BC and JB presser

Two thoughts under one subject - was that the worst ACC team we have ever seen? Wow were they bad.

As for JB presser - I get he doesn't want to do them. I get that the question are not always worthy of response. I also get that "JB is going to be JB" and "he's earned the right to do what he wants", but I personally am sick of the eye roll and the obvious "you are not worthy of my genius" attitude that he shows local press and SU students.

It's 10 minutes be a pro and cut the snark. To me he comes across as a bully, and it isn't a good look.

And before I get flamed - I know I"m in the minority here, at least among posters.

I agree with you. JB is clearly a great coach. It is a simple fact to say that his press conferences are, by and large, unprofessional. It has nothing to do with his talent or ability, it is just unprofessional behavior that doesn't reflect credit upon himself, the athletic department, or the university. Since I don't attend those and ask questions, it doesn't bother me terribly, but I always think about it terms of how I would react if people who worked for me conducted themselves like that, or how my bosses would react if I conducted myself like that. It wouldn't be well received. I work in a very specialized field and work with the top professionals in the world in this field - and I have a piece of advice I have given out many times to coworkers and employees: "Being smarter than everyone else is not a valid reason to be a jerk." JB could take that advice in my opinion.

You have a situation with a person being forced to answer questions he'd rather just skip altogether. He's forced to provide answers to persons not entitled to any answers. When things aren't going so well, that's a crappy situation to be in. I'd be a jerk too.
I think reporters are entitled to answers. At the very least, they wouldn't be doing their jobs if they didn't ask them. Yes, they probably ask stupid questions from time to time but I think Boeheim delivers more snark than they ask bad questions.

Does this mean I think he's a bad coach? Of course not. Does it make him a bad person? No, from everything I've heard, this isn't typical of his behavior outside these situations. All I conclude from it is that JB can't help himself sometimes when speaking. I've been guilty of that myself.

From CuseFan in VT above:

"His answer to that question also pretty much clears up any misconceptions about whether or not JB teaches fundamentals to his players. "I'm not teaching that."

A perfect example how Presser responses are used to confirm a person's bias.

How many things can you not like about a team or its coach or the school and still consider yourself a fan?

I'm a fan of SU hoops in spite of JB. I'll admit it, I think his time is done. 40 years and 1 championship is enough.

And I see very little fundamental skills development in players while they are on the Hill. I've been saying that for years.

But to your point, the question itself was NOT designed to catch JB in a gotcha moment. It was asking what JB will do to ensure he gets maximum effort out of Roberson on the offensive glass without causing us to lose Roberson to fouls in a more competitive game should the situation arise. I think it's a fair question.

Calhoun was snarky as well.

Cut from the same cloth.

"Is there anything Tyler can do to avoid getting in foul trouble?" was the question?

And JB brushed it off?

Now for those of you that have ever played a game of basketball, what do you think the answer to that question is?

How about, "Yeah, he can avoid foul trouble by not committing fouls. That means no reach-in's, no over-the-backs, no out-of-control offensive fouls and jumping straight up when contesting stuff inside.

Is the reporter here suggesting that JB knows some secret technique or approach that TR might be able to use and is not? Or does he really want to hear "don't reach-in, don't trip, don't reach over someone's back. etc. etc."?

I'd be curious to know if JB had talked to TR before picking up that second over the back (his 4th foul) to know if they had recognized the problem, issued instructions to the player, and those instructions were ignored. That would probably explain why JB was so mad at TR when he came off and watched the rest of the game.

I dont know why people get all upset over these pressers. Just dont watch it. I havent watched a JB presser in probably a decade because I know what to expect and quite frankly could care less what happens. I watched the game and I can draw my own conclusions or read an article about it.

Its like licking a 9 volt battery when you were a kid. You know your going to get a shock yet you keep doing it. Amazing

"Tyler needs to be careful that he is not too aggressive on the defensive end. We want him to steal and rebound and play tough defense but not at the expense of having to sit on the bench because of foul trouble." You can give a "non answer" answer without looking like a jerk.

He was, but I don't recall him dissing his players so much publicly. If you want to get after that player, then do it privately or in practice, etc. You can clearly get your point across without berating a kid in a public presser. For instance, I liked how Hop put a different twist in when he was the temporary head coach. Instead of berating Roberson like I don't know what the heck he was doing out there, etc...he smoothly injected that we just need to find a way to get/keep him plugged in...

I didn't watch the presser but if that was the question - it's a pretty good question.

So he should say what you want him to say? Ok.

Agreed. I also felt like he's completely given up on Howard with the way he answered that question. Just not necessary. And I question the effectiveness.

I honestly don't think there's a "good question' in his eyes.

I think he finds it insulting for the most part that he has to sit there and field questions from people who don't know nearly as much as he does about basketball.

And he's probably right.

Ha, stupid thing is I still do it when I'm testing to see whether that 9V still has any juice left. :bat:

Thanks! It was my interpretation of his question.

So he should say what you want him to say? Ok.
No. I am just giving a response to Townie who actually asked what the answer to the question could be. My response was a suggestion in a sort of "here's one way to anwer it" mentality. Have a nice day.

"it was a battle and i thought we all battled well. roberson is a battler and i thought he held his own in those battles underneath. over all proud of the way we battled today..."

I LOVE Coach but I do wish he would conduct himself as a gentleman during the pressers.

No matter what you are faced with I was always taught to treat others the way you want to be treated.

I do agree that his behavior, at times, would be considered bullying. He is better than that.

Personally, I think his demeanor with the press is part of the reason why the NCAA hammered him so hard. He has made a lot of enemies over the years, despite all of his great work in the community and fighting cancer.

I stopped reading in the middle of the second page but I have two thoughts, FWIW:
1) Most reporters are . They purposely misconstrue, or even create misquotes in order to create controversy, as any person in a public position that is not in lock-step with the media mind-set will attest to.
2) My only concern with the pressers is that I do not want to see anything that might hurt recruiting.

JB is a great guy in person from what I hear from people who are very close to him. I think he acts poorly in pressers as well but I think that he is a different person outside of that. Wasn't it CTO who once said that he talks on the phone to people who call him to talk about cancer. I once asked him to sign a basketball for a friend of mine who was dying of pancreatic cancer. He could not have been nicer.

So let me get this straight. JB had cancer, and he can relate to others who have cancer? Wow. Let's give Jimmy a medal. If anything it just reinforces that he chooses when he wants to be a and when he wants to be a civil and warm human being. Being genuine and nice with cancer patients, as a cancer survivor, has to be the lowest common denominator for human empathy.

And then we have others saying it's ok to be a if you've been at your job long enough. Sounds legit.

And then we have some saying he can be a if he doesn't like the questioning or if he isn't in a good mood. Is that how you would teach your kids to handle adversity? It shouldn't matter if the questions are stupid or repetitive. Be a professional. It's really not that hard if you put some effort into it.

Others say as long as he wins games, you'd could care less what he does in press conferences. I'm in the same boat - ignorance is bliss. But these last 2-3 years he isn't winning. His ACC record is abysmal. We'll most likely have 1 NCAA win to show for the last 3 years. So, yeah, the off-the-court BS just stands out even more now.

Most people also learn about being "the bigger man" at some point as well.

YES

I think the point was that there's a way to answer these questions in a non dickish way.
I know. My point is I don't think he was being a dick. Obviously a lot of people here see it differently.
