AP Newsbreak: Source says Rice video sent to NFL

This all goes back to the original decision to suspend for 2 games. Had the NFL got it right from the git go and suspended for say, 6 games, this might not have the legs it does now - even with the video. The video might simply have stifled those who might have taken the position that 6 games was too much. Now however, the video served to open the wound caused by the weak sanctions.
sadly, the inconsistencies the NFL has in their punishment is NOTHING compared to the inconsistencies of the actual justice system of the US. Interesting that this one case from a private organization gets us so worked up but we can be passive about so much that actually impacts us to a much greater degree. As a society, we do a crappy job picking our battles.

interesting.

good point on bigben too, that makes them inconsistent, or it lays out a crime depth chart ie: rape>abuse. 2 games was certainly a joke regardless.

a cover up is a problem, negligence isnt much better but is likely the better outcome for the league.

now, why is Roger a dink?

i thnk hes been 1 hell of a Commish...up till this.
He came into the NFL Commish job talking about protecting the shield and has been a complete phony and while the sport is more popular than ever its not because of him and has managed to be a phony. He handled the Patriots Spygate, Saints Bounty, Big Ben, stuff ALL DIFFERENTLY. Tags had to save his a$$ during the Saints Bounty scandal. He popped Sean Payton for an entire season which was a joke.
Goodell is not a good commissioner he is a highly paid pinata. Goodell lied during that interview with Norah O'Donnell if NOBODY from the NFL saw that tape then he his staff for a multi-billion dollar corporation is pathetic. The NFL bullies every media partner, news outlet, and treats its customers like crap. The NFL needs new leadership they can find a new spineless jellyfish to be their lackey. Condi Rice on line 1.

Exactly. They had this same discussion on ESPN- ie; why did Goodell go from "Hanging Judge", to indecisive wimp? He came into the league and basically threw down the gauntlet- yet his last few decisions have been softer than Charmin.
I think the owners tweaked his cape on his early harsher decisions, plus the push-back from the NFLPA, and the mishandling of the Saints Bounty-Gate, and he now seems reluctant and indecisive.

They knew there was a tape, and they HAD to know that, eventually, it was going to get out.

They could have gotten it one way or another, if they wanted to.

Al, I think he's done now...but won't say it yet.

He should be gone, but Kraft, Jones, Mara, and Rooney are protecting him. Goodell lied to the American people in that CBS interview or his employees are beyond stupid. Remember he told Sean Payton "ignorance is not an excuse" and now his only defense is ignorance. He has to go now. Condi Rice would be the perfect replacement. She is a women who knows football and would get the support of the people and has the contacts to be a great Commissioner.

Raven fans at the game tonight. The stupidity is high in these people. They should all got popped in their smug laughing faces.

Gotta agree with SAS on this one.. When did our country become so obsessed with outrage. My goodness, social media and 24 hours news has turned everyone into the rabble rabble rabble crowd from South Park. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/09/stephen-a-smith-roger-goodell-now-president-rocker

Or the interwebs and Twitter are finally shining the spotlight on deplorable actions that in the not to distant past would be swept under the rug.

Politicians and CEO's are finding that they are being held accountable by the public in a way they weren't prior.

The mob effect can be dangerous - but I'd take outrage over that punch and a potential coverup over business as usual everyday, all day.

I'll agree emphatically with your first part but in a world where everything goes viral and people flip out endlessly, it gets tiresome.

Agreed. The ESPN echo chamber is bad enough. Throw in Twitter and FB, way too much noise.

Honest question- why do we care more about the commish of a private sports league lying than a justice system that was ok letting him do nothing and walk? If he's on trial like he should be, this whole scenario if different. Why don't we focus on the root issues?

Ray Rice was charged with 3rd degree assault and had no prior record till this incident. He was never going to jail for this crime he would have gotten probation. I worked in the Mecklenburg County(Charlotte,NC)DA's office for 3 years and if I got this case it would have been hard to get any real jail for Rice when the complaining witness(Janay Rice) wouldn't cooperate while the tape would have gotten a conviction most likely the sentence would likely be probation or at worst a suspended sentence with probation.
I answered your question now why do you care I think Goodell should be gone. In my opinion the guy has lied in an interview and his punishments have been inconsistent and I find the guy unlikable. This thread wasn't created by me but when I have an opinion it tends to be interrupted on this board as a strong opinion. If people disagree with me I have no problem as long as it's what that person thinks and its not just disagreeing with me having my opinion.

We had a president who lied about having an affair while in the White House. I think we can let an NFL Commissioner slide on mishandling, at worst lying, about a domestic abuse case in which the victim just wanted to act like it never happened.

If I didn't know any better I'd think you want to take a crack at Janay Rice yourself. Your posts are oddly defensive of Ray Ray.

Go read what Goodell told Sean Payton about the Bounty scandal. He said ignorance is not an excuse.
Bill Clinton paid for his lie he was impeached by the House of Representatives. If an authority is an emperor without clothes they deserve to be called out. After how inconsistent Goodell has been I believe he should go. The guy is an epic dink and isn't trustworthy anymore.

Whoa, no need to be defensive. I just think it's an interesting angle to the discussion. I guess I'm a lot more fired up about a system that lets that knockout happen without real repercussions than I am about a private sector CEO doing something inconsistent or not transparent. His fundamental job is to make money. It's somebody else's job to punish people who assault females. That's the dropped ball I care about on this one. If everybody gets their wish and goodell is gone, is anybody fundamentally better off?

Oh, I'm sorry. I'm not part of the overreaction brigade? I'm pretty sure I've clarified multiple times how awful the act Ray Rice committed was.

Your post is ridiculous and uncalled for.

If you can't accept an opposing viewpoint then block me. If you check out any thread that involves an incident that has gone viral or an act someone who's been pretty clean committed, you will see the same opinion I have here in those threads. Not just Ray Rice.

I do not believe one act defines a man. I believe in second chances. I also think i have a totally different social experience being a 31 year old who spent much of his 20's modeling and being around a lot of these types of people, people who seem out of touch with reality or above the law and the women that they typically associate with. Does that excuse what Ray Rice did... HELL NO, but y'all act like you live in glass houses and are quick to demonize people. I get that some of you feel very strongly about certain issues but like I said, I believe no one act defines someone, and in any thread involving an isolated incident involving someone with no past, I'm probably going to forgive and assume they just messed up and deserve a second chance as we all, every single one of us mess up. Whether its what Ray Rice did, stealing, lying, drug use, alcohol abuse, infidelity... We all make mistakes.

My defense comes from others wanting to come after me saying I speak with a strong opinion when all I do is give my opinion.
Rice was never going to jail for this crime sadly. The complaining witness wouldn't cooperate and since in pre-trial discussions the fact Rice has no record he would get only a suspended sentence at worst its why the defense team was able to get diversion. I hate the fact the prosecutor gave him diversion over pure probation but I have no idea hoe the discussions went. If I was the prosecutor and I saw that tape no chance even without Janay Rice testifying I would never have given diversion and would have tried to get a suspended sentence with probation and make Rice have jail time hanging over his head if he didn't stay out of trouble. However, probation would likely have been the deal.

You just continue to focus on her reaction, which if find interesting, and unique. You've posted about it a few times and told me my post was ridiculous when I questioned her safety, as if you really know what's going on with the Rice's.

The first time I smash a woman's head, I'll be less demonizing. It's just my opinion, but I believe people who are capable of doing something like this have either done it before and/or will do it again. It's not like he stole a car. That said, he'll play in the NFL again someday if he keeps in shape, so no need to get too worked up. There was a time no one thought Vick would ever be accepted back in the NFL.

He could very well be Ike Turner but we have no evidence of that and I focus on her reaction because she married him and defends him. I get that people claim Stockholm syndrome/battered wife syndrome and that is a real thing, but we have no evidence of that and I don't think it's fair to make broad assumptions of such a serious offense with no data to back it up in terms of this being a multiple act of domestic abuse.

Have you never done anything hurtful to someone? I'm sure you're not perfect. If someone shined a light into all areas of your life at all times would you have no skeletons?

Oh there are plenty. No physical harm, but a couple of ladies over the years who would have appreciated a call back. I assume I'd have heard if I left any buns in the oven.

I don't really have sympathy for high profile athletes. I mean yeah it's a microscope but a well funded one. Between a signing bonus and one year salary, they make enough to be set for life (if they're not idiots with their money). Given the choice, I'd take the money and microscope over having to work until retirement age and guessing I got it right with the amount saved.
