2022 Mets thread

I just thought I'd summarize what we gave up for Vogelbach and Ruf:

The big losses would seem to be Davis and Holderman. Zwack is listed as the 30th best prospect in the Giants' system:

Seymour is 23 with a 4.22 minor league ERA in 77 games. Szapucki has a 2.95 ERA in 70 games but an 8-18 W-L record. In 9 major league innings, he's given up 16 earned runs.
In the grand scheme of things those moves are pretty meaningless and we'll all forget about them next year. JD had all the chances in the world to prove it and he did nothing.

The big issue is what we got back has been just as bad so we spent capital without getting any real return. Yet teams like the Phillies made solid moves... not a good sign for Eppler and Sandy now that we are one more year closer to the end of the Milwaukee contract for that front office guy we are trying to steal from them.

Quite a night. DeGrom, Nimmo's catch, his and Jake's reaction, Timmy Trumpet and Diaz. Braves winning 3-0 in 9th, (looking to break a 3-game losing streak!) so it preserved the 3game lead. Tomorrow night's game, (Bassitt vs. Kershaw) will be for the season series. After that, we could be hard to catch.

I'm gonna sleep with the sounds of trumpets in my dreams... it will be a good night!

Just watched the entirety of the Mets' Old Timer's Day ceremony:

It got me wondering what my all-time Mets team would look like. I came up with this:

C- Mike Piazza
1B- Keith Hernandez
2B - Edgardo Alfonso
SS- Jose Reyes
3B- David Wright
LF- Cleon Jones
CF- Carlos Beltran
RF- Darryl Strawberry
DH- Pete Alonso
SP- Tom Seaver
SP- Jake DeGrom
SP- Dwight Gooden
SP- Jerry Koosman
Set-up: Tug Mcgraw
Closer: John Franco (If Diaz can repeat this season for the next couple of years, he'll be here.)

Your thoughts?

I'd have a spot for Rusty Staub.

Another nice win last night. Jake was again sublime but made a couple of mistake late, when he was presumably getting tired. Nimmo bailed him out with a great catch. Solid relief by Ottovino and Diaz, our two best relievers.

Kershaw against Bassitt this afternoon. Bassitt is an innings eater and I am sure Buck would love to see him get 8 innings in, and turn it over to Diaz. Let's hope that happens.

Marte with another big HR. He is up to 16 now. He is hitting .293, which is 9th in the NL. He is quietly having a really good year. (Squirrel remains 3rd).

The Mets continue to struggle to score runs. but everyone struggles to score runs against the Dodgers.

We play a 3 game series against the Nationals next. These are the last 3 games of this homestand. Not sure what the Nats are going to do. They do have Grey penciled in for Friday night.

I don't think the Mets have announced their starters for this series yet.

They have a decision to make for Friday.

It is Peterson's turn in the rotation but with the off day Monday, Scherzer could pitch. I would much prefer to pitch David Friday and give Max an extra day of rest. But Max is an option.

The problem with pitching Max is that if they do that, they would need a starter for Saturday, because that lines up with the Monday off day. So I think they are almost surely going to give David the start on Friday, and then go with Max on Saturday. That way both guys get an extra day of rest. Ideal.

Carlos is supposed to come off the IL and start Saturday or Sunday. Looks to me as though he will be starting Sunday.

Then the Mets head to Pittsburgh for a 3 game series.

I think the Mets will start Walker on Monday. On Tuesday, it is deGrom's turn to pitch. On Wednesday, it should be Bassitt's turn. All three would get an extra day of rest. Ideal.

Thursday is another off day, then 3 games in Miami. This is when it gets trickier.

I would go with Peterson again on Friday. That gives him a couple of days of extra rest. Then Scherzer on Saturday off 2 days extra rest. Then Carrasco Sunday with a couple of days extra rest.

I suspect they will skip Peterson's turn, and pitch Max, Carrasco and Walker. They all get one extra day of rest. Not a bad option either. That Marlin series is the start of a 13 day straight with no off days. I would at least get David a start in the middle of that stretch to give all the starters another day of rest. Skip one start but not the second. After that stretch, David will probably be a relief pitcher. 3 off days the rest of the regular season and the playoffs have off days regularly as well.

So Buck night have a lefty to play around with a bit for a week or so.

Megill has his first rehab appearance scheduled for today. They want him to pitch 5 times and then bring him up as a reliever. Looking at about September 10th. Drew Smith is penciled in to return around September 12th.

The bullpen could be much deeper in two weeks.

Guillorme is making progress and is expected back around September 10th.

Sounds extremely unlikely Vientos is getting called up. Deven Marerro sounds like he is going to be the guy. The Mets are prioritizing defense right now.

The next couple of weeks will be interesting.

Huge win today and taking 2 out of 3 from LA. Bass didn't go 7 or 8 but still got it done.

May is all the sudden starting to pitch better which would be huge if he keeps it up.

Now we get a stretch where they should be able to rack up a lot of wins and get some guys back on track as well as not over tax the pen. Legit chance to get up 45 plus games over .500.

Great to get 2 of 3 from the Dodgers.

The Dodgers, usually very solid with fundamentals, made some bad mistakes that helped to cost them the gale.

Lux did not charge a slowly hit ground ball sent his way by Marte. Sterling beat it out and later scored on a double by Lindor, who had a terrific game. Made a great play up the middle to get a force, and stole third to set up a Ruf sacrifice fly. That might have been the biggest play Ruf has made since he has been with the Mets.

The next inning, Nimmo hits a high pop up behind Lux with McCann on second and 2 outs. He appears to lose it in the lights and it falls in. Another run aided by a Dodger gaffe.

The Dodgers got 2 runs fairly early in the game but blew a chance for more runs when they had a guy get thrown out at the plate.

Gore came in as a pinch runner and got a steal. Look for more of that in the rest of September.

Bring on the Nationals. Not sure who is starting for the Mets but they are all pretty solid and I like our chances.

So we're 9-7 vs. the Braves, 4-3 vs. the Dodgers, 5-2 vs. the Cardinals, 2-2 vs. the Yankees and 0-4 vs. the Astros.

Astros only team we looked the weaker team against.

"Vientos, who hit one home run in his high school career, has not only grown into his plus-power projection, he has shown growth and maturity each season in the minor leagues. Vientos began journaling during his ruts at the plate, and at just 22-years-old, has developed some impressive leadership qualities.

The main knock against Vientos is his glove. The Mets are an organization that values positional versatility, and Vientos isn't known for his defensive skills. He mostly serves as a DH and first baseman, and has basically been moved off of playing third base. The good news is that Vientos is working with former Mets infielder and current minor league instructor Tim Teufel to improve defensively."

"Calling up Vientos could potentially provide a spark to the Mets' lineup from the DH spot. It would also allow Vogelbach and Baty to properly heal their ailments, whether it be on the bench or IL. Not to mention, deadline acquisition Darin Ruf hasn't been able to get things going in a part-time DH platoon role with Vogelbach: .206 average, .557 OPS."

"Asked directly about two players — Triple-A third baseman Mark Vientos and recently-demoted catcher Michael Perez — Showalter would only go as far as saying that both are “candidates” for a spot on the expanded roster."
Back in the day, Tim Teufel was a valuable Rotisserie (Fantasy) player. Usually qualified for multiple positions.

Well, the Braves crushed Alcantra but the Mets got a big inning to take command against the Nats and the bullpen, (Givens, Rodriguez and Lugo) shut them out after that.

My positive outlook is 3 games up with 29 to play is better than 3 games up with 30 to play.

Diaz’s whole scene is annoying, and if it wasn’t for some stupid wind, we would’ve taken him deep twice in one inning.

Just had to get that off my chest.

Winds tend not to have high IQs.

The Mets are now 37 games over .500 and as you say, have 29 left. We speculated it was going to take over 100 wins to take the NL East and that appears to be accurate.

The Mets just need to win 15 of the 29 to get to 100. If they can win 20 of 29, if my calculations are correct, that gets them 11 games more over .500, or to 105 wins.

The Braves also have 29 games left. If the Mets get 105, the Braves would have to win 23 of 29 to catch them.

They are playing well but that would be a big ask. Those 3 games between the teams in the second last series of the year loom large.

Strider struck out 16, pitched 8 innings and threw 105 pitches. He has pitched 10 2/3 innings more this year than he has ever pitched. Kind of surprising the Braves are continuing to use him so much and if anything, are expanding his pitch counts late in the year. This violates commonly held beliefs over how pitchers should be managed and in theory, makes a major arm injury likely.

It will be interesting to see how he holds up down the stretch and into the playoffs. He seems to be doing really well so far.

Props to Atlanta for their ability to produce quality young players. Their roster is loaded with them. The Mets now have none.

Hey! We clinched a winning record! (I think.)

I'm glad SU won big tonight because the Mets sucked.

Can't we have SU and the Mets do well at the same time? :(

There's no 'easy part of the schedule' in September.
