2022 Mets thread

Almost as if to tease us, the Braves get shutout by the Marlins 4-0 tonight. Mets are scheduled for a double header tomorrow but forecast is shaky so who knows if they get two in. If the Braves lose again tomorrow, Wednesday will be interesting.

... even if it's mostly over.

Props to the Braves. They played really well for a really long time and deserved to win. Made some great swings on some tough pitches and took advantage of mistakes well.

Alvarez was not ready for prime time.

Let's hope he does better against the Nationals pitching staff, which is more along the lines of what he has been facing in AAA.

Mets prospects getting their feet wet this year:

Kalil Lee 1 for 2 with a home run
Nick Plummer 4 for 29 with 2 homers
Bret Baty 7 for 38 with 2 HR
Mark Vientos 4 for 30 with a HR
Francisco Alvarez 0 for 8
Total: 16 for 99 with 6HR. They had 8 walks and 34 strike outs.

It's not unusual for a rookie to be overmatched the first time he sees big league pitching. Sometimes the get off to hot starts and really spark their team, (Greg Jefferies, Michael Conforto and others come to mind). Then you have to see what happens when the league gets a book on them. The SMets guys just, weren't in Jim Boeheim's words, "ready to help us" this year.

The Braves won and clinched the divisional title, although we could still tie them by sweeping this double-header, winning tomorrow while Alcantara beats the Braves. We could still rightly claim we tied for the title, but the Braves got to skip that first round by virtue of the tiebreaker.

Meanwhile Francisco Alvarez got his first big league hit - and it went 439 feet.

Alcantara is done for the year. But not sure who is pitching for either team,

Might have lost the division but proud of the Mets overall. They won 100 games for the first time in as long as I can remember. The Braves played over .700 ball since June 1st. To possibly lose by a game or tie is nothing to be ashamed of. Hopefully the series this past weekend has lit a fire under them and they play with a vengeance starting Friday. Would love nothing more than to dispatch the Padres and Dodgers and get another crack at the Braves in the NLCS. LGM!

Aren’t you not too far from Cardinals country? I assume you are rooting against them in the wildcard round. They always seem to catch lightning in a bottle once they hit the postseason.

I'm in the Kansas City area so on the other side of the state, but still pretty close in the big picture. I agree- my preference would be the Phillies. But anything can happen against any team in a short series so nothing will be easy at this point.

23-27. Then 78-34 the rest of the way. That is just a crazy turnaround by Atlanta.

I hereby declare, with the powers vested in me, (by the fact that I am the guy typing this), the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, who both have records of 101 wins and 61 losses, are co-champions of the National League's Eastern Division. The Braves will have the inside track in the playoffs by virtue of winning the season's series from the Mets, 10-9 but 101-61 = 101-61.

The 101 wins are the second most in Mets history to the 108 wins by the 1986 Mets, although the 1988 Mets went 100-60, (there being no need to make up the two rainouts, since they won the pennant by 15 games). The 1969 Mets were 100-62.

Most of the experts are picking the Mets to beat the Padres. For some reason, that does not make me feel better about our chances.

Fascinating decision for the Mets regarding their pitching rotation for the Padres.

If they go with Scherzer and de Grom in the Padres series, it means they will only be available to face the Dodgers once (barring rain outs or pitchers going on short rest).

Sounds like we are definitely pitching Max in the Padres series opener. Probably going with Bassitt in game 2 and hoping like hell we win both so Jake can open the Dodger series and pitch twice against them.

But if we lose game 1, Jake will start game 2 given it is a most win game.

We finally know why Jake struggled down the stretch. He has been experiencing blister problems. The Mets would love to rest him for as long as possible; jyet another reason they would like to avoid using him against the Padres if at all possible.

If the Mets keep Ruf on the roster and do not keep Alvarez, I will be very unhappy. Ruf is awful. Look at his WAR. I don't care if he was good once, he is awful now.

I’m actually happier with Scherzer going tonight instead of deGrom. Scherzer has that aggressive “it” factor. Guy wants to win and you can tell. Not saying deGrom doesn’t want to win. Just like Scherzer’s passion better.

Agree. Hoping Max is able to rise to the occasion. As he has so many times in the past...

He can overthrow a lot in these games, having seen it first hand.

Hope he smokes em tonight though.

"Total WAR" I like it!

(But did we really win four more games this year with Pete Alonso than we would have with an average first baseman?)

DeGrom wants to blow you away. Scherzer wants to win.

At different times the other night Francisco was described as having the 'it' factor and "getting it". He has it and he gets it.

Not an average first baseman, an average replacement first baseman.

What is the difference, statistically? I remember that when he came up, Pete replaced 9 different guys who had hit 16 homers and he hit 53.

Replacement level is far below league average. Here is an explanation I linked to in another thread if you are interested.

Replacement Level

We get our NL kryptonite in the Wild Card and it starts true to form. That heart break gut feeling is running wild.

It looks like another night where one of our aces "doesn't have his best stuff".

So Pete, who tied for the major league lead in RBIs, enabled the Mets to win 4 more games than they would if they had a worse than average first baseman? They would have won 97 without Pete?
