Ash is out?

Greg won 1 game in 05. And no, this team was young and improved in s lot of key areas. Were they perfect? No. But many of their deficiencies were in areas where SS is typically strong, or they were a result of youth. At no point could you have said that about Greg's teams.

The offense has regressed every year he's been here. The defense cratered this year.

The best player was the punter.

1. It's true about the seats, but you have to makes decisions about the long run of the program. Winning cures a lot, including attendance. I would have put him on the hot seat next year.

2. QB hits was/is my biggest criticism of the guy. Ironically, I got into several heated arguments on this very board about that issue, and I was not defending SS. However, nobody is perfectly good or perfectly bad (except GRob). The question is do the pros outweigh the cons.

Still, YOUR individual dislike of the guy doesn't make his termination not controversial.

I liked him fine as a DC. Wished he was Bud Foster to Marrone's Beamer but it didn't work out that way. I thought he was in over his head as our HC. Hope he gets another DC gig so he can excel and keep his family in one spot.

He'll never get another P5 HC gig.

That's not true. The offense was better this year than last, and that was with youth. The defense fell off, but it's hard to argue that you shouldn't give SS the benefit of the doubt on the D. Anyway, they're young is several important areas.

I agree about him as a DC, but disagree about his chances as a HC. He certainly won't get one in the immediate future, but I don't think that him eventually working his way back up to a P5 HC job is outside the realm of possibility.

Yes. There is a high probability that anyone with talent would have avoided a situation where SS thought it was rational to announce the terms of his contract. This has also been undeniably a very rocky transition process - relative to both previous SU hires and hires at other peer schools. He may turn out to be right. In fact, I hope he does. However, very little beyond blind faith inspires confidence in the guy. And, it is EXTREMELY unlikely that he will be a better AD than the doc (albeit unless he hires GRob again, football will likely improve under his tenure).

It's been 4 days since our last game and the only thing that has occurred is rumor mongering and insane reactions on this board.

4. Days.

Rocky transition?

4 days.

That logic only holds if you assume that all other factors are substantially similar AND Coach P's termination was not controversial.
Wow - you and I (and apparently a lot of others here) have vastly different definitions of 'controversial'.

Your analysis is far too shallow, and whether or not you agree with the firing, it's hard to argue that a significant contingent of the fan base disagreed. That, by definition, makes it controversial.

The significant part that stopped coming to games?

We were 7-17 the last 2 years with a half empty stadium.

Don't mistake everyone agreeing that a nice guy got a nice send off as people wanting him to stay.

As for Coyle, if he were out there publicly commenting on all of this, he'd be the only AD doing such a thing. I'd think less of him. You're letting internet rumors form your opinion.

I would say that almost everyone on here is letting internet rumors form their opinion on this search. ;)

I disagree with this assessment. This years offense was better than last. That being said neither were very good but I really don't know what people expect when both season we had true freshman running the offense at some point. Seem like over expectation if you honestly think a kid coming from high school is going to be win with no expierience at the college level.

Defensively we weren't as good as past years but cratered is extreme. We were weaker in the secondary than past years but what teams don't see ebbs and flows on either side of the ball. We can't just reload kids at position when the kid starter leaves.

Great that you have have an opinion. I really don't see how you can even say that he will never get a HC gig. He may not but to think that he didn't learn from this experience and will be better for it doesn't translate to me.

What do you call going from 27th to 100th in total defense, I'd say it's the definition of cratered.

That's our job. We're commoners. (No offense Tristan).

So we should be able to maintain a defense in the top third?

Edit and just to put perspective on it. BC is number 1 in overall d and Wake is 40. It will be interesting to see where they end up next year.

My point still stands of your accesment

He said a P5 HC gig. SS could become a MAC level HC. I am sure he would be qualified for that. He wasn't qualified to be a P5 HC when we gave him that job.

SS was not on the radar of a single P5 team to be their HC when we hired him. With the results he put at SU he isn't going to get another P5 job unless he is the interim HC in a crazy situation.

I said P5 gig.

I'll say this, fans seem massively loyal to him, even with the losses and the bad, bad clock management and the Dungey / UL stuff.

some of that regression was inevitable. even if being in the hundreds wasn't regression, doesn't matter, it's terrible

Facts have no business in a message board debate

A person can fail at a job and you can still like them as a person and still hope the very best for them in life.
I agree with this 100%. However can someone please tell me the differences between Greg Robinson and Scott Shafer as men? I don't remember Robinson being a bad guy or saying anything negative about the community. Scott Shafer is a good man but I don't see him as this alltime great character man. I just see him a good guy and somebody I wish well in the future.
The team rallied for Gerg at Notre Dame and this year the team rallied for SS at the end of BC.

Whoa. I'd say it's personality. I think Shafer has an honesty about him that's rare. I didn't think Gerg was a leader worth following, not even once.

I respect him for how he went about many things. Even if I didn't like him as a person I still would have said the same thing. It may not be likely that he gets a p 5 HC gig but to say never! It's excessive and I get its your opinion but I don't get that overall statement.
