2022 Mets thread

Another in a long line of improbable wins. As the season progresses, it seems more and more that this might be a team of destiny. Still a lot of baseball to be played, but there is something special going on.

Butto was horrific in the first but he found himself and pitched much better after that. Buck probably left him in one inning too late but I don’t think we win if he doesn’t get through 4 innings.

He has a good fastball that perhaps with better mechanics can get up to the 96-97 mph range. His calling card has been his change up all through the minors but he left it up in the zone too often and got hurt with it (that was what was hit for the 3 run HR that was the key play of the first inning). When he settled down, he started getting his big breaking ball over as well as his fastball. Give him a full season in AAA, don’t trade him and I think we have a passable starting pitcher here.

Fisher looked better than any lefty reliever we have had since we lost Loup last season. Nice breaking all, pretty good fastball and he threw strikes. He might stay up with the big club for a while. BTW, Clay, another lefty recently called up, also did not look half bad earlier in the series.

Baty looked like an overwhelmed rookie most of the series. That is going to happen with a young player, I hope he can keep his confidence up and make some adjustments. He has a lot of veteran hitters to help him andI think they will over time.

Perez started again at catcher and looked good offensively and defensively again. Sad that we lost Mazeika. The Giants picked him up. They do a nice job picking up useful players off waivers.

Nice to see Canha playing well. Seems he has stepped things up since Naquin arrived and threatened his playing time. Did you see the bat flip he did after the HR to take the lead in the ninth? It was pretty show boat and not like him at all. I don’t blame him though. That was a huge hit.

Diaz has struggled to throw his slider 2 appearances in a row. It didn’t have much movement and he struggled to throw it for strikes. Hope he is okay and this is not a sign his arm is bothering him. He was still throwing around 100 mph with his fastball anyway…..

Sounds like the Mets would like to use Walker instead of deGrom Tuesday. Guessing that means they would like to give Jake an extra day of rest. Which is great but if it results in Walker pitching too early from his injury, that would not be good either. I guess if I had to risk losing one pitcher for the rest of the season, it would be Walker. I will say I bet whoever ends up starting is unlikely to go more than 5 innings. Buck will not push them.

Wednesday is a travel day, so someone is going to get a couple of extra days rest before their next start. Then we have a 4 game series with the Rockies, who are horrific on the road, at Citi Field, then another ‘travel’ day on Monday, then a 3 game series in NYC against the Dodgers.

So I think the rotation looks like this for the next week:

Monday vs Yanks at Yankee Stadium: German vs Scherzer
Tuesday vs Yanks at Yankee Stadium: Montas vs deGrom or Walker (thinking Walker)
Wednesday off
Thursday vs Rockies at Citi Field: TBD vs deGrom?
Friday vs Rockies at Citi Field: TBD vs Bassitt? (he could pitch Thursday but want to give him an extra day)
Saturday vs Rockies at Citi Field: TBD vs Scherzer (or Peterson or Williams if they want to give Max more time). I would give it to Williams.
Sunday vs Rockies at Citi Field: TBD vs Scherzer?
Monday off
Tuesday vs Dodgers at Citi Field: TBD vs Walker?
Wednesday vs Dodgers at Citi Field: TBD vs deGrom?
Thursday vs Dodgers at Citi Field: TBD vs Bassitt?

If we do it like this, we give everyone extra rest. It is an older rotation and I think it is wise to give them some extra time to recover. Want to keep them fresh for the playoffs as best we can.

After this comes series vs Washington (home), Pittsburgh (road), Miami (road), the Cubs (home) and the Pirates (home). That stretch right there is going to be a key one for the Mets. Gotta continue to beat up the bad teams. This team had done that well all year and it needs to continue.

I like Scherzer and DeGrom as a 1-2 punch and d0n't want to break that up. And why move DeGrom to get Walker back a day sooner?

Nick Plummer came up and hits home runs sin successive games. Then he goes 0 for 20 and winds up back in Syracuse, still a prospect. Brett Baty hits a home run his first time up. He's 2 for 20 since and...
Meanwhile Mark Vientos has a 9 game winning streak in which he's batting .459.

Seems like buck wants to split Max and Jake to give the pen more of a break. The epilogue of this season is going to be written by the bullpen. Frustrating because everyone in nyc knew the pen was a problem except for apparently the Mets.

The flip was beautiful, especially after the Segura celebration in the 8th. This is a fun call.

I don't understand how splitting Max and Jake gives the bullpen more of a break. Jake doesn't give the bullpen a break because of his pitch count.

I suspect they would prefer to pitch Walker Tuesday because they want to be conservative with Jake and not push him too hard. Pitching in Yankee Stadium against the Yankees, with a full house and lots of emotion, on only 4 days rest, might be setting Jake up for getting hurt again.

If Walker is okay to go, Jake would get 2 extra days rest (Wednesday is a day off). If the goal is to keep Jake healthy and available for the playoffs, I think this is the way to go. The Mets have been very conservative about dealing with Jake's injury this time and it has worked. I have no issues with continuing to do this.

With 2 off days coming in the next week, this is a chance to give everyone a much needed rest. We don't have to put Max and Jake out there every 5th day and I don't think we should. There are 4 off days scheduled for September, which should allow the Mets to continue to give the starting pitchers an extra day of rest here and there. This would be great IMHO.

I heard it can also be about having an anchor in each series. With them going back to back, there’s usually one series where neither of them pitch. Now each team they face will be guaranteed to see one of them.

I want to beat the Yankees twice and keep our momentum rolling.

It's heard to wear down a pitcher who is throwing strikes. You have to wear him out instead.

Now we got with walker, not DeGrom, to avoid the sweep.

Meanwhile the Braves lead the Pirates, 2-1 in the seventh...Maybe we could loan the Bucs Vogelsbach?

The guys look gassed. Happens when you have 13 games in 12 days with almost two weeks without an off day. We’ll see what happens tomorrow but Wednesday is much needed for a little rest.

Braves beat the Pirates so lead is down to 3. Also, who is in charge of making this crazy schedule? It’s August 22nd and the Mets have played the Phillies 19 times and haven’t played the Pirates once. How do two teams in the same league not play each other until September 5th? Absurdity.

It wasn't the normal energy level for a Mets-Yankees game. I think the double-header and Sunday's marathon took a lot out of the team.

Tonight's game features two starters who are really struggling. Could be a high scoring crazy game.

Montas vs Walker

Hope Walker looks more like his normal self. I have a bad feeling about this.

Saw the Jake is now scheduled to pitch on Thursday or Friday. He already got an extra day of rest with the off day Wednesday. Needing 2 or 3 more days is, I think, something to be concerned about. I hope he is okay and able to continue from this point forward.

Max looked tired last night from the first pitch. We have a veteran staff, it is late in the season and players can getting gassed. Really need to start thinking about using a 6 man rotation, or at least making sure the pitchers who need extra rest get it.

The goal should be to have all the starting pitchers well rested for the playoffs. The regular starters as well, IMHO.

What is the best ticket reselling app for Mets games? Stubhub? Something else?

Definitely a little concerned about deGrom. Hopefully all is well with him and Buck just wants to give him a few extra days. This schedule is definitely doing no favors. That first week pushed back into doubleheaders throughout the season didn’t help any. Hoping the weaker September schedule helps with both wins and peace of mind for us fans.

Torres takes off for third with two outs and two strikes.

Keith "That was another Rocket J. Squirrel"

You're the go-ahead run on 2nd in the top of the 7th, 1 out. A ball is hit to right center to the warning track. Shouldn't you just wait at second and tag up to third if it's caught. if it isn't you're going to score anyway, aren't you?

I was looking at Walker before and after the all-star break last season and this one.

2021 Before
7W 3L 2.90ERA .205oppoents batting average 8.8 strikeouts and 3.1 walks per 9 innings.
2021 After
0W 8L 6.38ERA .254OBA 7.6S-3.1W

2022 Before
9W 2L 2.00ERA .233OBA 7.1S-2.4W
2022 After (through tonight - more to come)
1W 1L 7.10ERA .278OBA 5.7S-3.4W

Pete doing a lot of rumblin' and stumblin' tonight.

Not a great road trip at 4-6. Thankfully, a day off tomorrow. Hopefully they come out Thursday and crush the Rockies. Two game lead now and likely to be a game and a half after tomorrow as I’m not sure the Pirates can win the Little League World Series, nonetheless beat the Braves.

It would be nice to not have to grind out at bats night after night and get a few more homers. Despite that Mets were one foot away from taking the lead back on Lindor's foul ball.

I think the bats will show up more often than not. I’m much more worried about the bullpen. I hope our starters are good at running marathons in the postseason because I can definitely see the bullpen being the reason our run ends earlier than expected.

Braves record in series ending games is comical at this point. It's really a weird thing. So I hope we can finish the sweep vs the Pirates today but I'm not sure they will.

The "keep the train moving" concept in baseball is like a football team without quick strike capability who has to score on 10 play drives, (We've had a few of those.) The problem is, nothing can go wrong in those ten plays, or the drive will stall or end. Trying to bunch singles and walks in baseball works if you avoid double plays, lineouts and strike outs with runners on third and one out. The lack of a second slugger, (like Conforto), behind Pete hurts us. And I think it hurts Pete. They can pitch around him and he has to try to get those singles he's mostly getting now. Something like having Canha hot right now doesn't change that.
