Burn it all down. This is rock bottom

Hop left in 2017. we were in the ACC 4 seasons before he left. He was largely responsible for bringing all key players for the 2016 team in.

Last I checked paying players is legal now.

And we don’t have to limit it to Pitino. We could find other coaches who could do a better job than JB right now. At best JB is a C minus coach right now.

He couldn’t even get the team to play hard the other night, but yes playing hard is on conference affiliation smh.
You proved my point. Hop could not recruit for us in the ACC.

I'll put it in another way. This summer I purchased a somewhat expensive sports car. I visited several dealers with salesmen in expensive settings some labeled as international representatives. They had their pitches why there brand was the best. I made my decision based on what I wanted and the price. The salesman was unimportant compared to the product that was being offered.

What is being sold is more important than who sells it. We used to sell The Beast of the East. Now we sell the least of the Southeast.

One more perspective. Duke and the Heels have new coaches but their product, kings of the ACC, sells itself.

Wrong again.

This is a terrible analogy and I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you just wanted to brag about recently buying a sports car.

People hated Gross, but the AD was on fire when he was here. Coyle got the benefit of that, but Gross was a great AD for hiring coaches.
He hired Robinson. That alone places him as worst AD in SU history.

I'm no recruiting expert, but it seems like the first thing you are selling is the coaching staff. Now to even be in the conversation, you have to be at a certain stature of program but being a known brand name, being on TV, and being in a Power 5 conference, I think we are basically covered there. Now, what about the coaching are you selling? Seems like first is personal relationship. Do they like you? Do they want to be around you and be associated with you? Next is prowess. What are your bona-fides, track record, etc?

Next would be the compensation package. This may actually be #1 now as long as your other items are at least not show stoppers.

So selling the coaching staff is huge and clearly JB is not really interested, or really capable of selling in the modern way. He gets big points for the prowess category but that can't outweigh his very low score for personal relationship. It is clear from most former players that there is a good personal relationship eventually, but he isn't apparently very interested in convincing players of that upfront like he needs to be to recruit modern players.

Anyway that is my uninformed opinion.

I’m not in favor of age discrimination, but maybe 78 years old is too old to continue to coach college athletics. You not only have to know the game in and out, you also have to be able to relate to teenagers.

Every recruiter is a salesman. Have you ever heard of a kid having a bad visit? Every recruiter wants to be your best friend. N Carolina and Duke could be coached by Atilla the Hun and still out-recruit us in the ACC

If recruiting was all about kids feelings towards the coach, small schools would be on equal footing with the elite schools. The most important factor is the prestige of the school.

Our MOJO as Beast of the East along with our rivalries propelled our recruiting. We no longer have them as selling points. I don't expect recruits to choose us based on some charm initiative or a personable new coach.

Babers is personable but he cannot get enough talent. I do not forsee a magic pill for basketball. On the bright side, the cash is good for strengthening other sports and football would have died without the ACC

This is simply not true. You’re suggesting we live in a world where programs always recruit at the same level and the people involved have no impact. That is obviously and demonstrably false.

Yep...You just have to look at USC Football for one of many examples.

nothing changed about the positives/negatives of USC overnight except the coach. Who proceeded to bring an all star team with him

For sure. Or the complete reversal of fortune between Clemson and Florida State football in the past decade. Or several dozen different hoops programs.

There is no coming back from getting blown out by Colgate two years in a row, and there is not one conceivable advantage that Colgate athletics has over Syracuse. This should not be happening.
Coach K and Roy Williams should call JB and have a heart to heart talk with him. Maybe his peers can get through to him about the elephant(s) in the room that we all see.

Meh, both sides are right. The Coach and the Product both matter a lot for recruiting. AlaskaSU is correct that it was easier to recruit when we were Beast of the Big East. How could it not be? That isn't to say we should not have moved to the ACC. We clearly should have. But since moving over we have largely become the Bell & Howell of the conference, a former big name that is now kept around just for it's intellectual property power while offering a sub-par product. That can't help recruiting, it just can't.

The new staff will change that asap
