2022 Mets thread

This guy just shut us out over 7 innings:

I know I should be happy about the Mets taking 3 out of 4. The Braves having the fourth best record in the league and keeping up every step of the way just makes it so much more stressful though, especially with how the playoffs are structured this season.

Hey! somebody besides the Mets beat the Braves two in a row!

The only thing I can see slowing the Braves right now is that with Harris, Grissom and Strider they have 3 rookies now playing a big role. Will they regress to the mean or not?

Since they are rookies, how do we know what their mean is?

Since they are rookies, how do we know what their mean is?

We don't. Common sense/history would lend one to believe that most rookies will have their ups and downs and won't have all star level numbers a whole season. If the Braves have three hands down future all stars in Strider, Harris and Grissom that is a scary reality.

Just watched the entirety of the Mets' Old Timer's Day ceremony:

It got me wondering what my all-time Mets team would look like. I came up with this:

C- Mike Piazza
1B- Keith Hernandez
2B - Edgardo Alfonso
SS- Jose Reyes
3B- David Wright
LF- Cleon Jones
CF- Carlos Beltran
RF- Darryl Strawberry
DH- Pete Alonso
SP- Tom Seaver
SP- Jake DeGrom
SP- Dwight Gooden
SP- Jerry Koosman
Set-up: Tug Mcgraw
Closer: John Franco (If Diaz can repeat this season for the next couple of years, he'll be here.)

Your thoughts?

5th starter - David Cone?

Dodgers put former Met Reed out there in a big spot, great chance to pull out a win and they hardly made him sweat and he gets his first save of his career.

I prefer four-man rotations but if you want a 5th he'd been a good choice. So would Jon Matlack, Al Leiter, Ron Darling...how about R. A. Dickey?

Pete's back to swinging under the high, hard one.

Dickey was unhittable his Cy Young season. Nasty, nasty stuff.

Mets are finding out what it means to be under pressure... and the hitters seem to be faltering. It doesn't help that they are now facing a lot of lefties.

This season is all on Epplier... we've needed one more consistent power bat and better relievers the whole season and he made the decision that our prospects were worth more than the available players. I'm still not sure what he was thinking w/ Ruff... we traded multiple prospects for him I believe. I'll give him *some* credit for Voglebach, but the rest of the trade deadline pickups have been pretty meh.

Agree, the Ruff deal was inexcusable.

I think the Phils got Robertson for their 26th best prospect. Something like that. He would have helped the Mets so much.

Was thinking the payroll was why we didn't go after Robertson. I know the Mets are really close to the big salary cap limit (the Cohen level).

Just checked. Robertson is making $3.5 million. Ruf was making $3 million. JD Davis was making $2.75 million.

Ruf is hitting .206 for the Mets with 0 HRs. JD Davis is hitting .278 with 4 HRs for the Giants. JD is 29. Ruf is 36. And we included 2 good prospects to sweeten the deal further. Arggggh!

We need someone other than Lugo, Ottovino and Diaz to be a reliable reliever. Rodriguez, Givens, and the many others who have got a shot have not got it done.

Heck, Lugo has been pretty suspect too.

Carrasco is supposed to rejoin the rotation next week. That frees Peterson to become a reliever. Megill and Drew Smith are supposed to be pretty close. Maybe Hunter can help.

The thing I don't understand is why Trevor Williams has been largely limited to spot starts and long relief. Would like to see him take over pitching to finish off the 6th and maybe get through to the 8th. I have a lot more confidence in him than Rodriguez or Givens. I guess Buck wants him in reserve in case a starter blows up. But we are going to lose more close games in the sixth needing reliable relief then than needing a long reliever on the rate times our starters can knocked out early.

Hope Jake can get through 7 or 8 tonight.

Plus 1 to all of that... it's fine to give up on JD, but to do so for an older, worse player and also giving up prospects to do so? HUH? I really hope that wasn't a Sandy special.

Also agree on Williams... the guy hasn't given up a run in how long? Also what happened to that clay kid or the other guy was a banker? Why are we seeing Rodriguez or Givens? I'd rather see Mr and Mrs Met at this point.

Once we get to the playoffs, in theory Mets are okay with starter -> Lugo -> Ottavino -> Diaz with the every other day schedule. But more and more it looks like we will get there as the WC. Thankfully the schedule is much easier post-Dodgers.

"The typical time of return from a UCL tear is around five weeks. The Mets placed Baty on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Aug. 29 and recalled outfielder Terrance Gore from Syracuse."

When are they going to call up Mark Vientos?

I just thought I'd summarize what we gave up for Vogelbach and Ruf:

The big losses would seem to be Davis and Holderman. Zwack is listed as the 30th best prospect in the Giants' system:

Seymour is 23 with a 4.22 minor league ERA in 77 games. Szapucki has a 2.95 ERA in 70 games but an 8-18 W-L record. In 9 major league innings, he's given up 16 earned runs.

Escobar is still a decent hitter batting right handed. He is awful batting left handed (against righties). That is why platooning him with Baty could have been effective.

Gore can’t play 3B. Guillorme is still hurt so he can’t help. I think Escobar is the only real option to play 3B right now (if McNeill moves there, who plays 2B?).

So we have basically almost a sure out every time a catcher hits and at 3B too, at least against right handers.

Vientos is one of the best hitters in the IL. I would much rather give the 3B job to Vientos, at least against right handers. He is hot, he has power, he is hitting for average too. They must really think he is a mess defensively.

Guessing Gore will mostly pinch run. That is his best and perhaps only real skill. Not a great way to use a roster position. We are burning another on a third catcher who cannot hit.

If I was a starting pitcher, I would be mad.

Quite a night. DeGrom, Nimmo's catch, his and Jake's reaction, Timmy Trumpet and Diaz. Braves winning 3-0 in 9th, (looking to break a 3-game losing streak!) so it preserved the 3game lead. Tomorrow night's game, (Bassitt vs. Kershaw) will be for the season series. After that, we could be hard to catch.

In the post-game presser, Buck was asked what the plan was at third base. He was non-committal but noted that they will get to call up two more players tomorrow. I think Mark Vientos will be one of them.

"Vientos, who hit one home run in his high school career, has not only grown into his plus-power projection, he has shown growth and maturity each season in the minor leagues. Vientos began journaling during his ruts at the plate, and at just 22-years-old, has developed some impressive leadership qualities.

The main knock against Vientos is his glove. The Mets are an organization that values positional versatility, and Vientos isn't known for his defensive skills. He mostly serves as a DH and first baseman, and has basically been moved off of playing third base. The good news is that Vientos is working with former Mets infielder and current minor league instructor Tim Teufel to improve defensively."

"Calling up Vientos could potentially provide a spark to the Mets' lineup from the DH spot. It would also allow Vogelbach and Baty to properly heal their ailments, whether it be on the bench or IL. Not to mention, deadline acquisition Darin Ruf hasn't been able to get things going in a part-time DH platoon role with Vogelbach: .206 average, .557 OPS."

"Asked directly about two players — Triple-A third baseman Mark Vientos and recently-demoted catcher Michael Perez — Showalter would only go as far as saying that both are “candidates” for a spot on the expanded roster."
