C William Kyle (NE) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (3/27/25)

Look at it this way. If the numbers I and a few others are hearing about our NIL/house settlement available dollars is true/close he’s getting about 7% of it. Is that out of line for a kid with potential who’s had success at a lower level? I don’t know.

If its 7%, that's fair, its reasonable. I guess its hard to fully assess transactions when we don't know, and will never know from an absolute perspective, all the financial sides of the equation when it comes to the NCAA. (team and player)

We live in a salary cap world in pro-sports, where the cap is known, and everybody's salaries are disclosed by the CBA. Just a lot more mystery when it comes to the NCAA.

I do think its crazy that higher end NCAA role players (and its not exclusively a Kyle thing here) who only have a small chance of ever being good enough to earn a 2 way contract in the NBA. will actually earn more in the NCAA than a player with a two-way contract in the NBA (60 contracts around $600K each).

NIL keeps players in college. If only they could get more player continuity figured out (but that could be a pipe dream)

NIL does work to keep more player in college as juniors and seniors. If only they could get the continuity figured out (but that might be a pipe dream)
This is a huge benefit to college sports, even guys like Donnie Freeman can probably make more money at Syracuse or other P4 schools than they will for a few years after being drafted.

The answer is easy. Allow for multi year NILs.

We're grasping at straws.

Kyle is Orange now (if that even means anything in the NIL world) so I hope he kills it and I will cheer for his success. But our talent level is so far gone from where we've been, and these types of kids are not close to making us competitive again.

This is all subjective, but in my opinion, "love this pick up" is a bit much.

I can picture Kline calling for Scott Hatteberg and Red not playing him, until one day he does.

They could make a movie about it. Call it Moneyball 2.
Ugh, Hatteberg. The movie made a career 101 OPS+ hitter with a lifetime WAR of 10 over 14 seasons into a hero.

Let me speak for all Red Sox fans when I sat that no one ever missed Scott Hatteberg.

:)

Context matters. If Kyle is slotted to be a backup 4/5 -- who's job is to defend, rebound and dunk -- then "love" is a perfectly fine assessment.

To continue with my Red Sox references, I love having David Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez on the bench, because they're solid bats, strong gloves, and have multi-positional ability. I wouldn't love them getting 600 plate appearances, but that's not their role.

10 minutes per game for a 7 seed.

If we want to be a 7 seed, there’s your comparison.

Hope I’m wrong - unimpressed.
It depends on what they get with the rest of their money

We aren't going to get proven transfers everywhere

If everyone is a shot in the dark, have at it

I never watched the movie but zito Hudson and Mulder mattered a lot more

Yes I understand that.

The supporting cast matters a lot.

I don't trust this staff to evaluate and make decisions on the roster. When I see it, I'll believe it. Which is why I am going under the assumption that a 9.3 mpg player for a 7 seed is going to start for us next year. And I am not a fan of that.

How do we think they are budgeting the cash?
$300K for PG
JJ
$250K for a wing
Donnie
$8m for Centers
Ah yes, similar to the Utah Jazz cap management the one season when they gave Rudy Gobert a supermax AND had Derrick Favors as the most expensive backup 5 in the NBA AND completely unnecessarily drafted Udoka Azuibuike even though they needed 3 and D wings and Desmond Bane and Jayden McDaniels WERE SITTING RIGHT THERE NO I'M NOT STILL BITTER OR UPSET BY THIS WHY DO YOU ASK

A lot to like there, he will be fun. Running, dunking, crashing down the lane off a pick, wicked quick spin moves and plasticman like rim shakers, and 5th row Spaulding burgers.

Some of those clips though…by gawd has the entire basketball world forgotten how to play defense?

What am I missing? He’s averaged a block a game for his career to this point and wasn’t a major shot blocker at SDSU.

Definitely better than what we’ve had in that regard but is he really a big time shot blocking presence, especially at 6’9”? I love the athleticism so that should help.

He only weighs 215, and his best year was 1.6 blocks against the Summit League. We need a guy who weighs at least 240-250 for the other center.

He looked bigger than 215 to me.
