2023 Transfer Thread

Surprised Duke isn't on your list. They would have a need since they lose Montgomery (of course everyone "needs" a player like Handley). I thought I read somewhere that Duke has a special post grad program that is very appealing to most lacrosse players, a big reason why they land so many fifth years. I guess I don't see Maryland in the equation but they have a starting defender from Oregon so maybe he can vouch for the program.

For the Ivy players the last few years have been very topsy-tuvry with decisions about the season coming down at the last minute. This year at least they've had time to make plans about what they want to do. Madronic and the Dartmouth players I beleive have been in the portal for a while now.
I wouldn't presume to know where Handley is going, but Donville is from an Ivy League school.

With what Maryland has returning, they probably wouldn't contend for the title, but you add in a top offensive transfer or two, like Handley, and Maryland would be right back in the running. So a player might choose to come to Maryland to contend for a title.

Interesting that this tweet doesn't outright say he's going back to Lehigh. Just that he's using his last year of eligibility.

Obviously Syracuse will be pretty desperate for a FOGO in the portal next year. The good news/bad news is that not too many teams that are attractive to fifth years "need" a fogo. The following ACC/Big 10 teams, plus Denver and Georgetown look pretty set at FOGO:

UVA: I think LaSalla is coming back for his fifth year. They get a top freshman in Mac Eldridge as well.
UNC: Still should have Tucci (would be a fifth year) and Tyeyar
Notre Dame: Will Lynch will only be a sophomore
Duke: Naso would only be a junior
Hopkins: Would have Nawreski available as a fifth year, also have a promising freshman in Callahan
Michigan: Would have Rowlett back for a fifth year and Weinfieldt would be a junior (both are over 50%).
Maryland: Wierman would be a senior.
Denver: Stathkis is back for his senior year.
Georgetown: The big wild card, James Reilly is apparently in the portal but I still think he goes back.

The teams Syracuse will most likely be competing with for a FOGO are Ohio State who I beleive losses Inacio, Penn State who is under 50% right now and Rutgers whose main guy is just at 50%. I'm probably missing a few teams here but that's all I can think of for now.

I'm excluded Ivy League teams and Patriot League teams since I don't think those teams typically can accommodate 5th years. I may be wrong about that. Of course a number of FOGOs might have multiple years of eligibility like Chase Mullins who left UNC.

Also it should go unsaid but a lot could change. A player with fifth year eligibility decides he's done, or wants to go to a different school could open up a spot unexpectedly. Also a more than a few players who are their teams number two will probably enter the portal looking for a starting job elsewhere. A lot like the carousel we see in college football when it comes to quarterbacks.

Anyways, just something that has been on my mind. I'm sure if Sisselberg does enter the portal, he'll have his pick of schools. Notre Dame accommodated Kyle Gallagher even though they already had Charlie Leonard on the roster last year. TD Irelan joined Denver when they had Stathkis. But at the very least Syracuse should be strongly positioned to offer a top player a very easy path to lots of face-off reps. That has to be a good selling point.

Sisselberger and Syracuse might actually be a good academic fit as well

That said, I don't think any of these teams already having good FOGOs will prevent them from going after Sisselberger. If you have a chance to land the top guy at his position you generally take it. I'm not sure there's a school on that list that'd turn him down if he said he wanted to come aboard. Especially in this era where you ideally want at least two capable FOGOs anyway.

Good academic fit? What are you basing that on? He’s a dean’s list student now. He would have his pick of the ACC if he transfers.

A poster over at FanLax updated their list of players currently in the Transfer Portal. There were/are some names that stood out to me. I'm probably missing others, but these names drew my attention.

Darien Cook - Attack - Brown: Second on the team with 37 points (21g, 16a).
Brian Minicus - Attack - Colgate: Leads team in points with 49 points (31g, 18a). Brother will be a freshman at Loyola next year.
Peter Rizzoti - LSM - Dartmouth: 24 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. Rumors on FL say he's headed to Rutgers.
Daniel Hicks - Goalie - Dartmouth: 54% save percentage, 11.9 GAA.
Dylan Watson - Attack - Georgetown: Leads team in scoring with 50 points (46g, 4a).
James Reilly - FO - Georgetown: 64% face-off percentage. I have a feeling that both he and Watson will be back, probably depends on what they want for grad school.
Austin Madronic - Attack - Harvard: Second on team with 34 points (22g, 12 a)
Derrek Maddona - Midfield - Hobart: Fifth on team in scoring with 16 points (15g, 1a).
Chris Conlin - Defense - Holy Cross: 50 groundballs and 35 caused turnovers. Rumors on FL indicate he is headed to Notre Dame.
Mo Silah - LSM - Towson: 22 groundballs and 14 caused turnovers
Joe Neumann - FO - Yale: 47% winning percentage, but was number one ranked FOGO recruit his senior year of high school.

Syracuse is in an interesting spot in regards to the transfer market. They have one of, if not the top recruiting class coming in and will obviously want to give their talented freshmen playing time next year. But this is still a team that will in all likelihood will finish the season with just four wins. Help is needed pretty much all over the roster. Gait largely stayed away from the transfer market last year with the exception of Nick Fraterrgio, and post fall ball, Bobby Gavin. More players will obviously enter the portal after the season, and some may already have deals lined up with teams and not even enter the portal (Notre Dame did this last season).

I think Syracuse would benefit from landing any player on the above list, but they need to weigh the benefits of taking in a one and done player over a freshman or younger player they see promise in. Face-off needs to be the priority, but outside of Reilly, who I have to imagine will end up back at Gtown, the pickings are slim so far. Syracuse could really use a goalie upgrade. Midfield could also really stand to be boosted, but outside of Maddona there's not much. Of course they could land an attackman and move them to midfield as well. How aggressive will Gait be here? I can't see him doing a total Rutgers makeover, but to me he really needs to supplement the talent coming in. Plus with the fifth year exception, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to pick up players that in normal years you'd have no chance of landing.

The elephant in the room is of course how many more Ivy League players join the portal. Sam Handley is the big name to keep an eye on, as he's a senior and I beleive can't go back to Penn. The poster who updated the list was clear to point out that Handley is not in the portal as of now. He's also not discussed as being a PLL draft possibility so I imagine that he will be playing NCAA lacrosse somewhere next year. If he does enter the portal every team is going to be after him. The one angle Syracuse could have is he and Dordevic are close and grew up together playing lacrosse. It would be a tough sell coming off a losing season, but he would solve a lot of problems for SU. Something to keep an eye on.

The more Ivy League players that go into the portal, the better it is for the Dukes and Notre Dames I would think.

I wonder where the freshman FOGO who apparently left UNC recently is looking to go? Can't recall his name now but believe he was a pretty highly ranked recruit? Hope Syracuse is reaching out to him.

Chase Mullins. 19th ranked recruit last year and a five star. Syracuse's, and other team's interest probably depends a lot on why Mullins left UNC midseason.

Jack Schirtzer recently left the Terps. He was a fairly highly touted defenseman recruit from Long Island. Supposedly, he hurt is knee playing from IMG last spring. He hasn't played much for the Terps this spring. I'd be guessing that he was looking close to home, but one never knows for sure.

Nicky Solomon in the portal. Don't think he can play midfield or id say keep an eye on that one.

This is nuts. Are there any Maltz left with eligibility?

Daniel Maltz hasn’t played much for Maryland this year after starting most of last year. Unless it’s injury related I wonder if he decides to move on. I imagine SU would be last on his list FWIW.

It feels like SU and UNC will be in a relegation battle next year for the bottom of the ACC. Both teams bring in good recruiting classes but will be very very young.

Wow, UNC not in a good place. I'm starting to wonder about Breschi's contract. I believe he has 1 year left on his deal. Very curious to see if he gets an extension.

All things considered I would feel worse if I was a UNC fan today.

Because two seniors are transferring for their grad year? Could be for academic reasons. Could be that 5 years is a long time to spend in one place. You have no idea.

According to FanLax both Chris Fake and Brian Tevlin from Yale are in the portal. Someone said Fake was a Cuse commit at one point but I don’t remember that? Also confirmed Savage.

It is interesting that so many UNC players decide not to use their fifth year at UNC. Will Bowen, Brian Christopher, Alex Trippi, now Solomon and Kelly.

I guess I’m not sure how big a loss Solomon or Kelly are to be honest. They combined for 40 goals but also had one of the best quarterbacks in the last 10 years distributing to them so you’d think they would produce more. Also Kelly was moved to midfield at the end of the season (he did do damage to Syracuse of course). Curious where they end up.

UNC was one goal away from the finals last year (to the eventual champ). I think Breschi is okay.

I don't remember that either, would be a nice one-year replacement for Brett but seems unlikely

We never had a commit thread on Fake.
