Class of 2026 WR Nau'jour “Toosii” Grainger

Thia is fair, but did we have nearly this much controversy over Noah Lobdell, who is taking away a spot on a team with significantly less roster spots.
Noah was grandfathered in under the house settlement since he was a walkon already on the roster. Autry could have added an additional walkon but chose not to.

that was Lycoming College and the guy was 58.
Sorry mr farnsworth.gif

I'm assuming he may be able to help with NIL either through his contacts or his own funds. I am not assuming that he has NIL funds though, but he has to know people who do.
It was Toosii or Private Equity.

Fran Brown handing out a scholarship to Toosii is nothing but a gimmick, and it’s the kind of move that makes Syracuse football look unserious. Especially coming off a blowout loss to a 1-10 team using their backup QB. Sure Toosii being from Syracuse is a cute story. Hometown kid, big name, playing for the local team. But this isn’t a feel good movie, this is major big boy Power Four football. This guy is 5'8", 165 pounds, hasn’t played organized football in years and his only other offer came from Sacramento State, an FCS program. That’s not ACC‑caliber talent.

Scholarships aren’t souvenirs, they’re lifelines for kids who grind every day in the weight room and on the field. Giving one to a 25‑year‑old rapper chasing a side hustle is a slap in the face to every recruit who’s been putting in the work. And let’s be real: Toosii has platinum records, millions of followers, and a tour schedule. Do we honestly think he’s going to commit to winter workouts, spring ball and film study like a freshman walk on? The cameras will follow him, not the team, and that’s a distraction this program cannot afford.

Worse, it sets a terrible precedent. If hype matters more than hard work, what’s next, Drake suiting up at wide receiver? LL Cool J at linebacker? The locker room dynamic will implode when guys see a celebrity parachute in and get the same scholarship they fought for. Fran is supposed to be rebuilding Syracuse football, not turning it into a publicity circus. If he wants Toosii around, fine, book him for halftime. But don’t waste a scholarship slot on a sideshow.
I’m gonna call you Shakespeare with this rant you just went on. We chose to use 85 scholarships instead of 105. Even if he is taking a scholarship up if the coaches feel a player is a must have then there not gonna be scared to go past 85 if they have too. Today alone he’s gained the school publicity which I don’t know if you noticed but this past season all we have gotten is bad publicity with this atrocious season.

Still not sure this is real. Seems like he's shorter than Antwan Cordy.

If I was 25 I wouldn't necessarily be afraid of football practice, I would be afraid of actually having to go to class. If this gentleman I never heard of until yesterday is as successful as he's supposed to be, does he really want to go to freshman psychology lectures? Maybe Fran will give him a free pass on DART.

Publicity? Let’s pump the brakes. What kind of publicity are we really talking about here and who’s it actually reaching? Toosii’s target audience is music fans. Teenagers and twenty somethings streaming his songs, not people buying season tickets or caring about ACC football. Sure he’s got millions of followers but how many of them are suddenly tuning into Syracuse vs. Wake Forest because he’s on the roster? That’s not football publicity, that’s music publicity.
You just said teenagers what do most teenagers like? Sports. I know 15 girls who reposted toosi to Syracuse and said how they can’t wait to go to the game alone.

Ok maybe I was too hard on Toosi getting a scholarship. He’s a hometown kid and Syracuse football desperately needs a feel good story after all the bad headlines. I won’t overlook the hunger. He doesn’t need football but choosing to grind at this level shows passion. Worst case it’s a one‑year buzz. Best case, he contributes and becomes a symbol of the turnaround. He's the same size and Landel Bembo and Bembo got some PT.
I don’t expect him to be a guy who’s gonna significantly contribute but he’s got more knowledge about real life stuff than some of these coaches. He can teach these kids how to handle there money and so forth.

Two things:
(1) Never heard of him before yesterday.
(2) I see little to no downside here. He brings eyeballs to the program, and as the old saying goes: "There's no such thing as bad publicity". If he can play, then you play him. If he's just a PR ornament then you use him for that as well.
This isn't brain surgery- it's sports, plain and simple. Not that serious. JMHO

105 player cap. Some players can get partial scholarships, supplemented by House settlement money.

UNC is fully funding all 105. I think Wildhack wants to hold the line at 85, split 105 ways. We'll see.

You want to be competitive, you can't hold back money like Steinbrenner anymore.
I hope we are not staying at 85 when others are going to 105

And as long as he is in school admissions will be up for students to get into Syracuse.

We are going to use roster slots 101 to 105 very wisely. They are for sale. Anyone with $100M to donate to NIL can be backup punter.

My favorite time in life was going back to school at the ripe age of 26. I’d had a taste of what real life was like, working and paying the bills, and appreciated academics so much more. Who knows what Toosii thinks of that side of things but school is basically a vacation from the real world, who wouldn’t want that as an adult?

What I like about this is it helps make the sport relevant to a lot of young people who otherwise wouldn’t care. College football is seriously declining in popularity among younger audiences. How are you going to win back their interest?

Who knows if THIS is the way to do it but Fran’s just done more to try and make that happen than anyone else I can think of (excluding, of course, Mini KISS).

I really don't understand the people who have a major problem with this. I could go through a list of 15-20 scholarship players that did exactly nothing this year and most would have forgotten they were even on the team. This is a Syracuse native with a huge music career/following that obviously opens doors revenue-wise for us. It's not like we are coming in promising him a starting spot. He likely will never touch the field, but could be a really cool story and a way to generate publicity for the Syracuse brand. Im just not sure why people can manufacture anger when this guy is one of 85. I dont see a lot of downside.
