the nolan ryan doc is out for those interested.. Pretty neat discussion of his entire career, cool stories and lots of interviews with other greats of the era about facing him

Facing Nolan

Another good win. Peterson was terrific. It looks to me so the Braves are not as good offensively against lefties.

It’s a shame Lopez could not finish the game. It might cost us game 2.

Thinking that we have Givens and May as available relievers for game 2. Lopez and Rodriquez only pitch if the game gets out of hand or goes into extra innings. That is a major concern.

That said, it is nice to be up 2-1 in the series and have Scherzer and deGrom starting the final 2 games.

That ain’t half bad.

Megill, Smith, get well soon!

6-9. The high-scoring game was won on two defensive plays: Acuna's catch of Pete's drive at the orange line and Harris throwing out Guillorme, (who should not have bene sent home by Cora).

Still, both teams have gotten out to big leads only to have the other team rally and then held them off for the win. Tomorrow's double header will be wild and HUGE!

(prepared this last night and never hit "Post reply")

Regarding today's first game, it was another game where one of these teams got off to a sizeable lead and held on for dear life. These teams don't give up on gave. It was disappointing to see Lugo, who said that he had "turned it around" still struggle. I couldn't understand why he was brought in that early. Ottavino had bad luck. He through some great pitches but Harris fouled off five in a row at 0-2 and then gets an infield single, (what a talent he is!). The ball hits the umpire in the butt! Then Lopez stunk up the joint and forced Buck to use Diaz. Edwin threw only 7 pitches so he might pitch in game 2 but then become unavailable for tomorrow.

Nothing worthwhile is going to be easy...

Nice start tonight for Scherzer. The Braves throughout the season series have show the value of fielding and how solid the Mets have been this year ( for the most part). Hoping Max can keep on cruising and we get another lead. Be great if he can take it all the way to the 8th or 9th.

Wow.. what is D'arnaud batting vs the Mets since going to Atlanta? Seems like he hits everything when playing us.

Big inning from Givens to settle in. Was worried there out of the gate.

Monster sweep today. deGrom tomorrow with a great chance to go up 6.5 games and the reds coming to town.

Not a great day for the bullpen but, other than that the Mets dominated. It was "knuckles on the table" as the Mets seemed to do (almost) everything right all day.

Yep. Insurance runs plus a huge inning from Givens. I'm not counting him out. He has been solid all year and he is a vet. Nerves in game one and a little tonight but he has decent stuff. We keep driving away with the full complement of starters and get Megill back and that should help the pen. Plus enough depth come playoff time barring Smith can get back healthy and effective.

So bigger question now is if there is any hope of reeling in LA... I'm not so sure there is. They are dominating the new look Padres.

There are pros and cons to that. Would love to have home field advantage but it looks like the top seed will have a more difficult path. Currently, the wildcard matchups would be Padres-Braves and Cardinals-Phillies. Top seed would get Padres-Braves winner in division series. I get it. It’s the playoffs and you play who is in front of you. Padres seem to have our number though and that was before their new additions. I want those teams to beat each other up before we send them golfing.

Yeah I hear you. If we get to the NLCS it's tough sledding vs LA with the advantage. That said it's tough given our struggles with SD.

Everybody will be 0-0 when the playoffs start. the Mets had the best team in the league in 1988 and 2006 and lost to teams they had dominated during the season who went on to win the World Series. Then there was 1973 when we beat the Reds, 1999 when we beat the D-Backs, 2000 when we beat the Giants and Cardinals and 2015 when we beat the Dodgers and the Cubs. Oh, and 1969 when we beat the Orioles. All upsets if any post season series can be called an upset in baseball, where everything is done in rotations and there's almost no physical contact with the other team.

I recall a Jack Clark quote. He was once asked by a reporter "who throws harder: Doc Gooden or Roger Clemens"?
Clark: "No one throws harder than Nolan Ryan."

Loves seeing Vogelbach score from first on Canha's double. His hat comes flying off after he rounds third! it was like watching Bart hit a home run...well maybe not quite THAT much fun.

Interesting decision-making: DeGrom perfect through 5. How long do you go with him? A lot to think about but I think Buck already knows.

...Decision made by DeGrom with a walk and a two-run homer at the end of the 6th.

Keith had had a great line before that: "The only place you see something like this is Williamsport when the pitcher has a beard."

I hope he was just frustrated walking off. Sure looked like he might have had some tightness in that shoulder as he was finishing up. Sure hope I'm wrong.

Couple huge innings by Rodriguez. Especially in a big moment as the Braves had life getting that HR off deGrom

Suddenly the Mets and Yankees are both 70-39! The Dodgers are 74-33 and the Astros 70-40.

We finally have our hot streak, winning 12 of 14 and are 6 1/2 games up.

But we play the Braves four more in Atlanta from 8/15-18 and three more down there from 9/30-10/2. Maybe we can wrap up the division before that last one?

My internal Mets fan is reminding me of 2007 and 2008. But this is a heck of a pitching staff with a couple more guys due back from the DL.

I have us at 37-14 vs. the division, (.725)

While I feel like the Mets' rotation is getting stronger the Braves' is showing chinks in the armor. Bigtime emotional series getting 4 out of 5 and the 12th game in a row since the last day off with 3 more vs Cincy. Need to avoid a letdown and keep distancing ourselves so when a slump does hit, like you are seeing the Yanks go through now, it doesn't ratchet up the heat too much.
