2024 New York Mets Thread

We get a somewhat dubious "can't overturn" call at third. Kelenic has a brain freeze on a squeeze play and Laureano overruns, (how often do you see that?) McNeil's tall can of corn to right and we win, despite Sale. Life is good.
I didn't think that call was dubious at all. Didn't look like there was enough to overturn to me, even as a Braves fan.

Agree, there was an angle they showed late during the review from behind that appeared to show Vientos got the tag on in time. Great throw by Alvarez might hvae saved the game. The Met pitchers have to do a better job holding the runners close. Diaz completely ignored the runner and the Braves (almost) took advantage.

The Mets finished the game with 3 hits. They did not get a runner in scoring position until the 10th inning and only got one there then because everyone automatically gets a runner in scoring position to start the 10th inning and beyond. Sale was really impressive.

I have to say though that the way he delivers the ball almost ensures he is going to have another severe arm injury. It hurt me to watch the way he throws across his body like he does.

The Mets burned 3 of their best relievers last night, which means we really need the starting pitcher to do deep into the game tonight. Even at his best, Senga tends to do deep in counts a lot and rarely gets into the seventh inning. Given how he looked pitching in Syracuse on Saturday, I think it would be a minor miracle if a) he pitches well and b) he gets through the fifth inning.

I would think the Mets are going to have to come up with a way to cover at least 4 innings after Senga leaves. Would guess Nunez is going to be reserved to cover a couple, at least if the Mets are still in the game.

Would expect to see all three lefty relievers pitch an inning and either Houser or Nunez. Nunez might only pitch if it is close. If so, he might pitch a couple innings.

Hopefully at least one of the banged up outfielders can play tonight. The versatility of McNeil is really helpful in situations like this.

The Mets made a bunch of moves today.

Dedniel Nunez goes on the IL, which is a major loss for a bullpen with a lot of people already out. Eric Orze was called up to replace him.

Eric has a good fastball and a really good spin rate on his curve but has not been able to fully realize his potential to date. The stat nerds love his spin numbers though.

Segna gets activated and Houser gets DFAed.

Without Nunez and Houser, there are slim pickings left in the bullpen. Orze, Diekman, Ottavino and the two lefties named Young. Maybe Maton can pitch two days in a row. Can't imagine Diaz can.

Diekman will probably be the closer again.

I hope the Mets score a lot of runs tonight.

Ugh. I hate it when all your injuries seem to be to the same unit.

Reid-Foley and Reed can't get back soon enough.

Senga pitched well, (2 runs, 9K's in 5 1/3) but left the game with a "left calf strain".

Meanwhile the Mets picked up this guy from the Mariners:

Orze gave up a home run but then got 5 outs.

In consecutive years, the Mets have been without their ace reliever and then their ace starter. :(:(

"On Wednesday, in discussing how his bullpen plans shift moment to moment over a nine-inning game, Carlos Mendoza chuckled at the idea of forming a pregame plan and sticking to it."

"Former Met Michael Conforto and the $6 million he’s owed this season should also be attainable without giving up too much prospect capital."

"Five years ago, Jesse Winker irritated Mets fans writ large when he waved at a few of them gathered along the left-field line after sliding to make a game-ending catch. Now, after a half-decade as a minor antagonist at Citi Field, Winker will wave hello. And those fans will be happy to have him, especially if Winker can keep pounding right-handed pitchers."

Can we petition the Commissioner to allow the Mets to use some of these runs in the last two games of the Braves series? (Or maybe the next two games of the Twins series?)

And why pitch Butto for 3 innings in this game?

Butto went 3 innings because the Mets are ‘stretching him out’ to prepare him for a possible return to the starting rotation.

Starting pitchers are in great demand right now and I think the Mets are probably going to add another reliever instead and have Jose move into the rotation instead.

Pete has homers two games in a row. Could he finally be going on one of his hot streaks? This would be a good time for that…..

"The case for standing pat
Admittedly, this is the hardest case to make. The Mets should continue to add. But prices remained high through Monday night because the market is light on sellers. There are barely any rental starters left."

I hope that the Mets add a reliever for someone in the 25th best prospect in the system range. Maybe two. And move Butto to the rotation.

That is the logical move here and David Stearns appears to be a logical guy.

I have no doubt Pete Alonso has worked hard to become a good defensive player.

In some ways, he is better. He fields grounders reasonably well. He sometimes now catches bounced throws to him.

But man, he is not good at throwing the ball. And just like with his hitting, he is at his worst in clutch situations.

Phil Maton – A+

Josh Walker for a warm body – A+

Huascar Brazoban – A

Ryne Stanek - B+

Jesse Winker – B

Tyler Zuber – B-

Paul Blackburn – C

Huascar Brazoban could be an A++++ for what they gave up

From 'Baseball Trade Values' on X

"Today the #Mets reportedly acquired RHP Huascar Brazoban ($8.3M surplus trade value) from the #Marlins in exchange for UT Wilfredo Lara ($0.5M).

The deal is barely accepted by our model, but as a major underpay by New York."

"Blackburn gives the Mets some length in their rotation, which is more important now that it’s clear Kodai Senga is out for the year, although it’s more about giving the better starters some extra time rather than bolstering the playoff rotation...

The other starter they got is right-hander Kade Morris, from the Mets, who was a third-round pick in 2023 from Nevada-Reno. He has pitched well in Low and High A this year but probably should have started at High A and moved to Double A given his collegiate experience. He’s a sinker/slider guy who gets a lot of groundballs and pop-ups, with solid-average control. He’s probably a fifth starter now who could be a fourth starter if he improves his fringy changeup."

"A wise fellow once said that you can never have too much pitching. The Mets could use some more pitching. Blackburn is, in fact, a pitcher. "

Boring is good for pitchers. We look to our hitters for excitement.

"The only thing aggressive about the Mets’ activity at the trade deadline Tuesday was how much they leaned into making it nondescript. Paul Blackburn, Huascar Brazobán and Tyler Zuber — this was reaching into your drawer and pulling out a quarter zip. This was cleaning your plate of vegetables and saving the ice cream for next year."

"No, the restraint Stearns showed is one of the chief reasons he’s here in this job. The trade deadline is when you cut through the corporate speak and find out, via actions, what a front office really thinks about the team it’s constructed. And what Stearns told you, in his first deadline with the Mets, is that he thinks they’re, you know, pretty good."

"An option in the minor leagues for the Mets to consider is Max Kranick. Picked up on waivers this offseason from the Pittsburgh Pirates and a survivor of the waiver wire, he’s an optional ex-starter who has shifted to a bullpen role in Syracuse. Regularly used for 2 or more innings in relief this year, the kid from Scranton who grew up rooting for the Mets may finally have the wiggle room needed to pitch in the majors for his childhood team."

"Evaluators from rival teams applauded New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns for staying disciplined in a trade market lacking stars, though they described the club’s additions as merely minor improvements...But as one executive said, “In what was a sellers’ market, as a team trying to make the playoffs, you should take that price and be fine with it.”

After the dust has cleared, it is interesting to see how the pitching roster looks.

Right now there are 5 starting pitchers on the roster:

Blackburn
Quintana
Manaea
Peterson
Severino

They can either stick with this or stay with the plan to use a 6 man rotation by converting Butto back to a starter. That was primarily being driven by the arrival of Senga so who knows what they will do now.

We know Megill will not be staying in the rotation. He was demoted to Syracuse when Blackburn was added to the roster.

The relievers are currently

Diaz
Brazoban
Stanek
Maton
Ottavino
Young
Young

and Butto, who may or may not be a reliever right now.

It will be very interesting to see who gets the call to pitch the 7th and 8th innings these days. Guessing Stanek gets the 7th and Brazilian the 8th (assuming they are rested). But Maton will also surely be in the mix and maybe Ottavino will get added to the circle of trust soon as well.

Reid-Foley is close to finishing a rehab assignment and will probably be added to the roster soon. He will presumably replace one of the lefty Youngs.

Garrett Reed has just started a rehab assignment (he is about to join Syracuse), believe he started his rehab in Brooklyn). He will be presumably be added in about a week. That will drive a tough decision that will probably result in the Mets sending down the only lefty remaining in the bullpen. Or the release of Adam Ottavino. I think he is well liked and respected so releasing him would be tough.

And then there is Christian Scott, who is in the midst of a 2 week shutdown whereupon a decision will be made to shut him down for the year (and probably have Tommy John surgery) or to put him right back in the rotation, which would drive another tough decision (might end up sending Reid-Foley down).

Winker’s arrival drove the reassignment of DJ Stewart to Syracuse, which many Mets fans have been pining for. Speaking of Syracuse, Drew Gilbert is finally playing and just went 2-4 last night. They were unfortunately rained out tonight in Columbus.

"On Wednesday, the Mets optioned Zuber to Triple-A Syracuse, but New York expects him to be part of their bullpen depth. Stearns has demonstrated a knack for acquiring anonymous relievers and getting production from them — Jake Cousins and Justin Topa come to mind. "
He pitched for Syracuse Thursday, get rocked, blew the game and took the loss.

"Mauricio is still expected to get back on the field in the offseason and his rehab progression will depend on the tolerance of his knee, per the club. So for now, the Mets believe he is on the same track, despite undergoing an additional knee procedure."

It will be interesting to see where they put him when he's healthy.

I didn’t mention Nunez here. Last I knew he was expected to be activated after two weeks or so on the IL. If his injury is minor and he does return in a week or so, it will drive another tough decision.

Good problems to have.
