You only do that if you’ve never contacted someone on another team to try to talk them into transferring. I don’t think UNC (or any other school) can throw stones here. It’s just the way it it.

The college transfer “rules” (really there aren’t any) are far looser than US professional sports or even the former paragon of free agency/highest bidder, the English Premier League. In those instances players at least have to abide by their contracts, and can’t walk during the season.
If players feel entitled to explore new opportunities, why shouldn’t programs be able to “waive” underperformers? Maybe that’s already happening in effect.
Maybe players need to be under contract just like coaches.

Many players will take a portal to nowhere.

I can understand that some are looking for more playing time, at a program with different systems and/or more openings at their position(s), possibly at a lower-level program. Some are not happy at all with where they are.

There are others that are not realistic. Having been a famous person in high school and now not getting any, or very little, playing time can be frustrating. Some have reached their athletic pinnacle. It would be wise to realize that this may have happened. They can keep fighting at their current school, while getting the most out of their scholarship/education.

Taking the portal to nowhere literally gets you nowhere.
