Class of 2014 WR Jamal Custis (PA) Offered

somehow I doubt his status as a walk on basketball player is going to affect the football team's plans for him.

He has mentioned multiple times during this process about how he wants to play both sports. Even had offers to play both. Doesn't sound like someone looking to add weight. Also knowing this about him I doubt the staff is looking at him to add weight to play tight end. Seems like he will be our big WR target and a huge red zone fad target for us.

And who knows what happens when/if he adds the weight. Maybe he can't carry more weight and keep his athleticism.

Here's the WR's on the roster:

Christopher Clark Sr.
Adrian Flemming Sr.
Quinta Funderburk Jr.
Jeremiah Kobena Jr.
Macauley Hill Jr.
Franklin Santos Jr.
Jarrod West Jr.
Keenan Hale So.
Alvin Cornelius RF
Ben Lewis RF
Corey Winfield Fr.
Brisly Estime Fr.
Sean Avant Fr.

I will take a crack at this:

Christopher Clark Sr. - graduating
Adrian Flemming Sr. - may try for another year, but perhaps the staff doesn't want that
Quinta Funderburk Jr. - couldn't possibly transfer again, right? Will be here?
Jeremiah Kobena Jr. - could he graduate this year and move on? If not, still here.
Macauley Hill Jr. - Who? Is he on scholarship? If so, I can't imagine him being back next year.
Franklin Santos Jr. - see Macauley Hill.
Jarrod West Jr. - he, of course, will be back
Keenan Hale So. - he is only a sophomore? Does he project at any other position?
Alvin Cornelius RF - I think he will be here, important downstate connections.
Ben Lewis RF - could he be converted to d-back? Is there room in the secondary?
Corey Winfield Fr. - new regime, part of the high flying passing attack.
Brisly Estime Fr. - new regime, part of the high flying passing attack.
Sean Avant Fr. - new regime, part of the high flying passing attack.

I thought Funderburk is a SO eligibility-wise. He sat out his FR year at Ark and last year as a transfer. I thought he still had 3 years (including this year).

I believe this is correct, I think he is a Soph eligibility wise. The numbers as always will work themselves out. Flemming may decide to move on after yet another injury and I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Lewis or Hale decided to transfer to get immediate PT someplace else.

He's going to be a hybrid WR/TE. We aren't going to make him 290, all we need him to do is gain a few pounds of muscle. He's not going to be a traditional TE. He's also not going to be a traditional WR.

Also if anything he's going to be a walkon for basketball. He won't be a real player for a perennial top 10 school. I think he knows this.

All Eligibility is projected to NEXT year when Custis and the others are true freshman. We’re bringing in 4 this year (Williams, Custis – and hopefully both Cooper and Ishmael). The numbers are fine because we’ll have to replace 5 players over 2 seasons.

West – senior
Kobena - senior

Broyld - junior
Funderburk – junior
Hale – junior

Lewis – sophomore
Estime – sophomore
Cornelius – sophomore

Winfield – redshirt freshman
Avant – redshirt freshman

INCOMING (projected)
Williams – true freshman
Cooper – true freshman
Custis – true freshman
Ishmael – true freshman

Clark – gone
Flemming - gone

The others are walkons.

I think Ben Lewis could move to safety.

I'd suspect Custis will be slotted to takeover for Broyld down the road.

Hale torn an ACL in August.
He's done for the year, as is Donnie Simmons.

Play football and travel, practice with a top 10 school. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Don't forget Erv Phillips was recruited as an H-Back

I'm not a supporter of position switches orv"conversions e.g. turning a WR to a TE. Custis gvs the position of WR size and speed we currently can't even approach. We have TE rated at 4stars in Thompson and convert him to DE. Sorry, I disagree with these Robnsonian desperation type moves.

Hogue seemed to work out. I trust the staff.

Not sure why we jump to assume Ben Lewis has to move positions when he's getting time at WR this year.

Guess you disagree with Kevin Johnson to WR, who went on to the NFL as a WR, Tebucky Jones to DB who went on to the NFL as a DB, Doug Houge to LB who went on to the NFL as a LB, Diamond Ferri to DB, Derrell Smith to LB, etc etc. Players sometimes change positions because it makes sense, not because it's desperate.

I don't assume he'll move, but i believe that he can move. He was a very good db in high school.

Aren't you the guy who has been advocating making Reddish a WR for a while now? Check this out:

"If we can provide Zack with some quality WR teammates this kid is going to be a heisman hopeful for the Orangemen. I think that finding another CB and returning Brandon Reddish to offense is a solution that hasn't been considered." --CaliCuse, October 20, 2012

I also think he wanted Merkerson switched to whatever position he wasn't playing at the time

Ben Lewis is not a D1 defensive back. He has the potential to be a D1 WR. He is starting to get some run.

He could be a d1 safety I have no doubt about that.

I am happy to eat crow on this one, but I'm telling you he lacks the speed to ever be a safety in this D.

I've noticed they usually have him in there when we run bubble screens, or something where the WR is required to do some blocking. He definitely seems like a good blocking WR, but if I am picking up on it, i am sure the opposing teams are as well. Time to give him a few targets to keep them honest.
