Anyone hear this new stadium rumor

Honestly, it would not surprise me if this was all just political posturing

Yes you are correct, the Manufacturing plants are all gone and 7000 employees are now down to 1400 engineers on an 82 acre campus, great job Carrier, they should be commended as India benefits from the manufacturing. I don't go over to Carrier Circle anymore because there isn't much there. Most of the buildings are knocked down in favor of a green walking area, this is great for our local economy. Doesn't change the fact that their presence here is very small compared to what it used to be. UTC does not even show up in the top 10 employers in Onondaga County much less Upstate NY, as of 2012 they were # 12.

No, really, I think it's great that they design stuff here to be built overseas, 1400 jobs here, 8000 over there.

Dude, the point is that they are here. GE is not. GM is not. Chrysler/NVG /Magna is not. Where are their jobs? Not here. None of them. Celebrate the fact a fortune 50 company has a presence here.

The parallels between developing a logistical means of trafficking goods across the greatest industrial state in the union and building a place to watch football, basketball and motocross (when a perfectly acceptable and fully financed alternative already exist) are so staggering i can't believe i would speak out against such a project.

There has to be a reason the War Memorial is 100 years old, right?

Look (despite what some think), i'd love Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and even Albany to all achieve a great renaissance. I truly enjoyed my time in Syracuse and think the area has a lot to offer. All were once great cities and they deserve an honest shot to reclaim some of the old glory. I'd love SU to play in a state-of-the-art stadium, but its my opinion that this project will not come to fruition in the next 20 years. Sorry if that offends some.

I do agree with the poster that said if Cuomo wants it done, it will get done. Maybe CNY will have to rely upon a charge from those regional economics councils. I just dont see Cuomo having an interest in this type of project. He is not a fan of Miner (and vice versa). DeFrancisco sits across the able. I think Cuomo doesn't have much interest in anything nouth of Westchester/Rockland counties (except Nano technology which was really a Pataki/Bruno idea to begin with).

He sure does have an interest in the real Upstate NY, it's renaissance will be his crown jewel to getting him elected president of the United States. Why would he commit $1billion to Buffalo? If you think for a moment that he wouldn't latch himself onto a project to help fund a new facility for Syracuse University and the nationwide notoriety that would bring him, well then I'm afraid you're not able to see the big picture and not a student of how politics works.

I have lived here for 35 years. For the most part, Syracusans are reluctant to embrace change, oppose anything that sounds different, and will sabotage efforts by people who want progress.
This is the standard argument made by special interests who want to spend other peoples money. I'm all for change. You know what would be a change? Stadiums paid for by the people that use it

Not me. Compared to most here, I am a radical for change.
Understand. Was referring to the area's nattering nabobs of negativity with a no can do attitude.

GE didn't leave. They sold their defense business to Martin Marietta who then merged with Lockheed to make Lockheed Martin. They still employ about 1700.

they also sold their T.V. screens to Japan in the 80's. My mother and uncle lost their jobs while other relatives didn't. I remember you saying you knew my uncle who demonstrated his pump for you.

Lol. Yea I remember, when he worked in the defense group. But the fact is GE didn't abandon Syracuse. The numbers are much smaller but the largest part of the business is still here. Many folks have been here for 30 years.

Whatever. If there has to be a new stadium, I just want the arch back...

I like this post, but I'm curious to know what location could be chosen that would A) be easier access to the common folk, AND, B) be equally accessible to students who currently can simply just walk across campus.

You know what? We get maybe 3000 students for basketball, and probably 1000 per game for football. Personally, they can take the damn bus.

I haven't read this whole thread. Only through page 3. But one point I am not seeing, is that this would be as much for the City of Syracuse, and the State of NY as it is for SU. Right now the Dome is on campus and that limits it's use for non campus big type of events. I think they may be looking at this for major big events at times. The only reason it would not be for a final four or a big event like a national convention would be lack of hotels, which could come at a later time if this place took off. I would not rule out any type of event in the further future. But in the meantime, there are so many other type of events of a slightly smaller scale than a FF that could be held in Syracuse, bringing lots of money into the area. Major arenas switch events over all of the time. Often in one day. From basketball in the daytime to hockey at night.
As far as being slightly off campus, I remember when I visited Michigan with my son I thought the stadium was fairly far off campus. Most students need to bus there, or it is a good 30 minute walk. Not that I am going to compare our football attendance with Michigan, but students will get there if they want to. If a good entertainment center is developed around it, even more so. Then it becomes a whole activity with the game as part of it.
I think a stadium slightly off campus is also more friendly to the Syracuse community. Parking may be more convenient, etc.
Seriously don't underestimate your town. How about when Mall of American was built. Probably everyone thought building the largest mall in Minneapolis was crazy as opposed to building it in the NYC area, or LA area. Who was going to go there?

Yeah that's it, its in the area the Univ has been expanding towards for several years including the COE making it pretty close to campus. I have very mixed feelings about this given my love for the dome as many do but if it can have 44,444 for football and be taylor built so we can keep basketball capacity near 35000 with all around 3rd level seating and add a retractable roof I could see this being quite viable. I'm wondering if they will do large basketball arena one side of the football field small hockey arena in the other endzone for the crunch.

I'm thinking they need to move on this before the DOT finalizes its I81 plan so traffic and exits would be accounted for that may be why this is coming out now.

It's not a bad walk down the hill but it would sure suck ass going back to campus on a winter night. You'd need some sort of people mover.

Maybe one from the mall too or other satellite locations. Downtown stadiums surrounded by parking lots are fun for four/five days a year but otherwise dead zones.

The days of Heavy Metal Parking Lot are long over (but PRIEST STILL RULES).

Yes, but this would essentially be at the other end of the parking lot for Destiny. It would hardly be a wasteland, and COR has a mixed use site going in nearby. I think there's supposed to be another hotel coming to that location, probably in the style of the Marriott Extended Stay that just opened downtown in Armory Square this year.

Good call. Planning for Route 81 is also putting some time pressure on this.

Shuttle bus the students back to campus. Could be a dedicated line for them, just like connective corridor is right now. Run it through main campus, down Colvin and then out to South Campus. It's only moving a few thousand kids instead of 30,000+ townies.

Wow...talk about CNY defeatist mentality. The number 1 reason the area is losing population is jobs. This has the ability to enhance the community and create jobs. Should CNY just give up and admit defeat or fight to keep the young here?

Fight ... thankfully Onondaga county was one of the few to grow last census and more people are moving back to the area recently.

Engineering wise a stadium in the inner harbor would likely be much more expensive. There is very weak soil in that area and piles would need to be driven 100-200 ft down to rock to support the foundations as they were at Destiny. The Fayette site has much better soil conditions building may be able to be supported on simple spread and mat foundations on soil or excavated to rock or much shorter piles to rock. Just another note why this may be the site they are pushing.

Absolutely ive been wanting this for years!

Understand. My point was there are many companies whose presence is no longer felt in the area and there are still a few who are slugging it out including Lockheed/Martin. Rather than everyone bitch about what happened, we should be working to figure out how to keep what's here and more importantly work to attract more manufacturing base. We need more than Wegmans and hospitals to sustain the area.
