Coach Search Options after Autry

I have it on good authority that the university, in conjunction with its renowned marketing department, is going to make a major announcement regarding the head men’s basketball coaching position very soon.

The day after the Pitt game, on March 3rd, the plan is to announce that Red Autry will not be returning in 2026-27.

The following day, and continuing in 14 day increments, they will release the surname of the new hire ONE letter at a time, culminating with the third letter reveal on April 1st.

Anybody who is dyslexic should proceed with the utmost caution.
Imagine lol

The best of both worlds would be Hodgson as HC and give HOP a promotion from where he is now to associate HC. Don't know if Hodgson would go for it, but if he would, tons of support and an excellent Head Coach.
If he could get a $30+ M dollar budget he absolutely would. But I doubt Hop would …

...and then reading about him being Melos choice...

my theory:

Kiyan cant cover anyone 1 on 1...he needs zone...hop is a zone coach...

IF you need a zone coach...who else would you get for Cuse?
Gallo from Merrimack

Reading this thread today and seeing that Lyke and Hopkins both have great chances of being the AD and HC have almost made me want to cry. I wish I was kidding, but that’s how bad I’d feel if they’re hired.
I felt this way too a few days ago. Trying to tell myself that it would be very hard to miss the tourney with the budget that was thrown out earlier, but long term I think this is an awful move as I expect the money to dry up over time especially if Hop is doing less with more which is a fair assumption.

As for Lyke, definitely disappointing. A bit head scratching why Lally is backing her

Since we’re all having fun with hypotheticals.

Would the bot decisionmakers have picked 39 year old unproven Fran Brown 2 years ago if he was interviewing against the equivalent of a Mike Hopkins type hire with the same larger bankroll and former player support?

My gut tells me that Fran Brown would’ve never set foot in the dome and the Mike Hopkins type football HC would’ve been hired before Babers had a chance to pack up his office.

Commonality between both:

Fran brought his own bag of $$ too.

This isn't a political situation where we can throw the vice president at one of these guys. There will be a winner and a second place. They won't be working together.

Well, I think we would all agree that the talent level he has is not even in the same stratosphere as SU.
Doty could succeed at SU, but that is about it.
I think most who have actually watched GMAC coach this year would agree that he seems to have the goods to be a good coach. He makes in game changes, his teams play hard and fight and his team actually seems to have an identity. Watch his press conferences - he actually sounds like a head coach.
I also think if you make Red the head coach at Siena there is no way Siena would be sniffing 20 wins, be second in their conference only two years removed from having 4 wins and finishing last in their conference.
yeah totally. not grading candidates on a curve (depending on where theyre at is ludicrous)

gmac is in a 1 bid league...people demanding he makes the tourney and makes noise there first are wild

hop made the tourney 1 time in 7 seasons at a major conference school!

He was. But only one of those 2 teams made the NCAAT, which shows how much they were valued. And after that he went 70-84. So yeah, a complete flop.
Eh, Kenny Payne was a complete flop. Hop seems like some good, some bad, some bad luck.

I think you might be focusing on the wrong question. A better question might be: could Hodgson beat the Duke, UNC, Virginia, Louisville teams once he's implemented his system, and gotten system fits, as a long-term program transformation.

Not worried so much about performance being optimized in year 1. But the footprint needs to be in place, to set the table for future sucess.

Faith without evidence is unnecessary here -- because he's shown his ability to elevate teams not once, but twice, in short order.
Again, not focusing on any question at all. Simply making the point that there is no empirical evidence that Hodgson would be the can’t miss, sure fire thing some are portraying him to be. If he gets the gig I certainly hope he is, but until then I am willing to accept the possibility that there may be other qualified candidates.

Basketball program on life support and the university thinks Lyke at AD and Hop coaching is the answer!? Someone needs to talk some sense into the BoT before it’s too late.
A failed AD and a failed head coach! Both fired from their previous jobs for poor performance. What could possibly go wrong?!?

How about we hire a coach where you don't have to do a bunch of hypotheticals in order to convince yourself that he *could* be good. I mean JFC this really isn't that difficult.

Hodgson wins. Hire the guy who wins.

Well that would be way to easy. Syracuse can't do that.

"We did a national search and Mike Hopkins was the best person to lead this program into the future"

I still can't wrap my head around Melo drumming up so much cash from whoever it is he is courting, and then thinking Hop is what is best for his son and Syracuse. And these benefactors, why are they potentially so heavily involved/invested in Hop? Do they blindly trust Melo? Just wild to me.

If Hop was at another school, having success and this was just trying to get a top coach back home, then it makes sense. But Hop is an assistant in the NBA for a crap franchise with little college HC success and no intrigue nationally.

Wouldn't Melo want his son in a proven offensive system with the ability to build his NBA resume from there? Can't he see the 1-on-1 nature of this season's offense is not going to go well!?

Just makes it seem Melo has no idea what is best for his son's basketball future and only wants him playing for a friend. That is probably harsh and even wrong, but that's what this appears to be.
Pump the brakes a bit. Even if we accept the premise that Melo is ponying up huge sums, there is nowhere but here making the leap that it’s contingent on Hop getting the job before the formal process has even started.

“And we had to act fast because colleges have been beating down Hops door. We couldn’t risk letting him get away to another school after his success at UW”

I am pretty confidant that it is. I hope and wish what you are implying is or was true. But I think personalities are involved here. And people wanting to win. And not on the basketball court. Let's put it this way, if the money wasn't just tied to Hopkins, this would be a ridiculously easy choice.
