2022 Mets thread

The Mets trade for Tyler Naquin and Phillip Diehl.

Naquin is another left handed hitter. He is an outfielder. Not good against lefties but pretty solid against right handed pitchers. He is a rental who will be a free agent at the end of the season. The expectation is that he will become the fourth outfielder and perhaps help out some at DH.

Diehl is a left handed pitcher who is 28 and has struggled in several chances to pitch at the MLB level. He has decent stuff and has been good at AAA. Maybe they can do something with him.

Guessing this will lead to Jankowski getting DFAed.

They gave up two young players not considered top prospects.

The end appears to be near for Dom Smith.

With Drew Smith on the DL and Holderman on the Pirates, there is an acute need for at least one more reliever.

Nogosek is pitching really well for the Syracuse Mets. He might get called up.

Another player on the Syracuse Mets that might be a call is Bryce Montes de Oca. He is physically imposing. 6'7, 265. Throws very hard, can get to triple digits. He has only been up in Syracuse for a few weeks, so it is probably too early but he is a name to remember.

Got the win for Syracuse yesterday. And oh yeah, Francisco Alvarez got the game winning home run to win the game. His batting average is up to .145. Not great but he appears to be getting more comfortable in AAA.

I disagree about Escobar- he's been showing signs of life with the bat after a bad first half. I wonder what the "bigger moves to come are -and when they might happen. With all the trouble the Mets have had scoring runs the last two months I want something more than Vogelsbach and Naquin and Diehl may be able to 'deal' but I doubt he is the answer to our bullpen problems.

I found this article from yesterday depressing:

On a brighter note here is a cool Pete article

Not big the way Aaron Judge is big, of course.

Let's hope the newest big dude starts flexing some of that power. 3 games in batting .333 with 2 hits and 3 walks also 3 strikeouts. Nice that he is getting on base but at his size like him driving in runs and hitting dingers.

Tough call on how to deal with Escobar.

By all accounts he is terrific in the clubhouse. Mets management has reportedly tried hard to build a positive culture by adding guys who are great teammates.

Benching Escobar might affect this.

I thought he was roughly average defensively this year but advanced metrics say he has been really poor.

He was worse than bad hitting in the first half. I don't think I have ever seen a Met fail so many times to score a runner from 3rd with less than 2 outs.

He has shown signs of improvement in recent weeks. Thought I think it is mostly a reflection of the Mets facing more lefthanded starting pitches recently. He is a much better hitter batting right handed than left handed (.261 BA vs .200).

If they do bench Escobar against right handed pitchers, I would seriously consider playing McNeil at 3B and Guillorme at 2B.

I hope the bigger moves involve getting a couple of reliable relief pitchers. Preferably one righty and one lefty.

They could use a right handed bat too. Sounds like it might be Vientos.

If the Mets can convert Dom Smith and JD Davis into 2 good relievers, I will be pretty happy. Even though I think both will do well elsewhere.

One last thing. Here is video of Alvarez' game hitting walk off HR last night.

It was way up in the air, and if you look close, you can see it bounce off the light tower up high. Gotta be over 400 feet.

He has a compact swing. Amazing how much power he can deliver with it. Reminds me of Bob Horner.

Diaz = Riveraesque - This year. Now do it for the next 15 years.

Mariano Rivera Stats | Baseball-Reference.com

Starling Marte since 7/5/; 24 for 58 = .414. His batting average has increased from .282 to .305.

Marte has been incredible. Nimmo with a huge HR. Vogelbach a nice night too.

Gotta throw some credit to Bass too. Things were rocky early on and he fought like hell to push through 6 blanking the Marlins over his last 4 innings.

5 in a row. Maybe they can keep it rolling. Atlanta not slowing down at all sticking 3 behind. Gonna need to get separation by beating them in the upcoming series.

David Peterson starting for the Mets today. Maybe he shoulda done a little better against the Yankees.

Alvarez just hit a 2 run shot in the bottom of the first. he now has two homers and a double in this series. He's now batting .184 but with an on-base percentage of .388.

Another nice win. Players really working counts. Hitting it opposite field situationally. 27 games over .500. Another high for this team.

As SWC noted, Alvarez hit another homer (opposite field) today. Vientos had a nice double and another solid game. Might be his last in Syracuse if some speculation is right.

Trevor May pitched an inning in relief for Syracuse as well. He is tentatively penciled to re-join the real Mets Wednesday

McCann hit an HR for Binghamton today. He is tentatively penciled to re-join the real Mets Thursday.

We have Max, Jake and Bassitt in the 3 game series against the Nationals. Then the Braves.

The Braves play the Phillies while we are playing the Nats. The Phillies are playing well and have won 5 straight.

Things are looking pretty positive right now.

You mean the Syracuse Mets are not the real Mets?

(I call them the 'Smets'.)

Vogelbach so far batting .375 as a Met with 6 hits and 5 BB. Very Nice OPS too plus they are winning with him.

That said.. 11 times on base and only 2 runs scored. As well as 0 RBIs and 0 HRs. Let's hope those last two start coming around.

Pumped about deGrom tonight! Going to be cautiously optimistic with him. Now that Soto is off the Nats, I can’t think of a better lineup for deGrom to face his first game back.

Its been described as another rehab game. I hope it goes better than the last one...

Mets trade JD Davis for Darin Ruf.

Another give away of a younger, talented player for a washed up bum.

David Stearns can't get here soon enough.

The only good thing is that this hopefully stops any attempts to get JD Martinez, William Contreras or any other hitter.

The focus should be on getting relief pitchers. Just saw we lost Robertson to the Phillies (again).

I don't understand Mets management at all. Hopefully it is not too late and they can get a couple of decent arms in the final hours.

So, the Mets are all in with the "deGrom is our big add at the trade deadline" way of thinking?

Not quite as upset about Ruf given the arms race got hotter with the Padres loading up more. Not to mention it will be interesting to see what happens prospect wise.

All that said the season really comes down to deGrom and relief. Diaz has been stellar. We need a solid rotation of relief though and with injuries it's a mess. If deGrom flames out again due to injury and we don't get relief help.. well we get what we asked for.

With Holderman dealt and Smith on the IL, a bad situation with relief pitching got a lot worse.

Just add Chafin and I will be happy. He shouldn't require a top 10 type prospect for the Mets.

Add him, and I think we can make do with Nogosek and hopefully Megill is a revelation when he comes off the IL sometime in August.
