2022 Mets thread

David Stearns of the Brewers is the guy we want. He’s young (36), brilliant, from New York, grew up a Mets fan, and is probably the best GM in MLB.

His contract with the Brewers runs through 2023, but my understanding is, he can leave immediately if the Brewers make it to the NLCS this year.

Good win today. Jake was amazing. Since his return, the one thing I see that is different now is that when he gets to around 85 or 90 pitches, the quality of his stuff deteriorates quickly. Buck probably left him in too late in the sixth (he struck out 13, which is great, but it took a lot of pitches to make that happen).

Anyway, great to get a 4 game sweep of the Pirates. The Braves beat the Phillies again so the lead remains one game.

The Mets now travel to Milwaukee to play a 3 game series with the Brewers. We have Max returning for the game on Monday (against Burnes, this should be a pitcher’s dual), then Carrasco and Walker.

Thursday is a much needed day off, then we play a 3 game series against Oakland in Oakland, Looks like we will pitch Bassitt on Friday night (against his old team), then deGrom and Scherzer. That is a pretty good set of pitchers to be starting.

All 3 will have an extra day of rest.

Besides Max, I believe we have Tylor Megill returning to the Mets from the IL on Monday. And Drew Smith is expected back on Tuesday.

Our bullpen suddenly looks pretty deep.

Starling Marte remains out but should return by the end of this week.

Let’s hope everyone can stay healthy for a few weeks until the season is over.

Down in Syracuse, Francisco Alvarez hit a 3 run HE in the first inning, got another hit and is finally up to .200. He is going to be a good one.

Third different trip to California coming up. Not sure why the A’s series couldn’t be fit into one of the two previous trips. Milwaukee and Oakland is one of the stranger road trips I’ve seen.

What a gem last night for Scherzer. Obviously the right call to take him out after 6, but still frustrating to see Megill come in and give up that first hit immediately. Hopefully he can settle in to a reliever role in the next few weeks.

Happy for the team to clinch a playoff spot. Happy Scherzer pitched lights out for his 200th. Just wish those damn Braves would lose a couple freaking games. Seems like every time we have a streak, they do, too.

This team is extremely fun to watch. Looking forward to the next few weeks immensely.

LFGM!

At this point they need to be focused on going into the post season playing their best baseball. It's time to bury the Brewers then the A's and force Atlanta to keep pace. The Nats have been playing better baseball since they shocked us so maybe they can steal one. Also after this series the Braves play 10 of their last 13 on the road, minus the 3 vs the Mets in Atlanta.

That freaking series with the Cubbies man... we would be on an 8 game streak

We are leading the season series 9-7 vs the Braves. Getting a 10th win against them would be huge as it would give us the tiebreaker if we both finish with the same record. Remember there are no tiebreaker games this year due to the new playoff format.

My Braves lost the last game of the series AGAIN. Really blew this one with a baserunning blunder in the 8th. Unless the Mets have a huge comeback, it won't cost us. It looks like Sept 30 - Oct 2 might decide it.

Agree that late series is going to decide things. It is a shame Strider got hurt. Lat injuries for pitchers are tough to recover from. Ask Max. I hope this doesn’t end his season.

No shame in taking two out of three from the Brewers but rarely do the Braves lose to inferior competition. Would have loved to go up by 2 games but oh well. Hate rooting for the Phillies but will be pulling for them tomorrow on a Mets off day. 11 more to go.

I think you confused Olerud with Ventura that year, but your point still stands.

Alfonzo was one of my favorites. Just so consistent.

Yeah, Fonzie remains my single favorite Met of all-time.

*Oh, and somehow I missed Ventura there. So it was 2-3-4-5 in the order (if I remember correctly, which I probably don't) driving in between 102 and 124 runs that season. Crazy.

A discussion of the Mets' relief pitchers:

2.5 game lead with 10 to play. Gives us a little bit of breathing room. Hoping the Phillies keep it up and deGrom and Scherzer deliver this weekend. Would love to go into Atlanta guaranteed to still be in first after that series.

Magic number down to 9. 2 games ahead in the loss column.

The Mets are 41-31 against teams above .500 this year. The Braves are 31-34. New York’s ability to beat good teams most of the time is the key reason they remain in front. Only the Yankees have more wins over team above .500 and they are only 47-40.

I hope he heals quickly and is able to call playoff games. Is SNY even allowed to cover playoff games?

In the clip Gary Cohen says that Keith hopes to be back for the playoffs.

I don't think there is any local tv coverage of the playoffs, although I could be wrong. At least we didn't get any in Kansas City when the Royals made it several years ago.

On another note, looks like the division is the Mets and they've earned it. Hopefully both teams will get healthy for the playoffs although I'm concerned about Strider and Acuna for the Braves.

I think you are right. Don’t remember the Mets team doing games the last couple of times they made the playoffs.

Still think the NL East race is open. The Mets have had bigger leads and blown them.

It is a shame the Mets and Braves are in the same division. To me, there are 4 really good teams in MLB this year, and 2 are in the NL East (the other two are the Dodgers and Astros).

But maybe all the great competition between the Mets and Braves has made each team better.

I expect to see the teams match up in the playoffs down the road.

Not watching this one today but what's up with deGrom?
He had no control. Slider didn’t slide. Could not get his slower stuff over. Walked a lot of guys and was behind in the count a lot. Angel Hernandez is the home plate ump and helped out with a number of missed strike calls.

He looked healthy and was throwing hard.

Hopefully just a bad day.

In one of his starts, the ump just clearly wasn't up to DeGrom's level of stuff. Did he have a game at Citi where he was opposed by Strider? I think it was that game because Strider got squeezed too.

One thing about DeGrom is that his fastball has looked pretty flat. I've found that suprising. I guess when you're clocking 100 you don't need a lot of movement, but when he is a little off, his fastball seems drivable.

Maybe Keith's got a network gig for the playoffs.
