BTN Penn State Piece

O
Bernie Fine, and the fact that he was not criminally investigated because it fell outside the statute of limitations, while Sandusky's crimes did. And yet somehow we are all horrible people who can't discuss our team while anything syracuse is as pure as the 6 ft of snow that occupies the syracuse campus at all times.

Why do I stop supporting a bunch of kids who play their asses off for my alma mater, because of some guy who coached here 15 years ago who did some pretty messed up things. I don't blame Syracuse fans for bernie fine, just like I don't blame germans for Hitler. I want to talk about football not about some guy who did some stuff when I was 9 years old.

PS. Grammar/spelling/format mistakes I blame on lots of beer.

I wouldn't expect you to be able to see the differences I the two situations. And you didn't come here to talk football.

I normally don't post on matters like this, but here we go. On the Bernie Fine/Sandusky situation. Any type of accusation in regards to physical, emotional or psychological harm should be fully investigated to the fullest extent. If those those accusations are found valid, then may that person rot and hopefully the penitentiary system to sort him out. What drives me nuts is that the media is so fast to jump on a story that it makes headline news before all the facts are known. When Bernie was accused of the abuse you could go to any sports or news website, or turn to any channel and it was in your face. But, when facts start rolling out that discredits the accusers it barely makes the news outside of the effective area. To my defense:

http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebas...-he-was-told-to-lie-about-sexual-abuse-041312

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...nge-inmate-accuser-bernie-fine-says-was-lying

Regardless I hope for an entertaining and hard fought game

Hey danistoned, before this thread gets locked, what in the hell does your age of said crime have anything to do with raping little boys?! And minimizing with 'some stuff'. Real piece you are. And you don't see any difference in the 2 "cases" right? Beat it kid, playgrounds thata way...

Almost a Reductio ad Hitlerum, but not quite.

The rest of your argument shows an appalling lack of discernment.

For a team that hasn't been hitting much in practice, the first game can be absolutely brutal. Some things are not easily simulated. Little dings hurt more the first time through. Some of this will felt by PSU in their 2nd game of the season, but certainly some of it will be felt in the 4th quarter of the first game as well.

That all said - I agree it will come down to our run D. If we can shut down the PSU run, then Shafer will dial up the pressure making throwing it very hard and risky.
We are mostly in the same boat, but I really like the idea of Ashton being a 3rd down specialist in 3rd and 5 type situations. Right now it is all theory, however.

After the allegations were made public (10-15 years after the first two sets of internal PSU "suspicions" (I'm being nice here)), Spanier still invited him into the PSU suite at a football game. The whole NCAA/athletics matter is not about Sandusky, it's about PSU's enablement and cover-up of the matter. It's an institutional matter. Clearly, the penalty wasn't enough. They should've shut the program down for 2 years.

I agree with that, and I am definitely of the opinion that depth will not be as big a factor in this game as most here think. If we win, it's because we are the better team.

That said, I am appalled that the sanctions against PSU have not had a greater effect. I was never in the camp that felt the NCAA needed to shut PSU's football program down. But I was DAMNED CLOSE to that. I think they didn't go far enough. IMHO, PSU should have been banned from TV appearances too. Let them have to tell EVERY RECRUIT. Sure you can come here, but you won't be on TV for 2 years (or 4 years). The sanctions should have HURT. And here we are barely into the first full year of sanctions, and it hasn't hurt. Yes, they have fewer scholarships, but they've still recruited top players. Yes, some kids have transferred, but not as many as I would have expected. They are still on TV. The announcers are falling over themselves in a group PSU love fest, telling viewers how hard this has been for PSU, and how much adversity they have had to overcome. It's sickening. PSU fans themselves feel as though they've been victimized. I hope PSU loses every game this year, next year, and as long as it takes for people to wake up and admit that what happened there was criminal, and deliberate, and calculated, and MUST never happen again. I wish we weren't playing PSU. (and I used to love annual games against Penn State) I always hated them as a rival, and thought that Paterno was a lying sack of $#!*. But I never disrespected the school itself. We saw last year that the tail was wagging the dog, and the football program was influencing the university to cover up. It turns my stomach. My father was a PSU fan. Today, he would be embarrassed to be one. I want SU to win. But almost more importantly, I want PSU to lose. To be humiliated by every team they play. There, I said it.
This is why I said after the sanctions came down is that in order to feel justice was served, Penn State will need to field bad teams. If they remain competitive through this it will end up feeling like the punishments weren't severe enough.

To me it's more than just winning or losing. Every PSU telecast I have seen sounds like a commercial for PSU football. And that should not be the case.

Thing is, Spanier never invited Sandusky to a suite. And it's not an "invite only" thing, either. If you have tickets to one of the suites, you have access to any suite, short of the suite owner locking the door.

There are also people who claim to have been in that suite for that game and say Sandusky wasn't even there.

This is just one of the many urban legends about this situation.

IIRC correctly there was a camera shot that showed him in the suite. Just what I need... another Googling exercise.

The fact that he was still allowed to bring kids to to PSU's practices as well as have access to the facilities was enough to warrant the weak penalties.

Enough of this talk...

There's a game in 6 days.

In the end - the punishment needed to be enough to shake the denial from that community. I don't know if it has or not - but based on the guest posters around here? Still delusional.

Biggest key is stop the power run. Zwinak ran for an average of about 150 the last 4 games last year, no game under 135. They'll know we have an aggressive, unpredictable blitzing scheme, with very experienced LBs. So I don't expect Penn State, with a new QB, to try too much fancy on offense. Run it down our throats, then play action with their top WR. Going to be a simple gameplan for them.

Shut down Zwinak, Penn State is going to have a hard time sustaining drives.

Our offensive gameplan will be nearly identical.

This game will be a rock fight.

I've been thinking the same thing, first team to 20 wins. Puntapalozza.

Penn State still has a lot of talent and O'Brien is a fine coach. Shafer is at his best devising defenses to confuse young QBs. If PSU can't the run the ball and is forced into a lot of passing situations, they aren't going to score many points, and if they try and throw in those situations, there will be some turnovers.

I think Syracuse is in a similar boat. Inexperienced QB, fairly inexperienced WRs. The staff will likely be reluctant to throw the ball much and will likely go with a conservative run oriented attack.

I expect a low scoring game, with lots of punts and 3 and outs.

Yep, and there will be a bunch of howling afterwards

Funny. I've been thinking 34-16 Syracuse win with us having at least one huge kickoff return.

PSU gave up 34 pts once last year, 35 to OSU. They gave up more than 3o one other time, on the road to Nebraska.

It's going to be a grind.

They lost some big players from that defense and with struggling to move the ball on offense they will wear down. The biggest area lack of scholarships will effect is special teams. Look at their projected starters and tell me how many you feel would start for Syracuse this year. I found 5, the biggest 2 of which were fighting hamstring issues before they closed their practices.

Congrats on summarizing why decent human beings despise everything Ped State in two paragraphs.

Another rumor reported as the truth.

After hearing the audio recording of Mrs. Fine, I'm surprised by all these hateful posts Syracuse fans have posted towards Penn State.

Just an FYI.

PSU has a DE on the squad who has an older brother who played some QB for Syracuse last season.

Carl Nassib has reportedly worked his way up the depth chart to third team and will probably see some action on Saturday.

I agree with that.

I'm beginning to detect some undertones of envy with these posts.

Just exactly what are the commentators supposed to say about the competing teams?
