You never know who you are going to meet in the Mountains

JG3 had some interesting numbers shooting this season.

88.2% from the FT line
40.3% from the 3 point circle
and
37.6% from shot attempts inside the 3 point circle.

That is one area he really needs to improve. His struggles shooting mid range jumpers, runners in the lane, even layups really hurt his efficiency on offense. If he can keep his 3 point shooting percentage above 40% and get his non three point shooting percentage even to around 45%, he will be a lot more effective and valuable.

He really needs a legit floater. Or something like what Symir uses ( obviously Symir needs a lot more of what Joe does shooting wise). I am surprised he hasn't developed it yet because he has shown he can get into that part of the paint but then he either tries going to the rim or finding a wrap around pass. Gerry made a small living with that, especially when pushing the tempo.

None of us really know probably but my guess is going to be yes. I say that because K and Scheyer had an in home with him and had dinner with the family. Is that typical for someone you haven’t offered?
They said that he did.

And Gerry was more athletic than Joe. He was quicker with a better handle. I think he jumped higher too. Hopkins said he first caught his eye when he dunked with two hands at a camp in high school.

How many 6-1 2 guards are there in the P 5?
Auburn and Illinois both played a majority of minutes with someone 6’1 or shorter at the 2 this season, per Kenpom.

Yeah- i saw Gerry play since he was a freshman as I'm from the area and was in the same class and same district for hoops.

Gerry was faster and more athletic. That said having a floater doesn't require you to be a plus athlete. It's much the opposite in fact. Joe doesn't have great footwork on the move to shoot off the dribble which is a big part of it and what he needs to work on.

How well Joe scores next year will be impacted by whether or not Cole stays.

Just like Gerry

.385 from inside the arc his senior yr

I feel like no matter what we need a ringer at guard out of the portal. Need vs what we get is another matter.

A lot depends on Symir, in my opinion. Is the player we saw the last few games the one we can expect these next two years? Can he produce at that level consistently -- i.e., a guy who approaches double figures scoring and somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 apg? Because I think that the defense and ball handling are upgrades over what we saw most of the year with Joe running the point.

If Symir is ready for prime time, then I think we're better positioned at guard than some might believe. Unlike this year, we'll also have two backups for depth purposes, in Quadir and Taylor.

Now, if we can land Mintz, by all means. Looks like we may have missed our window, though.

Of course that question can’t be easily answered. But NCAA.org lists the typical high D1 shooting guard at 6’3”. So obviously there are plenty that are both bigger and smaller.

And I think way too much is made out of an inch or two on the perimeter. If a guy can shoot and help handle the ball he can play the position. Given that we play zone, it’s not as though when we are playing someone with a bigger 2 they can iso down low and take advantage of the height difference.

Men’s basketball shooting guard recruiting guidelines

Top D1 / Top JC

  • Height: 6’3”+
  • Club Experience: Plays at the highest level in AAU, qualifying for national tournaments and elite events across the country. Ranks nationally on lists such as Rivals, Scout and ESPN Top 150. High profile player who is usually recruited through AAU as an underclassman.
  • High School Experience: Varsity starter all four years of high school. Earned several top accolades, such as All-State, All-Region and All-Area honors. Best player on the team.
Low D1 / Top D2 / Top NAIA

  • Height: 6’2”+
  • Club Experience: Three to four years of AAU experience, playing on high level teams that compete nationally. Gets college coach exposure at club summer tournaments.
  • High School Experience: Three to four years as a varsity starter, earning awards such as All-Conference and All-Region. One of the top athletes on the team.
I imagine that there are a lot of smaller 2 guards at the lower than p-5 level. I think that the average size at a Mac school or even a Atlantic 10 school is smaller than the average in the ACC or Big 10. I haven't researched it but that would be my guess.

Which makes sense.

Doesn't mean those guys can't play, just that they usually have something [to your example - size] that relegates them to that level.

And of course, there are exceptions.

There are outliers all the time. Percentages tell the real story though, and the percentages say that 6’1” sg in the power 5 are not that prevalent/successful.

I think who returns plays a big role here. Can Symir be the kind of guard that is extremely difficult to keep out of the lane no matter what ? Does Cole leaving change everything for Symir with teams having only Joe to worry about from outside and thus expose him as being less effective than we thought?

3P% can also be related to how much defenses pay attention to you. We've seen numerous examples of complimentary players who benefit from clean looks earlier in their careers, who struggle more when they become the focal point of what defenses want to take away later on.

THIS 144%.

CJ Fair and RoboTriche nod their heads, knowingly.

Triche shot 40% from 3 as a Frosh, as he was often the 4th or 5th option.
33, 35, 29 his last 3 years of higher usage.

CJ hit 47% from 3 as a Junior (on about 2 shots/game) paired with Southerland, which fell to 28% as a Sr as The Man.

CJ's junior year was about as perfect as possible. What a weapon he was, cast in that third role in the offense role. He had the perfect skill set to be as efficient as possible. I was actually surprised when he missed shots that year.

I happen to agree with you and some folks suggested this before the season even started!!
Same, except I think Buddy should have been in a 3 guard rotation and 3 forward rotation. I think the team would have been quite good in that configuration.

Joe might get killed playing a man to man defense. I think he chose wisely.
Well, there is always the lazy shooter at the playground who yells "switch" all game long every time his man blows by him.

By the way Girard's JR Season

FG 142 - 372 .392
3PT 89 - 221 .403
FT 82 - 93 .882 ==>matched his freshmen season
RB-Asst-Stls- Pts 92 138 53 455
13.8 pts/game

These are better stats than Cooneys Sr. season. Now, these are Stats. On defence, Cooney has a distinct edge.
BTW, has anyone else noticed the only time Joe misses FTs is when the announcers comment how great he is at shooting FTs?

Here is my post from last year around this same time……oh what could have been!

It sure seems like boeheim wants more bad shots from his top guy than other coaches

I coached a team of ten year olds this year when the real coach couldn't do it anymore. I banned switching. Told them, yeah switching would be good but you all use it as an excuse to never move your feet so we aren't gonna switch

I am retired now, thankfully
