2022 Mets thread

Perfect time to run off 7 straight in this home stand and let Max take his time to be ready for post season play. Hoping by then the Brewers are out of the WC and fold like a cheap suit to get a couple wins there then it's the hapless A's. Keep pressure on Atlanta to keep pace.
Lookie lookie... Mets 1.5 games up

Encouraging to bounce back after the Friday loss with 2 big wins over the weekend. Carrasco and Walker both have been struggling and pitched well.

We have Bassitt and DeGrom to start the Cubs series. I believe Keith said Trevor is slotted to start on Wednesday.

Then we play the Pirates in a 4 game series. I think Peterson is pencilled in as the starter for Thursday. Max is tentatively set as the starter for Friday. Then Carrasco and Walker over the weekend.

Then we have 3 games against the Brewers and a much needed day off. I assume if all goes to plan, we will see Bassitt, deGrom and either Walker or more likely Peterson.

Diaz has barely pitched in the last 2 weeks. Not many close games where we have a lead. It is good he is well rested but I hope he is still good to go when we need him. We will need him a lot down the stretch.

McNeil just might lead the league in hitting. That would be cool.

Yeah, I thought Goldschmidt was running away with the batting race but he's cooled off and Freeman is on top right now. But he could have a slump, too. Jeff seems to have been hitting .320 all year. He keeps the train moving better than anybody. He's lost power but I think he's a better player this way.

At this point in the season, I’m counting each Braves loss as a win for the Mets. Let those games fall off the schedule and make our way to the end one game at a time.

When the Braves lose, I just say...

and the 'easy part of the schedule' continues...

The problem with “easy” schedules in September is that there is no pressure on these other teams. Their seasons are over in three weeks and they know it. It’s so much easier to play when you don’t care about losing. The pressure on the Mets to win the division is enormous. They are playing incredibly tight against guys who have zero pressure. I’d actually prefer the “easy” part to be earlier in the season when these teams are actually still in it mathematically.

Bad loss last night. The awful call by the home plate umpire on the bunt where the runner ran in the grass and the ball hit him was big but the way we are playing, we wouldn’t have scored enough anyway.

How many HRs have we just missed in the last month that went just foul? Seems like the other team’s go fair and ours miss just about every time.

Peterson is apparently pitching today. We need a good effort from him.

Alvarez hit a HR for Syracuse last night. So did Dom Smith. But Megill was bombed in what I think was supposed to be his last tuneup before getting called up. That is disturbing. Hope he is okay.

Drew Smith pitched an inning for Syracuse as well and was good,

I turn on the game in the bottom of the 1st and it’s 6-0 Cubs. What has happened to the Mets? They look like a minor league team.

Also a team like Cubs called up some kids who busting it

Report from NBT Bank Stadium:

Max Scherzer looked fine. He really fires that ball with a quick motion. Some pitchers have a slow, smooth, rolling motion. Max is a howitzer. He pitched 3.2 innings only coming out because of a pitch count, (he threw 59). Of the 11 outs he got, 7 were strike-out, mostly on swinging strikes. His highest velocity was in the mid-90's, which was normal for him. He gave up a home run with nobody on. It looked like a fly-out to right field but just caried and carried. Kalil Lee leapt for it but it was just out of his reach. (Lee made a couple of great sliding catches later in the game. Too bad that he's hitting .211). Max gave up two singles, a line drive to center and a blooper to left and walked a guy. If he feels OK, I would assume that he'll make his next start for the big Mets and again go for win #200.

Alvarez was 0 for 3 and is now batting .179. He walked and was hit by a pitch on the wrist. he was in considerable pain for a time but stayed in the game. Still, he flexed the wrist several times after that, and I hope there wasn't something worse than they realized about it. He goes deep in the count and his OBP is almost double his batting average but when he swings, he's trying to put the lights out and his bat winds up pointing at the umpire's left foot, (he's a right-handed hitter). I saw him almost pick off a guy at first throwing from his knees. He also tried that to second, but the ball bounced past the second baseman into center field. The centerfielder bobbled it, then thew the guy out trying to score. it was a 'strike 'em out, throw 'em out from center field double play.

The home run Scherzer gave up held up until the SMets tied it up in the 8th inning but we gave up a run, (the 'free' runner), in the top of the tenth. We had the tying run on third and the winner on first with two out when Dom Smith looked at a third strike and pounded the ground with his bat in frustration.

The crowd was actually small, probably due to the late announcement that Scherzer would be pitching. the evening was comfortable of the most part but in the late innings a cool northwest wind made its presence felt. I love having September baseball in Syracuse but you need to bring a jacket.

Fixed!

Great time of the year to be at the ballpark, it's too bad that they can't draw flies this month (though some would argue that's one more appealing feature).

Two Mets starters in that series 'screwed the pooch'. it's amazing that the Mets have done as well as they have with all the injuries to their starting pitchers: DeGrom out for more than half the season, McGill out for virtually the whole season, Scherzer on the IL twice, Carrasco the same and Walker missing a couple of starts.

But the big issue is still the offense: "It’s the downside of an offense that relies on wearing a pitcher down and stringing together hits. It’s fun to watch for the Mets when it works, but how sustainable or plausible it is come October is a fair question." I've made this comparison before: they are like a football team that has to use 10 play drives to score. A sack, a holding penalty, a first down run that gets stuffed, a dropped pass can get the train off schedule. A team that can get explosive plays can overcome its mistakes, great plays by the other team and bad luck and score anyway.

Gary Cohen also noted that the Mets have the best record in the majors in winning games when they score first. It makes a difference, especially with the supposedly 'bad' teams they are playing now, if they can jump on a starter and get into the other team's bullpen. Then you can get some one-sided wins, as the Mets have done in recent games. But if he Mets' pitcher gets knocked out of the box early, the bad team's starter gets to stay in the game longer and it gets harder to come back.

A nice game tonight and our lead is now a full game.

But it looked a lot like these games:

...none of which meant that our problems were over.
