Brent Axe says Reds job should be in jeopardy

Question for board insiders as I don't really understand who is responsible for results? Is the AD or BOT ?

Since JW has been hired

Football - 52-59 with bowls in 4 out of 9 years
Basketball - 163-129 - 55% winning percentage and only making Tournament 3 out of 9 years

It seems that JW can only do so much and a lot of the decisions are out of his hands. I also think he has been successful in other aspects of the job but these results do not scream untouchable? What am I missing?
nothing. He doesn't get to make decisions especially ones that include JB and others that include major financial issues in a vacuum

His reconstruction/re-branding of the JMA Dome has been masterful.

His decision to hire Fran Brown was inspired.

He handled the Jim Boeheim retirement well.

And his transformation of the Athletic Department into a first rate operation has been impressive.

John Wildhack has been an outstanding AD.

The BB program will be back.

Exactly. Throw men’s lacrosse win loss record Into the mix and it’s even worse. Maybe JW is great and is being handcuffed by dip shyt board members and an awful chancellor but one would thing he’d bail if they aren’t letting him run athletics as he sees fit.

So he shouldn't get credit for dino dismissal and Fran contract? People love to credit him for the good results and protect him from the bad.
He should get credit and blame for decisions which he controls. Not those that he is simply executing.

Exactly. I mean, good god, he wasn’t even the guy that hired Dino. He extended him after the best season the team had since 2001.

Roger. Got it. Everything matters except win/loss records and athletic department controversy.

Coyle... Met with the board a few times... Shook his head... Hired Dino. Got the call from Minny with a big pay increase offer... Said outty.

All it comes down to is what was JW’s level of authority with hiring Red and providing him a (lucrative?) multi-year contract? If it was forced upon him (I’m struggling to see how or why) then he gets a bit of a pass. If he was the driver and advocate for it, then it’s completely fair to criticize him. If he failed to see the changing landscape of college basketball and didn’t prepare appropriately, then it’s completely fair to criticize JW.

Sure, he has some wins (Dome, Fran) but he also has some losses (basketball). Unfortunately, my expectations for a high major D1 AD is to not bat .500.

Are you comparing us to Chaminade?
Ha, maybe this year?

Point was a lot people want to argue if Red had 19 or 20 wins last year because one was vs Chaminade, a D2 school. But my point is what is really the difference if we beat Chaminade or a low level D1 team.

While you do make a couple good points, you also have a remarkable ability to only tell one side of the story in your evaluations of coaches and administrators.

First to add the positive, I also give him and Mike Paulus credit for the fundraising for new football complex. Athletics fundraising hasn't been easy at SU in the past and they did a great job with that.

While I think most posters, except those who just won't cut ADJW any slack, realize that there were internal politics involved in the JB transition, I can't rate that as handling the JB retirement well. At best, it's in the middle.

While I think there was a lot of internal and fan pressure to give Dino a contract extension, that ultimately didn't work out. In any managerial profession, you're ultimately judged on whether decisions work out, not whether they made sense at the time.

I think we were way behind other schools in the transition to NIL. Yes it appears that we were trying to play by the rules and do NIL as what it's intended to be, which I respect. But we're behind other schools.

I can't say that Gary Gait has resurrected the men's lacrosse program like many had hoped. Sure they have gotten better, but I think many had expected more than one quarterfinal NCAA game by this point with the resources SU has.

ADJW was very lucky to survive how the Hillsman women's basketball situation was handled.

There was a transition in the women's lacrosse coaching staff last year that sparked a lot of rumors.

In both of the above situations, I think ADJW is very lucky SU is a private school and doesn't have to comply with open records requests from the media.

The softball, women's soccer and volleyball coaches who have all been hired during his tenure have been basically disasters. Not as many follow the Olympic sports, but they are still part of the job.

He's right.

Red is going to get a third year, because <<<reasons>>>, but the university will take some hits based upon fan apathy and declining ticket sales / revenue.

If the program doesn't knock it out of the box in the portal [which will be more difficult than I think some posters expect, given the awful season we've had], next year could get very ugly in terms of fan engagement.
This is why we need to turn the page. I don’t see the narrative on Red changing, so it’s simply a waste of time, delaying the inevitable, to bring him back because he’s not going to be able to get the talent we need to succeed. To say nothing of his coaching. If you don’t have faith in the coach being the guy, you have to let him go. I don’t understand how Wildhack has faith in Red being the guy after this season. It’s madness. Time to move on. But we won’t because…reasons.

Hey now. The softball team is 16-5.

They are off to a really good start and I've enjoyed watching them. I watch a lot of the Olympic sports on ACCNX when they are on in the afternoon while I work during the week. If the success continues, I'll be thrilled to take them off the poor decision list.
