretty terrible in general. As mentioned we do have newer staff members(Johnson and Beck both year 2 will have the most influence on WR development) and SU did get into the 21st Century and hire a nutritionist , so hopefully development will improve at the position

Art was a RB who switched to WR to get PT.

If he was big enough to be a RB, then gaining weight to play WR wouldn’t have been a thing.

Did you see recent pics of him? He actually looked smaller than I realized.

We've struggled to bring in big body receivers. And the speed guys we've recruited have not developed physically. So I understand the concern about reed-thin track guys who get blown off their routes and out-muscled.

From limited highlights, however (with a lot of post routes), Cahoon had a couple plays where he stuck his foot in the ground and ran a tight route. He showed decent hands, a long radius with his size and vertical, and good concentration through the catch. Who knows ... but I think there's reason for optimism here.

You said "you trust the coaches." Have the insight to heed your words.

The kid is a incoming freshman and will probably redshirt. Give him a break, give him a chance to get on our new nutrition plan and get in on S&C for a year then see where he is at.

Old saying, you can not teach speed.

This is an entertaining thread, but why should Bryce Cohoon be expected to come in ready to play? If he contributes after a year or two that would be fine.

Good point.

Another point - Taj came in and set a new Frosh receiving record.

And that dude weighed like a buck-sixty dripping wet.

Sean Riley looked like an eighth grader ball boy had stolen a uniform and snuck onto the field, but he was very effective.

Guys don’t need to be yoked to be good at WR.

With all the talk about this kid you would think he was all world. He only catches about 50% of the balls thrown to him. I don’t care how fast he is, he has to give his QB confidence he will catch it when thrown to him.

Where is this coming from that be only catches 50% of the balls thrown to him?

And thankfully this is the area that can be improved by coaching and practice reps, even if it were true.

Lemon initially had terrible catching skills but by junior year was very good.

His highlight video doesn't show any drops. Where do you get your advanced metrics on this kid?

This is a scholarship similar to Marrone’s first recruiting class; where he had less than 2.5 months to recruit an incoming class and had booted a bunch of the roster.

We beat out Pennsylvania and Colgate, oh sorry, and Air Force. Oh, and Massachusetts.

His stats are decent but that’s playing 5A in Kansas, not 6A.

Of course guys can get bigger, we say that with every recruit we get. So are the guys they’re playing against. Listing some guys that played small is meaningless, they’re outliers. Small guys can be successful. They also tended to be really really good in H.S. too. They also tend to be overall freak athletes.

Listen, I hope this kid crushes it in a couple years. But as I’ve said before, this is a poor use of a scholarship when it’d be better served on a project OL at least. There’s nothing wrong with questioning this pick because other than speed, on a track, nothing screams out D1 WR.

This kid is 6'-2 and 185 lbs according to the Cuse.com bio. Looking at recent pics of him by no means would i consider him too skinny for a yet to be on campus freshman WR. Pics and vids I see of him on Twitter don't make him look like some super skinny receiver at all. And he doesn't look skinny on his SR year highlights. So not sure what some people are talking about in that regard.

I'm guessing the post regarding his hands and dropping 50% of his passes may have had a word or two left out such as "if". We obviously can't tell much of anything about his hands from a highlight video and I doubt anybody on here was watching his games in person. Some catches may have been with the body a bit. He probably needs some work here i'm sure.

Our WR recruits are always a crap shoot. But Cahoon is coming in with decent size and great speed with fairly solid production. So that is a decent start. I'm sure he needs quite a bit of help with his route running but that is fairly common though. Not sure on how quick he is in short distance but probably pretty goodt considering his great 200 time and a PR 50m of 10.5 seconds. His change of direction and shiftiness may not be top notch though just watching his highlights.

Will he work out? Who knows? But certainly not the worst flier we have taken at WR.

Just hope he isn't the next Rocky Thompson lol!
