I get a kick out of people extrapolating a single message board post into a opinion of the entire country.

You're right, this country in general isn't thinned skinned.

Those students are going to become professional reporters. JB telling them their questions suck and they suck at life is probably not going to crack the top 10 of worst things said to them in their careers. I'm not saying JB is taking it upon himself to be a part of their eduction, I think he's just an old man being a jerk, but I doubt it's harming them long-term.

For some reason, the ESPN radio station I listen to up here (101.3 fm) seems to recruit kids out of Newhouse. I think the last three all are grads and each and every one of them has shared a story or two on air about JB and his tirades. Maybe it doesn't affect them long term, but they do all remember it and not fondly. Just seems completely unnecessary to me.

I think I've said my piece on this for now. I agree this thread has likely run its course. Asking JB to change his press conferences is akin to asking JB to change his defense.

Thanks for the road map. A lot of us went to Newhouse. I would hope that those of us who did would watch that presser and come to a different conclusion.

As did my wife.

I'd love to hear your actual conclusion though.

It's completely unnecessary, but people accept it, some people find it amusing. Makes JB look like a grumpy old dude from Syracuse, which he is. He's a great basketball coach but far from a polarizing personality. Just a grumpy old dude.

I'm glad I don't know Boeheim. I enjoy watching his teams, he does a great job, but I know I wouldn't like him

He probably wouldn't like you either, so at least it would be mutual.

JB is a great guy in person from what I hear from people who are very close to him. I think he acts poorly in pressers as well but I think that he is a different person outside of that. Wasn't it CTO who once said that he talks on the phone to people who call him to talk about cancer. I once asked him to sign a basketball for a friend of mine who was dying of pancreatic cancer. He could not have been nicer.

Well then I'll refer you to post #8 in this thread.
I realize that broadcast journalism has changed a lot since I was a student, but I'm quite sure Newhouse isn't teaching kids to repeat stupid questions until they get a reaction.

Two thoughts under one subject - was that the worst ACC team we have ever seen? Wow were they bad.

As for JB presser - I get he doesn't want to do them. I get that the question are not always worthy of response. I also get that "JB is going to be JB" and "he's earned the right to do what he wants", but I personally am sick of the eye roll and the obvious "you are not worthy of my genius" attitude that he shows local press and SU students.

It's 10 minutes be a pro and cut the snark. To me he comes across as a bully, and it isn't a good look.

And before I get flamed - I know I"m in the minority here, at least among posters.

Aw. Looks like somebody is a little thin skinned. If you can't take Coach B your not gonna make it in this line of work.

BTW, Coach B treats the media the way other coaches would love to treat them. For that i have no problem with him.

Boeheim has been doing this for FORTY years. That’s FORTY years of bad, stupid or worse yet loaded questions designed to spark a controversy or that fit a narrative the reporter wished were true because it would make for a more interesting story.

And the sympathy on here --- by some --- is for the reporters?

The difference at SU these days is that JB doesn’t have to put up with the same level of nonsense that a more junior coach might have to. He’s at the end of his career and he is pretty much untouchable because he has proven he knows what he is doing.

Asking a question about team fatigue at the end of the season is an example. If JB even hints they are tired and that is one of the reasons for poor performance, the Press has what it wants and the stories of poor recruiting or poor bench management or whatever are waiting in the wings. (“If we can just get him to admit the team is tired, we can have a field day.”)

The Press isn’t worried about the truth here. They aren’t worried about anything but their own careers and readership and sales.

Everyone knows the game. And it’s frustrating to them because JB won’t play it and more maddening because he doesn’t have to.

Screw the press, I say. If they can’t ask intelligent questions let them go back to writing Obits and give someone else a chance.

As far as I can tell, by requiring them to ask good questions is doing them a favor.

JB's pressers used to be entertaining. The last two were just sour. Oh Lord

What questions asked last night were stupid or loaded?

Anything Tyler can do to avoid foul trouble? That got a an eyeroll and brushoff . Same dude repeats the question a few minutes later, which generates sarcasm. That makes him a bully.

And your point is fair but if Jay Bilas or Andy Katz asks the very same question, JB gives a different answer even though Katz has done to JB things WAER or DO guys never have done.

What questions asked last night were stupid or loaded?

I didn't watch it.

I'm talking about the pattern over the years and the press relationship with coaches in general.

Friend of mine covers UConn basketball for the Hartford paper. During a presser in Atlantis, he said JB ripped a DO reporter for what my friend said was a good question.

When I was introduced to JB years ago and he was told I was getting out of the newspaper business to get into teaching, JB smiled and said I was making a smart move.

He hasn't changed and he never will.

I went and listened to it because I wanted to be more informed when speaking here.

I don't believe it was the same guy because I couldn't hear the first question and the second one was loud and clear and seemed to come from a different spot based on Jim's eyes. I think the second question was dumb based on JB brushing off the first reporters' attempt to get JB to talk about Roberson and his rebounding and the scornful eye-roll. His answer was sufficient to get the sarcastic point across (gets taught at the 6th grade level), but he took it to level by asking other people in the crowd if they understood. I think the line of questioning is fair because Roberson makes his living going after offensive boards, and one of the ways he is so effective is tipping the ball out to other players (which he doesn't receive credit for in the stats I believe).

His answer to that question also pretty much clears up any misconceptions about whether or not JB teaches fundamentals to his players. "I'm not teaching that."

The odd thing to me is that he treats DO reporters badly for things that students reporters did years ago. Like many years ago. Or so has been reported here in the past.

I didn't care for how he disted Howard a bit after Donna mentioned to JB how FH got a pretty good amount of time in the first half which allowed G to play off the ball some. JB's comment (besides placing a puss on his face) was that he was just looking for Howard to do something, but that it didn't work...

I didn't get his snide comment. FH has been out for a bit and just coming back. I thought he did ok, he made a very nice pass in the first half to Coleman which color commentator Bonner acknowledged enthusiastically on the air. JB yanking Howard a few minutes later for a travel (which I thought the ref just quick whistled there in that moment) and then chewing his ass out immediately afterwards was unfounded.

We all get taught the golden rule at some point in our lives. Don't be a dick. Pretty simple.

I don't care how long you've been doing it for. That doesn't buy you the right to treat people like sh+t for doing their job. A job which, I would imagine pays a fraction of what Jim Boeheim makes to coach a game played by teenagers.

this post has me grinning.

From CuseFan in VT above:

"His answer to that question also pretty much clears up any misconceptions about whether or not JB teaches fundamentals to his players. "I'm not teaching that."

A perfect example how Presser responses are used to confirm a person's bias.

How many things can you not like about a team or its coach or the school and still consider yourself a fan?

Additionally, it is a job requirement of his to go out there and conduct himself professionally whether he likes being there or not...period! He is an employee, and, there are many times in his pressers, quite frankly, he handles himself unprofessionally.
