Those students are going to become professional reporters. JB telling them their questions suck and they suck at life is probably not going to crack the top 10 of worst things said to them in their careers. I'm not saying JB is taking it upon himself to be a part of their eduction, I think he's just an old man being a jerk, but I doubt it's harming them long-term.
Thanks for the road map. A lot of us went to Newhouse. I would hope that those of us who did would watch that presser and come to a different conclusion.
For some reason, the ESPN radio station I listen to up here (101.3 fm) seems to recruit kids out of Newhouse. I think the last three all are grads and each and every one of them has shared a story or two on air about JB and his tirades. Maybe it doesn't affect them long term, but they do all remember it and not fondly. Just seems completely unnecessary to me.
I think I've said my piece on this for now. I agree this thread has likely run its course. Asking JB to change his press conferences is akin to asking JB to change his defense.
I'm glad I don't know Boeheim. I enjoy watching his teams, he does a great job, but I know I wouldn't like him
JB is a great guy in person from what I hear from people who are very close to him. I think he acts poorly in pressers as well but I think that he is a different person outside of that. Wasn't it CTO who once said that he talks on the phone to people who call him to talk about cancer. I once asked him to sign a basketball for a friend of mine who was dying of pancreatic cancer. He could not have been nicer.I'm glad I don't know Boeheim. I enjoy watching his teams, he does a great job, but I know I wouldn't like him
Well then I'll refer you to post #8 in this thread. As did my wife.
I'd love to hear your actual conclusion though.
Two thoughts under one subject - was that the worst ACC team we have ever seen? Wow were they bad.
As for JB presser - I get he doesn't want to do them. I get that the question are not always worthy of response. I also get that "JB is going to be JB" and "he's earned the right to do what he wants", but I personally am sick of the eye roll and the obvious "you are not worthy of my genius" attitude that he shows local press and SU students.
It's 10 minutes be a pro and cut the snark. To me he comes across as a bully, and it isn't a good look.
And before I get flamed - I know I"m in the minority here, at least among posters.
He probably wouldn't like you either, so at least it would be mutual.
Boeheim has been doing this for FORTY years. That’s FORTY years of bad, stupid or worse yet loaded questions designed to spark a controversy or that fit a narrative the reporter wished were true because it would make for a more interesting story.
And the sympathy on here --- by some --- is for the reporters?
The difference at SU these days is that JB doesn’t have to put up with the same level of nonsense that a more junior coach might have to. He’s at the end of his career and he is pretty much untouchable because he has proven he knows what he is doing.
Asking a question about team fatigue at the end of the season is an example. If JB even hints they are tired and that is one of the reasons for poor performance, the Press has what it wants and the stories of poor recruiting or poor bench management or whatever are waiting in the wings. (“If we can just get him to admit the team is tired, we can have a field day.”)
The Press isn’t worried about the truth here. They aren’t worried about anything but their own careers and readership and sales.
Everyone knows the game. And it’s frustrating to them because JB won’t play it and more maddening because he doesn’t have to.
Screw the press, I say. If they can’t ask intelligent questions let them go back to writing Obits and give someone else a chance.
As far as I can tell, by requiring them to ask good questions is doing them a favor.
Anything Tyler can do to avoid foul trouble? That got a an eyeroll and brushoff . Same dude repeats the question a few minutes later, which generates sarcasm. That makes him a bully. What questions asked last night were stupid or loaded?
And your point is fair but if Jay Bilas or Andy Katz asks the very same question, JB gives a different answer even though Katz has done to JB things WAER or DO guys never have done.Boeheim has been doing this for FORTY years. We all get taught the golden rule at some point in our lives. Don't be a dick. Pretty simple.
I don't care how long you've been doing it for. That doesn't buy you the right to treat people like sh+t for doing their job. A job which, I would imagine pays a fraction of what Jim Boeheim makes to coach a game played by teenagers.
