Yikes

I don’t deny he’s streaky. How many of those 40% shooters have low volume (less than 5 or so attempts) and/or play for midmajors?

Buddy on a midmajor is a 40% shooter and nobody would be able to change my mind about that.

Anyway, it’s semantic. If he’s not elite, he’s still very good.

But Syracuse isn't a mid-major...

But Syracuse isn't a mid-major...

Alsacs noted the number of 40% shooters in the NCAA, I noted that most of those are guys playing against programs half a step up from D3. That’s all.

Buddy has been a very good shooter on a high major. He’d be a better shooter on a midmajor, comparable to a lot of those 50 or so players hitting 40%. Syracuse doesn’t need to be a midmajor for him to be a very good shooter.

What was the point you thought I was making?

Buddy is shooting 28% from 3 that is really poor.

In this season, which has been stopped and started twice, with Buddy missing time due to Covid.

Do we discount the prior two seasons or his career percentage? We should go with this season’s percentage alone because.... it’s more recent?

Well, which one do you think better predicts his shooting percentage this season? And how he'll shoot in the next game?

This reminds of that time classy Calhoun said something similar about Trevor Cooney. He was calling one of our games for ESPN and said that Cooney plays like a guy who will dominate a future YMCA adult league. Something along those lines. anyone else remember that?
You sure that wasn't about Tyler Cooney?

Well at this point his shots attempted per game is exceeding his points per game. That's a truly remarkable achievement. I went back 20 years and the only starter that was close was Freshman Kaleb Joseph who avg 5.9pts on 5.8 FGA. Excellent company but thankfully Buddy is an excellent defender and does a lot of the little things that win basketball games...oh wait.

What is crazy to me is Buddy is struggling to shoot, and we actually have a depth piece on the bench that can play in Kadary Richmond and Buddy’s minutes from last year have gone UP.
He is worse this year from last year and has gone from 35.6 MPG to 36.1 MPG.

I mean what does JB see that nobody else does.
Stuff like this is why I lose it for the future. Buddy has 2 more years of eligibility left.
JB isn’t recruiting guards.

What is he doing?

I haven’t argued in favor of Buddy playing 40 minutes and shooting 20 times per game.

His career percentage. Always pick the larger sample size.
Oh, bad move to dig in here, when you previously acknowledged the variable of Covid's effects on Buddy and the season.

The crazy thing to think about that if HoWash/Carey/Goodine were our only options off the bench this year.. I bet Buddy would be getting even more minutes

JB see Buddy's mom in the house everynight.....nuff said.

Buddy has seen his best days - he is severely limited - like the guy said - he is a all world - at the YMCA - every coaching report reads to stay in his grill - he's slow and cannot run off screens to get open - his numbers are down because he is forced to shoot bad shots - he's still pretty good and we can win with him - but we can't win with Girard and him - that I know

He was forced into bad shots last year and made them. There’s nuance to this. Should he shoot 16 times a game and play 40 minutes? No. Should he be a bench guy who plays 20 minutes and puts up 5 or 6 shots? No.

The YMCA comment was about playing style, not ability.

It does. You pointed out that there are unusual circumstances affecting things right now. But then dismissing those circumstances to fall back to the career average.

It's inconsistent.

The argument is his ability as a shooter. The Covid stops and starts haven’t made him forget how to shoot. His skill hasn’t been affected. His percentage is down, the way talented home run hitters tend to slump after the all-star break.

His career percentage is still the better indicator of his ability. He’s more likely to perform at his career percentage than his season percentage to this point.

But the questions you responded to weren't about him as a shooter. They were about which percentages were more predictive of how we would perform this season/in the next game.

Right. And I’m saying the best predictor of that is his skill as a shooter, which is best evidenced by his career shooting percentage.

I feel like we’re going in circles.

So how do you explain why his percentages so low this season?

Scouting report says don’t let him catch and shoot.
Face guard him.
He is drawing more attention.

Which is why it is ridiculous our 4th best player is the primary feature of our offense.

I swear I could write a scouting report on our team that opponents would use. It’s not hard.

If we were a top 10ish team then yes that is what he should probably be.

Instead BUDDY BOEHEIM literally leads the ACC in field goal attempts per game and exactly ZERO of the top 30 scorers in the league have a worse FG%.

ZEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. That seems like a problematic combination of statistics, but hey JB has forgot more than I'll ever know.
