Yes or no our next HC is on the bench now

Is our next HC a current SU assistant?

Not a cop out. I have no idea. I think it depends on how this thing finishes up. And that is to be decided. Our A.D. may have two dumpster fires to put out.
I didn’t read entire thread but genuinely curious your thoughts on our current situation as I respect your opinion and know you’ll give an honest assessment (as a historical “pro” JB guy... you know what I mean).

I am 20 now. I only started following SU around 12-13 years old
So in 2012? I’ve been in your shoes.. I joined the board at 18, my freshman year at su, and have been here since then. 29 now. Where you are is *similar* (NOT equivalent) to what people posted about Syracuse football when I told me age... meaning I missed so much of the good ole days.

You were young(ish), but two of Syracuse’s greatest teams ever were when I was in school. 2009-2010 and 2011-2012. Some tough luck were reasons we didn’t win a championship but make no mistake about it, those two teams healthy would absolutely ruin the teams we have fielded the last 7 seasons.

It will be Mike Hopkins. Even the people on the bench think so. Ask them... I have and that’s the answer I’ve gotten repeatedly
It would take a 8 year 40M plus deal.

We are all fans but the Groundhog Day of the last 5 years is hurting the brand of the program.
I fear JB’s successor is GMac.
I think that would polarize and charge up the fanbase even more.

I have been following Syracuse sports for 45 years. It isn't as much fun anymore. The league switch. Our teams not being as good as we hoped. For years, I would say each week that I am going to the casino to play poker on Saturday and week after week, I stay home and watch the football team. I can't speak for others, but this week, i am playing poker. Might miss Friday nights hoop game as well. 45 years.

I agree. The league switch has had a big effect on our program, and I do not think it has been for the better. It is simply not as fun to watch, as you said. Something about being the big dog (or 1 of 2 or 3) in the awesome Big East compared to top half (at best?) in a conference that you do not care anything about.

Hop will get a phone call. Depending on how his Dad is, he may or may not want to leave the West Coast.

Red will get an interview.

After that, they'll see who's available.

It won't be Tony Bennett and it won't be Jay Wright.

If you want a HC with experience, he'll have to come from a lower P5 school or a Mid-Major.

If you want an up and coming assistant, they'll be plenty to choose from, including Red.

Honestly it is in JB's best interest to let go of this entire staff. None of them deserve to be retained. If I am Wildhack I make that point to JB. What is JB going to do, retire in protest?

IMO JB needs the following:

An associate HC who can take much of the day to day work off of JB's hands. So this person should know what they are doing (experience) and have the ability to offer a different opinion than JB's. The best fits would be someone who has worked with JB. Guys like O'Toole (best choice IMO), Orr, Welsh, Murphy (if fired), Pitino.

A stud recruiter or a current HS/AAU HC who has a stud underclassman that they can bring along. This won't impact the 2021 season but will make a big difference in the 2022 season which should be JB's last. It also will help leave talent for the next HC.

A young energetic rah rah guy who can teach fundamentals and be the good cop. You need this to off set JB.

“An associate HC who can take much of the day to day work off of JB's hands.” The role Hopkins played and is not here.

Oof tough question. I think Wildhack will have to exert his power here. Anything but a national search is unacceptable. My fear is that it’s “gifted” mid season or at a point where his hands are tied and he has to give someone an audition.

Then, he’ll have to do the search after an SU guy has had an audition. JW needs to command the process. That will be hard to do.

Will Hop come back? Not sure. If the trajectories of each program continue, I think there will be immense pressure to get Hop back at all cost. But boosters and former players will have to be part of that process.

There’s a lot of moving parts here.

I think there has been a combination of events that have all hurt us. The probation hurt us more than some like to admit. The limit on 'ships was the biggest sanction. Also, the limit on the number of coaches being on the road at the same time. Second, the switch to the ACC. Now, we had to do it. But we went from being a big dog to a bit smaller dog. And the last is JB. As he gets older, the worse it is going to be for us. Other schools can rightly express to recruits the likely hood that JB won't be there for your entire 4 years. Another coach comes in and there will be a question of whether your style of play fits the new coach. It was very important that we land numbers in these past two classes. And I think we landed quality as well. Jb built this program. But the school would have been better off if he left after the last final four.

Then don’t watch lol. You all sound like Martyrs out here.
I still support them. I’m going to the GT/Cuse game in Atlanta next weekend. It’s just getting tougher to care...

Just like the football coach gets the benefit of lowered expectations and geographic disadvantages, our basketball coach/program has raised the bar and does benefit from geographic advantages.

There is zero reason for us to be this mediocre, all the time now. The recent Final Fours were enough to make many of us forgive the pathetic regular seasons, but now we’re putting teams out there that barely look capable of making the First Four.

Enough is enough... but we’re resigned to a couple more years of a revered HC holding the program hostage. He’ll be loved when he’s gone, but right now, this is really tough to watch. Made even tougher by Hop’s success in UW.

I hope not (but in a negative mood today and not only on this team... )

Things change.

As our program continues to regress the less attractive it may become... especially if Hopkins starts to have success at Washington.

I give Hopkins as next coach less than 25%.

Maybe it becomes more attractive because now he doesn’t have to try to maintain a near impossible standard, but instead gets the chance to turn it around and restore the program to its former glory? The effects of his leaving are very clear...and then he gets to be the guy to clean it up.
