2017 Fanfest Sat Aug 12 Moved Indoors

I don't think it's paranoia. I think they just want to get to work without distractions. I think most football coaches see the Spring game and "fan fest" type events as distractions.

I mean we can say "We as fans pay your salary and we expect x, y and z" - but in the end the coach knows that he's fired or re-upped on the basis of his w/l record. If I thought the extra practice with no distraction would help the program more than satiating a few fans? I'd do it too.

In all honesty, it's a choice the bigger schools can't make due to tradition and booster support. Maybe it's a net plus?

The spring game and fan fest to me mean almost nothing in terms of actual football. I used to think they did during the Gerg years. I was so hungry for any amount of positive news that I would attend these things like a Southern Baptist going to Sunday school. The only thing I ever truly learned was that there was nothing to learn. Every year I'd feel like I had taken away some grand insight into player development, the offense, the defense only to realize everything I kinda thought I knew wasn't really true. A frosh WR can catch every single pass thrown to him by the Scout QB but a ball is coming at him from the starter with more zip and it bounces off his facemask. Good offense? Good defense? Maybe they both suck and one just sucked worse that day. Coyle had the right idea, tour the facilities, free BBQ tent for the season tix, etc. That was the best fan fest I've been to. Unfortunately I feel like the BBQ went away in a giant purple gopher truck.

Are they doing the Free BBQ/Food tent for season ticket holders again this year? I haven't seen that written about anywhere or mentioned

I don't believe so no.

I appreciate that they are willing to do something, but I am deeply disappointed they have cut the only open practice that remained.

The stuff they are replacing it with is of little interest to me. I don't think I am going to go.

This might be great for kids, casual fans, etc. I hope a lot of them go and have a great time,

Not sure it us going to be popular with the die hards that really just want to watch football. I continue to be concerned with how badly out of touch the athletic department is with the fan base.
This is probably a HCDB decision, right?

Given the way the spring game went, with the lousy 'select autograph tables' in the concourses, basically ignoring the people in the stands and the lack of anything significant regarding Fan Fest, it seems safe to say this new AD's priorities do not seem to include fan appreciation type stuff, really is a shame that left with Coyle. Finally felt like we meant something to the program. Now feels like they really don't give a crap.

The single best way to improve the fan experience, from this season ticket holder's perspective, is to have a winning and exciting product on the field. He have half of that.

From the water is wet department: If Babers thinks (this has nothing to do with Wildhack) that having all practices closed puts the program in the best position to start winning, let's roll.

I would think the ultimate call is John's. Would not be surprised though if HCDB lobbied against having an open practice.

I will probably still go, more so to see the other Olympic sports practice than to watch middle aged men make fools of themselves.

When I was a kid, all practices for basketball and football were open (though you had to look through an obscured fence on Lancaster to watch football practice).

Then football practices during the season were closed.

Then the spring practices were closed, except for the spring game, which really isn't a practice either.

Meanwhile, basketball practices moved the the Melo Center and became closed. All of them. Unless you consider (Not) Midnight Madness to be a practice, which is isn't.

There was an open practice for Ernie Davis Club members once. But that is gone now.

If you knew someone in the military, you might be able to get to watch the team practice at Fort Drum. That has been discontinued, at least for now.

That leaves the Fan Fest practice as the last practice crumb for SU fans. And now that has been taken too.

I don't mind the closed practice, they are limited in number and coaches don't like wasting them, but still put on a good event. That event two years ago with coaches in Manley meeting people, having the IPF open, having Floyd Little and co. taking pictures with families, a uniform try-on station for the kids, a soccer game against GT and the BBQ for season ticket holders was a great event. My kids loved it, I loved it, and even if we didn't get to see the practice session, it would have still been a really great day.

I hear ya. As someone that never attended any practices I don't have the same sense of loss. I can see the point from both sides. Something that you've always enjoyed that has been a piece of your connection to the program has eroded away. At the same time, in an era of straight to youtube videos from a phone, a non-issue 15-20 yrs ago, coaches have felt the need to restrict access, and with their restricted time with the athletes they don't want to waste any of it.

The landscape has changed. Maybe when the program is back where it belongs, the coaches won't worry as much about losing a practice to a scrimmage and one of those crums will be tossed back.

They do the yard sale every 3-4 years. Next one likely in 2019.

Thanks. Was looking to score some of the jerseys from last season. They're nowhere to be found on eBay.

For the record, I have no problem restricting access to the practices during the season. And I guess I can see where it might help the opponents a bit if spring practices were completely open.

But the Babers' offense is well known and established. They aren't going to win any games because the opponents don't know what is coming. If they aren't installing a game plan, I find it hard to believe there is a lot to be gained allowing fans access to an early preseason practice or two, or to some of the spring practices. I think the coaches aren't afraid of leaks in terms of strategies. They are more concerned about news on the Internet on where all the players stand in terms of depth charts, playing time, etc. That could cause unhappiness from parents and family and maybe hurt the pride of some proud players.

But in football, there are no secrets. The truth is going to eventually come out. I think the staff just doesn't want to deal with those headaches before the season starts, so they can focus on coaching the players up and installing packages.

If I didn't remember how good it used to be to be a Syracuse fan (in terms of access to the practices), it wouldn't be a big deal. Oh well, I hope they can coach as well as they can close doors, pull down shades and lock windows. If so, we are going to win a lot of games soon.

There not cheap but if you contact Manny's they can usually hook you up with whatever you are looking for. I know several people have had good luck with them in the past. The yard sale is a good event to get your hands on unique stuff but with SU who knows for sure what the next one will look like if there is one.

I do remember HCDB saying last year that there a lot of things about the offense that aren't understood and he wants to keep it that way. I think it may have more to do about how they go about teaching and practicing it versus game day strategy. It's why the other teams running it have HCs or OCs that have come directly from the coaching tree.
