2022 Mets thread

Maybe May or Megill could fill the relief role.

I still want another clean-up bat behind Pete. We've got the fourth-best record with the defending champion Braves crawling up our back and everybody else seems to be muscling up. Holding on to your prospects can be a good thing to do but some of these guys play the same position - and they are still just prospects.

Here's hoping Alvarez comes on like gangbusters.

deGrom looking good first game back still gives one up and vs an anemic lineup. Mets can't hit crap off some nobody.

The Mets have rarely scored many runs for Jake. Some things, like this and Jake’s excellence, never seem to change.

It's uncanny. I mean it can clearly be a matter of luck and chance at times but the consistency including it making no difference in the other SP...

It's a typical DeGrom start - the Mets can't score and the bullpen sucks. I certainly wouldn't blame him if he wanted to go to another team.

The 3 guys who homered that inning hit their 1st, 4th and 8th of the year... sigh

I like the Givens trade. That was a rare Met trade that made sense and might make the team better.

I was mad to trade JD for Ruf straight up. 35 years old. .216 BA. -0.5 WAR. You should get a player like that free on the waiver wire.

Was really mad when it came out the Mets also sent 3 prospects in the deal. Sigh.

The biggest weakness with the team is bullpen pen. It has been all season. It was a problem last year. It wasn’t addressed during the off season and it still hasn’t been addressed. We traded Holderman and got Givens. Similar stats but Colin is 6 years younger.

I hope things work out and the lack of bullpen depth doesn’t hurt the team. Looks like it has already cost the team a game tonight.

This game is as Metsian as it gets. Braves blowing out the Phillies of course. Lead will be anywhere from 1.5 - 3.5 when the five game series begins on Thursday. Going to the second game of the doubleheader Saturday night and praying they will still be in first.

The Mets' record in Jake DeGrom games:

2014 11-11
2015 20-10
2016 12-12
2017 17-14
2018 14-18
2019 14-18
2020 8-4
2021 11-4
Total: 107-91, 79-55 when he didn't win the Cy Young award and 28-36 when he did.

It wasn’t straight up. Not only did the Mets send Davis to the Giants, they also sent 3 minor leaguers as well.

Yes, I am not happy about that. Have heard a bunch of baseball pundits scratching their head trying to figure out that trade as well.

I am glad we didn't send prospects to the Cubs for 2 months of Contreras. Good for Mets management if they felt the price was too high.

I think bringing in a catcher from the outside so late in the year, especially one who is not known to be good defensively, is not a great idea.

Especially when we have Alvarez so close to MLB. He had 2 hits yesterday and his BA is up to to .190 range now. Looks like he is figuring things out. Give him a couple more weeks in AAA and call him up in mid to late August. You can work him in at catcher and maybe get him some at bats at DH too, on the off chance Ruf remains a .216 hitter.

Getting May and adding Givens will help bullpen depth a lot. Though playing 5 games in 4 days against the Braves is going to be tough.

I assume that doubleheader is going to lead to calling Peterson up again. Still hoping when that happens, we go to a 6 man rotation.

Scherzer is 38. Carrasco is 35. deGrom is 34. Bassitt is 33. Even Walker is 30. It has been a long season. Let's give everyone extra rest and keep the group strong for September and beyond.

I didn't mind Szapucki given I don't think he ever will have the stuff to stay in the majors but the other two were major head scratchers. Single A guys and way too early to tell how good they might be. Absolutely stupid move to throw them in when you already are giving up more than fair value in Davis

Braves lose and up 6-0 on Nats today. Vogelbach with his first HR and RBIs in style with a GS.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen a follow through (or lack of follow through) like his before. As long as he’s hitting home runs though, he can swing with one hand for all I care.

He hits mortar shots and likes to admire the arc. He does seem to have a quick bat.

Givens giveth.

He got 2 guys out, gave up 5 hits with a 9-0 lead and they all scored.

At least he didn't walk anybody. I hate it when they do that.

Just another reliever to contribute to giving up HRs. New addition has to be relieved with a 9-0 lead. Pristine ERA gets a big spike to boot.

Good God what an awful 9th inning.
Givens looked awful. Lugo looked bad. Nogosek and Lopez were just sent down after also getting bombed. Hell of a way to for him introduce himself to Mets fans.

On the positive side, Bassitt was great. May looked good. Pete and Vogelbach had nice games and Nimmo and McNeil both had 3 hits.

Back to a 3.5 game lead over the Braves. I think that means the Mets will remain in first even if they only win 1 of the 5 games against Atlanta this weekend.

Bassitt throwing 7 innings helps position the bullpen well for the coming doubleheader. It is a shame Givens was so bad. Another shutout would have been nice.

McCann comes back tomorrow and hopefully Megill sometime in the next 2 weeks or so. I assume adding Ruf almost guarantees Alvarez will not be called up until September. I hope he proves he is worth that big package of players.

I do think Givens should be ok. Big thing now is you aren't pitching for a basement dweller this season so 9 run lead or not you gotta go out there and pitch like its 1. One thing with Buck at least is he is a show me manager.

So far we have looked solid against Atl so at worst ( knock on wood) I would see us lose 3 out of 5. Great opportunity if we flip that or better to get some breathing room with another series with Atl coming right up soon after.

I lay there in my lawn chair, watching the sun go down and I'm thinking...

We're up 3 1/2 games so I figure if we lose all 5, we'll be down 1 1/2 games. if we win 1, we'll be down 1/2 game. If we win 2, we'll be up 1/2 game. We win 3, we'll be up 1 1/2 games. If we win 4 we'll be up 2 1/2 games and if we win all five we'll be up 3 1/2 games. But that's where we are.

I tried this. : We're up 3 1/2 games. if we win the first one, we'll be up 4 1/2 games. If we then win the second one, we'll be up 5 1/2 games. If we win the third one, we'll be up 6 1/2 games. If we win the fourth one, we'll be up 7 1/2 games. If we win the 5th one, we'll be up 8 1/2 games...

The sun made it over the horizon OK.

Agree with all that but t one quibble.

I think if we win 1, we still end up up by 1/2 a game.

Let’s say we win the first. Now up 4 1/2 games. Then we lose the last 4. Still ip by a half game.

Being a Met fan and expecting the worst, this makes me feel a little better.
