2024 Holiday Bowl- Syracuse vs. Washington State December 27th, 8pm ET

Exactly. Gator maybe has some better things going but Thursday the day after New Years kind've sucks.
San Diego>
Thing is, these bowls DO MATTER for the fans and they may be more important than anything else in this day and age.

The bowl games are used as major fundraising pushes with events before etc.

Unfortunately with the game timing, the team will be spending Christmas out in San Diego. Away from many of their families because we are an East Coast team.

It also means much less of those East coast fans for fundraising.

The west coast certainly has alums but they’ve been tapped into twice this season already.

I can’t imagine that Syracuse is fully thrilled with this bowl destination.

While a higher end bowl, it is coming at a cost for the football team.

Again, it’s great for the program and the players but there are some drawbacks to us being in the Holiday bowl
your overthinking it. It’s a bowl game the donors will be fine.

Hodads is worth the trip alone to have that burger. And im not kidding lol. People that are 50/50 on going should absolutely go. San Diego is incredible
The original Hodads in Ocean Beach (OB) is the one to go to. It’s got a cool hippie vibe, then go north to Mission Beach/Pacific Beach (PB). San Diego has so many activities during the holidays, but I’m just so bummed they don’t have a match up against a marquee team like Colorado

Got my tickets. Got the email from the school. Better price on stub hub on the su side. Got around the 30 lower level 11 rows up. Let me know if anyone is considering relegating. Parking passes $32.

You’re not in touch if you don’t understand the fundraising that occurs before a bowl game.

Also, we weren’t in contention for the Fenway bowl so that argument doesn’t even make sense.
I guess I’m not following why it’s bad to have a third “west coast” game because west coast donors may be tapped out, when our east coast donors have had 10 games in this time zone already?

Maybe I’m not in touch, but it just seems strange to me. Why do we need to hit people up at a bowl game? There’s dozens of other times during a year SU can hit up potential donors. Like there would have been a massive haul if we played in Charlotte or El Paso?

Oh which side is the Syracuse side? I need to wait a while to grab tickets, some friends have texted and are interested in going.

According to the email I got from the school looked like 109, 108, 107, 106, 105, 104 etc.

School has sections but it does not appear that they guarantee specific seats.

There wouldn’t have, that’s why we wanted to stay away from the Sun Bowl.

And while yes, the East coast has more games, it also has a larger base to pull from.

An East coast game in Florida or Charlotte would have brought in way more fans. More fans is more dollars. More fans attending pre parties etc. more dinners with John Wildhack for the higher donors etc.

That’s more of a chance to get more $$ for NIL and for CAF.

While going to San Diego, as I stated, is great for the program (holiday bowl is a big name) and for the players (a warm destination) it results in far less fans.

I’m sure if you asked ADJW he would have much preferred Pop Tarts, Gator or Mayo bowl

There a large contingent of fans on the west coast. Will a lot show? We will have to see with UNLV and Cal already. If it had been su first trip out west feel there would be more fans.

It has (almost) nothing to do with donors.

It does have to do with fans.
And alumni.
And players’ families.
And croots.

And SD is a distant 3rd behind the 2 FL bowls we were in play for, on every. single. metric.

  • We have basically zero alumni in SD.
  • We have nearly zero recruiting in SD.
  • We have no players from SD, so no player families & friends & former teammates and classmates who can easily attend the game.
  • Flights from NY metro area & Cuse are few and very expensive, vs FL which has ooodles of cheap direct flights from all over the Northeast.
  • Hotels in SD are on the spendy side compared to FL.
  • WAZZOU is a zero-buzz, no name, no conference opponent who limped into the end of the season, played almost nobody, and beat nobody. vs
  • Our FL bowls opponent would be a name from a P4 conference, and also with a # after their name. In a hotbed recruiting area, where we also have a ton of alumni.
  • McCord & others likely play vs a name opponent. I’d imagine most if not all Seniors / NFL aspirants will sit this game out.
  • The field At Snapdragon Stadium is apparently awful. Huge injury risk for those who do play. Hence more opt-outs.

San Diego is a lovely city, in spite of being named after a whale’s vagina.

But it’s a distant 3rd of the 3 bowls we were in contention for,
And the Cougars are a negative buzz opponent.
And it’s hard & expense to get there and stay there.

I guess we’ll see. I feel like we’re in a new era of bowl games. I don’t think a school like SU is going to see a ton of people travel given the opt outs, the attractive regular season away trips, the constant hand out for donations during the rest of the year, etc.

Orlando was literally the best I’ve ever seen an SU bowl turnout, and that feels like a lifetime ago given the changes to the CFB landscape since then.

I don’t think any school not in the playoffs should count on turnouts like the old days, no matter where the team is playing.

Right I get all of that. I was asking specifically about donors and some kind of massive fundraising loss that was being alluded to.

But we’re also in a cross coastal conference now. West coast games are a fact of life.

Exactly.

I know myself and several others that would have gone to this game, IF we hadn’t been out there at least once if not twice already

If you have less of all that he’s talking about there…..you have WAY less $$$$$ being donated to the program

How much money does SU make from donors at a bowl game? Like, what did we do at the Pinstripe a couple years ago?

By the way, all of this donor talk makes me (a) think of John Mulaney’s stand up about giving to your college, and (b) makes me like pro sports more and more.
