Buddy Boeheim receives invite to NBA G-League Elite camp

If he gets a chance he won't be asked to get his own shot. He'll be a spot up shooter with other guys creating/facilitating. If he can defend, what I think is the bigger question mark as you also suggested, he could latch on somewhere as a shooter off the bench.

He's got his shot. That's all anyone can ask, right?

Problem is - in the NBA today - the guys that can create/facilitate shoot on par with him

But you never know

Yeah...additionally...Danny Green went 7 for 9 from 3 yesterday.

Reggie Bullock is 8 for 18 for 3 in his last two games

I don’t know if the need for “sharp shooter” exists anymore in the nba when the guys known for defense shoot this well

We don't know how well Buddy will shoot when he is a fifth option... He has been the primary or secondary option since his sophomore year.

Yeah, but - does it even matter?

He’s gonna get abused on D, either directly or via another teammate being forced to hedge and help him.

Meh handles, not a playmaker, not a great rebounder, and - if we’re being honest -
other than for about a month at the end of his Jr year, he’s been a meh shooter for the entirety of his career.
41% from the field, 36% from 3.

Those #’s don’t really scream elite shooter to me.

I mean, if I’m choosing a shooter guy from the Cuse roster, it’s Cole.
40%+ from 3 his last 2 years, and can rebound.

Buddy had a helluva college career.

I don’t think you can really judge how well buddy shoots based on this past year. With him being pretty much our only option most of the year he has somebody all over him literally every possession not to mention playing a majority of games without a point guard on the court.

What I really think he needs to do is learn how to pass out of his drive that he utilizes, he won’t be able to beat a defender off the dribble but he seems to be able to get into the lane well.

I guess we’ll see how it translates but I like his chances.

For those suggesting he would make open shots...Watch the Suns/Mavs game tonight and watch Chris Paul pick which defender he can pick on over and over again. Buddy needs to pick up his defense substantially to even get a sniff.
Buddy would be in against 2/3 team players

I agree. I think he's a long shot. But the creators that can shoot deep are your starters. Guys coming off the bench have something they're not as good at or they wouldn't come off the bench.

No Cole on that list? What’s he doing?

Wonder if it’s injury related. We never got any word on what it was.

You’re right - forgot that he didn’t play that last game or 2 at Portsmouth.

MVP 1st game. 7 mins 2nd game. DNP 3rd game. Definite injury. Severity was never mentioned.

Since we've never seen him play man D I'll reserve judgement on that side of the ball. JB should have played him on the wing more as well.

3 point shooting is a good best skill to have we'll see. He is good enough to play regular minutes in the G league so if hes lighting it up a call up could come at any time.

Buddy is a hard worker and smart basketball player. But, he doesn't have what it takes to be an NBA player. He is not the first guy to be a good or even great college player who lacks NBA ability. He is just too slow to guard anyone, his handle is average or below (I'd say below), tends to be streaky as a shooter, and can't create for himself or others. He is to be commended for maximizing his skills on the college level. I'm rooting for him and at times think up scenarios of that right team with great offensive stars who gets doubled and at times tripled teamed, where Buddy can be the spot up shooter; and that team would have great defense to make up for him lacking in that area. Buddy is not as big or skilled as Duncan Robinson who has fell out of Miami's rotation and I doubt will ever be the player he was a year or two ago. The game keeps changing and as someone noted in an earlier post, there are a lot of guys now who are athletic and defensive oriented who shoots the three very well ( 3 and D). There are so many of these types available and coming out of college each year, so why bother with a streaky 3 point specialist who brings nothing else to the table? He seems to be likeable and the kind of guy you root for (plus he's the son of a legendary coach) so I can see at most a 2 way contract that really will lead to nowhere. Hopefully, he won't waste his good years knocking about in the G or D League like Fair, Arinze and other solid college players and wisely go overseas and make some real money while he can.

Solid post.
