WR

I'm not convinced that the rotation needs to be tightened. They might play a lot of guys. And if the routes have been simplified to be specific instead of reads, that removes one of the things that probably prevented guys from getting on the field.

I’ll just say this… rotation aside, is anyone really concerned if we dip 5 or 6 deep at WR?

I’ve seen enough potential for the time being to be comfortable getting Jackson, Alford, Gadsen, Hatcher, Cooper, Jones and Queeley targets. Wouldn’t be surprised if Brown slid into games either.

It looks like Jackson’s gonna work the middle, Queeley more of a possession, Cooper some slot work and the other guys more deep threats on the outside.

I don’t mind the stable one bit. That’ll change as the season goes on and we’ll find the guys we’re going to lean on. But looks like we’ve got some potential for sure.

Wasn’t it nice seeing a guy run one down deep and not see the ball sail 10 yards over their head?

Even if we short the throw, I feel pretty good about 6’3+ guys going up and getting it.

And someone said Mahar told them they are throwing to the TE in practice. So it looks like Shrader will have lots of options.

Me neither. Depth matters, dependability matters, and size / speed matter, too.

Queeley and Cooper are solid, steady performers. Jackson is now a veteran who's played a ton. Alford is a matchup problem, and Hatcher / Gadsen are big targets [albeit unproven] as well.

Pena has potential. And Jones looks a lot like a young Kevin Johnson. And Brown made some nice plays Friday, for a kid who just showed up on campus.

The WR corps was an area of inexperience and relative weakness last year, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

Good points and dont forget Pena. I think he fits that football player mode. He can get runs and passes coming out of the back field. Im still wondering what will CJ Hayes provide in his one year of eligibility.

It’s crazy - we’ve got a lot of people we can feed.

After watching the spring game, I am more intrigued and mystified by this position group than ever. I don’t know what to think regarding who the big targets will be, other than Courtney. I was happy to see receivers getting separation consistently and I don’t remember ever seeing a whole spring game with no drops.

Either our WRs are getting better or our DBs are not good. It should be noted, all of the long TDs were made against freshman defensive backs playing in their first public college game. It won’t be so easy playing against experienced ACC cornerbacks. Can these guys get open against those type players? Can our OL hold off the rush so our QBs have time for these plays to develop? Can our QBs make the throws?

I will say, the coaches have to be thrilled a bunch of long passes for touchdowns were caught on film. It’s almost like it was designed that way, to try and scare ACC defensive coordinators, and discourage them from using that press coverage that has been so effective against us for so many years.

To me, by far the biggest key for success in the coming season lies with our ability to make big passing plays with our wide receivers. Just a few each game that’s all we need.

if we can get that to happen, press coverage goes away and our offense opens up completely.

Good points, Tom - all of them. Especially agree with the points in the 2 paragraphs above. I am cautiously optimistic about the WRs, but... I still need to see them perform against ACC level DBs and press coverage to believe we have enough talent.

As you said, the OL also has to give enough time, the QB has to make the throw, and the WRs have to make the reads, gain separation AND make the catch. None of that happened last season with enough frequency.

I'm confident the new scheme, formations, personnel use, play calling, and COACHING will have a huge impact. Now, the players have to execute. The degree to which that is the case (in the passing game) will determine the success of the season.

I'll throw this in this thread since the Taj Harris transfer thread is locked. I see that he is listed on the Rutgers site as being 185 lbs. Figures that he finally gained weight now. Although who knows how accurate that is. If legit he has gained 13 lbs, but also shrunk an inch and is 6'-1". That kind of strength gain would do him very well. I'm kind of optimistic with what we should have at WR this year but would really have liked to see what Taj could do in this new offense as I think he would kill it with the new passing schemes we have. Hindsight is 20/20 but I think he made a big mistake. Plus now he is stuck at Butgers.

Gained 13 lbs?

Been spending a lotta time at the grease trucks, huh?

I'm totally fine moving on from him. We'll pass better without the QB's worried about his tantrums.

With all due respect to Taj, good to move on from a guy with a #1 attitude, with a #3 skill set.

He’s just another guy.
I am not concerned about losing Taj either. I saw an immature young man who thought he was far better than he actually was.

I wish him good luck at RU. Hope he has a good season there and finally puts it together. Maybe playing closer to home will help him.

Very interested to see how he does. I believe RU has that kid from Nebraska who can run but can't throw back for another season. And that true frosh they played a lot in their 'bowl game'. He had the worst arm strength I have seen from a P5 QB in a very long time.

Their awful OL has been replaced by a bunch of transfers. We can see if the problem was the old players, the coaches or the scheme.

Taj might have a hard time getting many touches.

If Nassib (DM guy) was the last QB that could hit receivers on deep balls that says more about Dino's system then the QB's. We have all seen the poor route running by WR's and the pathetic pass blocking. I know DB stated that the new offensive scheme was going to be a combination of both, however I would be happy if they totally scrapped ALL of DB's system.
know this is old - but - bruh.

Average Yds per catch:
AET > Lemon
Sean Riley > Lemon
Custis > Lemon
T Jackson > Lemon

I'd love to see a post spring depth chart right now, particularly in regards to the WR's. From the spring game commentary of Anae during his interview, he mentioned Copper, Jackson and even Penae as returners who have done well. But he then specifically mentioned Isaac Jones as of right now holding the "record for spring" and said he has done a really good job. Whatever the "record for spring" means i'm not sure, but his tone seemed to indicate he was the best of the bunch during spring.

If one exists, I bet it is so chock full of 'or's that is would not be useful.

Either there hasn't been much separation or the coaches are playing the fanbase like Charlie Daniels plays the fiddle.

Your love for Dino is stronger than ever. So nice for you two.

Schiano's offense is always trash.

I don't care how they do it but Pena needs the ball in his hands more. Way more.

Agreed. I also like Cooper in the slot kid has quicks and can make people miss

Not sure he is strong enough and tough enough to be the primary receiver but if you rate the WRs on most YAC, I think he is going to be first or second consistently.

I bet he gets the ball on at least 8 reverses in 2022. I expect him to be the target of a bunch of screens. Plays designed to get him the ball with a little daylight.

Jackson and Coop (and maybe Hayes) are going to be the guys to make the tough catches in traffic in the middle of the field. Hopefully a TE too. Maher? Transfer TBD?

I think Queeley will be a guy we throw to on 3rd down, mostly along the sideline.

We don't think about blocking ability when we do these rundowns but it is an important part of the WR position, especially at Syracuse, with Sean Tucker at RB and Garrett Shrader at QB.

Queeley looked like our best blocking WR last year. Guys like Hayes and Cooper might play more than you would think if they prove to be reliable blockers.

Jones looks like he might be a red zone specialist.

Thinking Brown and Alford will probably be our best shot at deep threats but I can't discount Hatcher or Gasdsen. Long and Williams have also looked good in spring practice and had good things said about them.

Courtney Jackson is a guy I think could really thrive if the outside guys improve. I thought he was our best WR at the end of year, he is shifty, and could fill the Erv Phillips role.
Agree. Coop is the tough catch across the middle type. Not much wiggle but he's strong, has good body control and reliable hands.
