Why continue to work for a boss that limits your performance?
Been out looking for a job lately? I bet they are paid pretty well. And they have kids
that they don't want to have to pick up and start over somewhere else. And the school
is still their school. Pretty good reasons to stay.

Can anyone give a reason to hire Red other than that it’s because he’s “in the family”?

He’s the associate HC of a P5 program that has been a massive downward trajectory lately. We haven’t been recruiting well, we haven’t been playing well, we haven’t been developing players well. Nothing about Syracuse on the court right now is good. If we wanna blame JB 100% then sure, let’s absolve Red and give him a shot. But if JB hamstrings him that much? Why not leave?

Duke and UNC were different because of where the programs were when K and Roy. Neptune had a head coaching gig at Fordham before Nova took him.

Would any other P5 program hire Red right now?

To blame Red for the downturn is to ignore the management style of his boss.

Ahhhh, gotcha. Well we should look at assistants at Georgetown then because it’s not their fault that Ewing is clueless? Not a lot of P5 jobs are hiring assistants from schools who haven’t been good lately

From many accounts, they aren't allowed to help make many basketball decisions, but I see your point.

If I take a step back from my disappointment, they need to at the very, very, very least announce that next year is his final year. Even the biggest JB supporters should be able to see that all of the uncertainty makes no sense on any level.

Really?? You want to watch us go 10-22 next year? I mean, that's the kind of year we're looking at, if you bring him back and our 3 best players, and probably a couple others, leave. I mean, I know you are a great fan TPT, but that's insane to give him another year. We literally won't draw 10,000 people next year if he's back, and Judah leaves.

I don’t see it. After Hopkins laying an egg I don’t see a lot of excitement when talking about the jb coaching tree. He held on way too long and is taking everyone down with him.

I get it. I’m just saying it’s literally the very least they can do. “Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim’s last season”, come play for the hall of famer before he retires, blah blah blah.

Edit to add: the amount of NIL money that would likely flow for portal players in such a scenario might make us blush.

At least Hop got paid. He'll be able to get a high level assistant job easy. Red and Gerry are in a tough spot.

JB’s take on attendance is sad. We once averaged over 29,000 fans per game and over 27,000 per game five times. We have half that in the building this year. He tries to rationalize everything. His teams today play at a snails pace. The players on the floor today compared to teams over ten years ago are not close. JW can talk all he wants about game day atmosphere, but unless there’s talent and winning taking place, attendance is going to nosedive. I’m telling you right now, if Judah and Jesse are not back next year average attendance will drop well below 15,000. Just go to games and talk to people. Fans are frustrated and are finding other ways to spend their money. I sit in section 123 and I’ve never seen as many empty seats as I’ve seen this year.

Has anyone considered Boeheim was offered the job of head scouting director of the Mets and he’s trying to get fired? These inane comments make sense in that context.

I'd go to the Dome to see JB in a bodysuit.

We had 25,000+ to Midnight Madness the year of the NBA strike.

He really does seem fine watching everything burn.

The national attendance trends argument makes me seriously doubt some contributors actually go to games in person as much as would be thought.

SU has a decent win, in either basketball or football, and the next game’s attendance shoots up significantly.

We probably have one of the best butt in seats student rates in the country, but they’re kicked in the plums 75% within 5 minutes of the game starting with the on court product.

We had a very flawed football team selling out games pretty easily at any sign of exciting play.

Not just people. People that both you and I respect. Unlike Hop and Troy and Rob, he didn't have a coach that was a plus during the recruitment. Heck, the Head coach wasn't even around most summers.

The thing is, college basketball is a results-based profession. We can actually go back and look at who we landed [and go back even further, to when Red was at VT], and the players he brought in do not support the claim that he's anything more than a generally average recruiter. The tangible results suggest that he's okay, but nothing special.

To your point above, the past few years JB hasn't pounded the pavement, and that puts the ACs at a disadvantage. But this notion that everything will magically change on the recruiting trail if Red took over -- it's unsubstantiated, based upon long-term results.

Also -- "Red is a good recruiter" -- relative to what? I think that there's a tendency to overestimate our players / coaches capabilities here, because they're who we're familiar with, and we want them to be successful. But I don't think anyone in the profession views Red as a bulldog recruiting ace, either.

Again, not suggesting he's bad, not saying he's a liability -- just haven't seen that belief translate into tangible results. Seems more rooted in optimistic thinking than objectivity.

the remaining number of season ticket holders and attendence better than most teams is a legacy from better days. I would bet the number has decreased and i would bet that the number of fannys in the seats among those season ticket holders has slowly decreased over the past 5-10 years. It happens as performance lacks. As has been written on this site, there are many former die hard fans, like me, who used to set their clocks for when the next SU game was, but, now it has become an afterthought. The notice i got two days before the Duke Game offering some price incentive for game tickets would have never happened in the past
