Buddy got a scholarship offer from Gonzaga. He will be fine. Maybe not this year or next but by the time he's a senior (at worst) we will all be glad he's on this team.

Hope he makes it, obvs, but the speed issue is clearly evident.

And when he gets the ball, defenders see it and collapse on him immediately, rightfully thinking they might force a turnover as he struggles with the basics of handling the rock and passing.

You can't teach speed so hopefully the game will slow down for him... Some kids can't make that jump at D1 level - hope he's not one of them... Will be a hard pill for JB if so...

He's young and has lots of time to develop, so not much of a worry at this point.

Nothing wrong with discussing his performance and development... It will continue, as it should... Coach's son and all.

Well, you kinda can teach speed.

As you become more familiar with an environment, you think less and depend more on conditioned reflex. Tyus isn’t thinking about lots that he does. He is reacting in a learned way.

No player is off limits but the criticisms should be fair and I think the OP is being fair. I live locally and have watched Jamie and Buddy alot over the years. I am a guy who believes Buddy will be very very solid 4 year player for us. His stroke is gold and I thought his shots looked good last night. I don’t see him playing much once conference play starts but that’s ok and he won’t have a problem with it. He will be a great teammate. He will continue to work hard and he will earn every minute he gets!

I have coached my kid above the youth / rec level and it can be hard on everyone involved. Jim has thought this through hard and if he thinks Buddy should get minutes he will. I don’t think he’ll have a problem with sitting him either.

You absolutely can teach speed and quickness. There are thousands of people who make a living doing this exact thing. Not everyone will have elite or natural speed but many many athletes will train and will make gains in these areas.

Folks have said Buddy is a bit slow in the zone but I haven’t seen him give up penetration yet to any guard. I believe his basketball IQ makes up for any ‘slowness’ he may have. He understands positioning and angles better than most so he will be fine. I’d like to see him mix it up on the boards...show people his toughness...take no prisoners baby!

I would be very upset if Buddy ends up at a mid major. I firmly believe we need more 3 star guys who bust their butt because these guys normally turn into very very good players by the 3rd and 4th seasons.

Good discussion folks...love you all.

He'll develop and become a very good college player. The kid probably feels a little additional pressure for obvious reasons, but that will subside. I see him developing into a contributor junior and senior years.. and even If he was a terrible bball player I'm good with whatever JB does. JB is all business and would never put his own kid into a situation that doesn't work.

I made the comparison in a thread a few days ago — I envision Buddy as having an extremely similar skill set and career progression as Marius Janulis.

Buddy: Bigger/Stronger/Better Ball Handler /Driver, not just a stand still Jump shooter..

Marius was listed as 6’6, 212 and Buddy is 6’5 185. I meant it as a compliment. I see Buddy as a two year starter as an upperclassman and the 3rd/4th team scoring option.

Yes, to a degree... In the thinking-2-passes-ahead sort of way with off ball movement... That's one thing that Howard instantly brought to the team LN that has been missing and it was obvious... Jury is out on buddy but he's got plenty of time to develop and prove if he has the mettle.

Think Buddy will be a good player over time but not ready to contribute this year (which is perfectly fine and similar to most freshmen including some top 50 guys). Once Frank is fully healthy, BB really shouldn't be getting more than 2-4 minutes (if that) as Tyus, Frank and Carey are all significantly better.

When in the game, I have no problem with him taking threes as he will make them and that's his role. If he can hit one then the defense has to recognize and maybe he stays in some more.

Cuse!

I think he's very much pressing. He proved he could hit shots and even create them in the exhibitions. yes, this is a higher level of competition but I think he's competing with himself right now- that and the name on the back of the jersey, no matter how they spell it.

I agree we will see less of him the rest of the way with Howard, Carey, Battle, Hughes and Washington available. I would like to see more of Washington than we saw last night.

Guys like Rautins and Southerland did nothing their first years. Nichols played but shot poorly. Give it time. He’s not ready.

This is it. I think he’s been solid all around but he’s only here to shoot the 3 and he’s not doing that well.

I’m sure he’s good at practice or else JB wouldn’t play him.

I actually hope he gets a chance in a lesser role this year the book isn’t closed on him helping out this seasons team as a 3 and D specialist imo.

I like it. Size and foot speed wise, and being a pure shooter I think it’s a solid comparison.

I feel like Buddy might have more potential as a passer?

If I recall correctly, Janulis was a pretty solid defender as an upperclassman even though he lacked some foot speed.

Too bad SU doesn't have a Triple A farm team to put guys like BB until they get their stroke back,

If this was the case we wouldn't be able to field a team at all because they would all be AAA

Didn't JB say in a presser response to a direct question that Washington was stuck behind a player that is playing well and an experienced player that was coming back shortly. Based on this very blunt response, seems to me Washington's minutes are going to be very limited unless something happens to one of those guys in front of him.

I think Washington could have some of Buddy's minutes just to see what he could give us this year. HW got 1 minute last night in a game we won by 21.

Agreed, but if it didn’t happen while Howard was out and we badly needed a PG, it doesn’t seem that it will happen this year.

It stinks for Washington that he had to spend all offseason rehabbing rather than working on his game. If he hadn’t gotten injured last year, he probably would’ve had a really nice opportunity to get minutes and show what he could do for the past month.

Buddy had two good open looks when he first came in that just rimmed out. If those went in, we would all be singing a different song. Once he missed those, he tried to drive and shoot a floater, and that did not work out. There was a 2-3 minute stretch where both Battle and Brissett were out, and I thought the team had decent flow on offense and defense with Buddy, Carey, Hughes, MD, and Sidibe. I think he is trying to do a little too much, and, once he starts hitting some shots, he is probably going to get 2-5 minutes per game to come in and shoot. I know it was Colgate, but I think it is good that we have the pieces now to let Battle, Frank, and Brissett get a few minutes of rest outside of timeouts.

I agree. Buddy is going to contribute. He needs a year or two but will be fine. Look at the progress Frank has made.

Possible that HW isn’t 100% yet.

I like Washington and I wish he would get some minutes as well, whether for a press package or just to give time.
But between Tyus frank and Carey. Idk if there’s any time for pt. And also having buddy there too. People are going to be left out.
I imagine a rotation of Sidibe, marek, and Carey. Buddy, wash, and bras in mop up duty, though probably someone will redshirt.

NOBODY will redshirt.

This isn’t football.
They’ve all played in games that count, so, barring major injury, their chance for a non-medical redshirt was gone the second they checked into a game.
