Things change.

As our program continues to regress the less attractive it may become... especially if Hopkins starts to have success at Washington.

It takes one year to turn around a basketball team with a good recruiting class. Hopkins took Washington from 8 to 22 wins. Roy turned around UNC in one year as well after Doherty bottomed them out.

Maybe it becomes more attractive because now he doesn’t have to try to maintain a near impossible standard, but instead gets the chance to turn it around and restore the program to its former glory? The effects of his leaving are very clear...and then he gets to be the guy to clean it up.

That's possible.. there is a reason I kept it less than 25%, instead of less than 5%.

That's dependant on many factors.

This is the saving grace. You don’t have to “build” a program in Basketball.

With our programs stature, even being down lately, one good HC hire that brings with him a good recruiting class, and we can be a 25+ win team with Championship aspirations again. Then that snowballs into future recruiting classes.

Unfortunately, we have to wait out our current coach and hope he leaves some solid role players and maybe a returning stud behind.

That's dependant on many factors.
We have the facilities, revenue and exposure. It’s not like we’re hoping for a miracle. We just need Boeheim to leave behind a non-dumpster fire roster and have Wildhack nail the next hire.

Imagine if we brought Hop back this year, and he brought Stewart and McDaniels with him? That how quickly it can change.

It will be Mike Hopkins. Even the people on the bench think so. Ask them... I have and that’s the answer I’ve gotten repeatedly

Say Hop tears it up at UW, he wins the league every year, he reloads year in and year out, he puts up a great record, he gets a top 4 seed pretty much every year and UW is annually mentioned as a FF contender. That sounds a whole lot like Few at Gonzaga and he's not going anywhere. Sentiment only goes just so far and if Hop's got a great gig going and he's making good money in a program he built from scratch, that's pretty much just like his mentor did when he was Hop's age. And Seattle's a cool place to live. If he leaves UW for SU, those heart strings tugging on him will have to be strung pretty tight. Going back in time to go forward in life or in your career hardly ever works.

Hop will never Gonzaga the Pac-12.
Arizona and UCLA have too much to be down forever.

Hop is going to be our Roy Williams.
Roy was dominant at Kansas. He went to Final Fours and was the big dog.
He turned down UNC when Bill Guthridge retires.
He eventually came home when UNC went godfather on him.

I don’t know if Syracuse will go godfather on him but we should atleast think about it if he continues his trajectory out there.

Arizona hoops will rule that conference though.

Agree. I think they'll back up the Brinks truck to get him back home to Syracuse. There will be huge pressure from the boosters and fan base to make it happen, since it was the plan and expectation all along.

We are talking about 3 more years, not ten. Good luck getting high seeds in that conference.

Don’t know why so few of you realize the situation with Mike’s Dad.
It’s a big factor for him staying out west.

I’m sorry if you feel that way. I’ve only been watching for about 7 years now since that’s about the age I was aware about sports. Is the team great. No. Can it be good? I think so
I think they can be good as well. After watching this football team, I need a short break. Winning a poker tournament or two, wouldn't hurt either.

So all those stories about how happy he is now are untrue? SU is not going to pay him the kind of money it would take to get him to leave Washington. Not happening.

Money and a buyout. I agree he isnt leaving. Just a few points.

He's loyal to a fault, I cant see him walking away from kids he recruited.

He loves the AD and the feeling is mutual.

He gave his life to SU, no different than JB and many turned his back on him after his 9 games.

He signed 2 top 10 guys in one season, his second season. Syracuse has never ever done that.

Recruiting area is better.

With his success and his importance to his program's success I don't see Washington letting him go and they'll match and probably beat any offer Syracuse gives.

People mention his wife and her wanting to go home, why did they leave in the first place when he could've just had his dream job in another year or two.

He is a college basketball coach. I don't know what she does but im assuming she understands his need to travel and relocate.

There is one program trending down and one up.

Of course he’s happy but when your entire life and career is made at SU, when that opportunity comes, he’s coming back in my opinion and from what I have heard... his dads health is unfortunately getting worse which is why it was important to take this job for the time being. His wife wants to ultimately be back here. UW will always be a notch below SU because of the stature of the program regardless of what he can accomplish. If Barbers got paid, you better believe SU is going to pay Hopkins.

What people also don’t realize is Boeheim and Hop are still very very close and talk all the time. People think theres bad blood there. There isn’t at all. This is the biggest misconception around... JB is going to lobby to get hop back. Trust me

Wow. Has an amazing job and having unreal success at it while being with a sick father but you're making it sound like his wife is extremely selfish and sets the rules of his career.

Ive never gotten that impression from her and everything I've seen is that they're treated like royalty by Washington.

Washington doesn’t have the potential Syracuse does.
Washington will never care about hoops like Syracuse does.
They can sign the top recruits.
That fanbase cares about beating Oregon in football.

Who said anything about her being selfish and setting the rules of his career ? That’s a ridiculous take and not even close to what I said. Home is home and Syracuse has always been there home and it will play a factor. Happy wife happy life and they are a great team together and do what’s best for the both of them together as a family. This is bigger than basketball

There must be insane negative recruiting going on against JB and his age. But as the oldest head coach ever in D1, that’s not changing unfortunately. It’s not fair, but the perception is clearly hurting recruiting.

Why isnt a hall of fame coach able to get the full potential out of this program?

Washington will always be a football school but what I saw after attending a game last year vs UCLA there is a ton of support, a rabid fan base, and students who care about hoops. This isnt a team that plays in an empty arena. The momentum Hops program has isnt stopping any time soon.

He keeps on this track and the AD who absolutely adores Hop is going to do everything to keep him. You think a mil or two a year is going to matter to them if it means a successful basketball program and a garbage one they had before under Romar?
