If this goes down the Hop / Lyke’s path, then SU could be sending the community a message that the school will be on the outside of any conference re-alignment and will be seeing its revenue severely curtailed. Accordingly, the teams will be in some league involving Wake, BC, Pitt, Temple, GT, UConn, Army, Navy, UMass. Feels like this could be the beginning of the downsizing for this eventuality. They gave it a run but you can only shovel sh-t against the tide for so long. Sorry to be such a gloomy gus but I cannot get my head wrapped around why this path would make long term sense other than the white flag is being waved. (Too bad all that parking around Manley has been destroyed as I cannot imagine how men’s and women’s basketball can even be moved back at this point….I guess the games will be played in the War Memorial)

This has BOT drama and intrigue for sure...

Let's not forget, the Lally's essentially got AW jettisoned from support and he was essentially told his money was no good here, go away.

AW is not Melo by any stretch, but I have little doubt that if the Lally's want their way, they will be flexing muscle to get it.
They are. But like you said, Melo isn't AW. Who I believe is on team Melo.

I want to make this clear: I don’t want Mike Hopkins as the next coach, and I’m all in on BH. However, I do have a question for the insiders on here: in terms of the $30 million+ supposedly coming with Hopkins if he’s hired as HC, how much of that would purely go towards roster construction?
That number is all for nil

Yup I have been saying that this 30+ million and push for Hopkins isn't coming so Kiyan can be bench or play 10 minutes a game and not be featured. There will be 100% strings attached. We always joked we run our basketball program like an AAU team, not it will not be just like that with parents paying for their kids' playing time.
I have actually been told today that that would not be the case. That Hopkins would make it clear that the best guys play. Period. End of story. That is what I was told just today.

So the best I can discern is that we have a real mess on our hands.

Behind the scenes, there are power struggles taking place for all three positions currently open. Chancellor, AD and MBB.

There seem to be competing factions at each position, and there seems to be a clear direction for what I would say is “Team Lally”…which appears to be involved in all three.

Their slate of candidates appear to be:
Chancellor Haynie
AD Lyke
Coach Hodgson
(The last two for sure, not sure about Haynie)

They are opposed on Lyke by some very influential FB supporters.

And they are opposed on Hodgson by Team Melo.(Hop)
Melo will not be outspent here.

I don’t know how this is all going to fall out, but I think Haynie is going to be a winner here.

The AD situation is too close to call.

As is the MBB coach.

The overarching picture here is the Lally’s attempt to consolidate control. I don’t think they’re going to stop until the school is renamed Lally University @ Syracuse.

Let’s just say their name above Melo’s on the basketball facility has been “duly noted”.

I think a Hop - Lyke result would be somewhat of a potential compromise.

As Dash has noted, I don’t see anyway the Lally’s support Hop, nor Melo supports Hodgson.
I liked it because you did a good job with the analysis that’s all. The main key here is Melo and Hodgson. Does Kiyan not fit what Hodgson does?

Sounds like wealthy people acting like wealthy people. The Lyke stuff makes no sense given her history. She must kill it at cocktail parties.

That compromise is horrible.

If this is the situation what is the problem with Lyke? I don’t know, so just asking. I mean I’d rather have a coach who can coach hoop than a great AD. The AD only needs to take care of football, MBB, and mlax. Whatever else happens, who cares. Sorry if i offend others in other sports but those are the ones people care about.

Well, Dash, did you expect Hop to tell people “yeah, I’m gonna give Kiyan free rein?”

Laughing because of the situation, Melo is getting Hop 30 plus million dollars and they are not sure if Kiyan will start. If this is about investing in Syracuse Basketball in general and not really Kiyan, this should be a long term thing then.

Why hasn't Hop gotten another HC job since Washington?
Espn Syracuse will tell you because other schools knew he was eventually gonna get the SU job so they didn't bother. That was the response to why Autry wasn't pursued for lower level head coaching jobs.

Seems to me Lallys want people in there they can control. They can’t tell me they are serious about sports and hire lykes.

This feels spot on tbh. As I said Lyke might have the position, but she has zero leverage and influence in the big picture.

FWIW, Melo's history with head coaches is checkered, to say the least.

Had a lot of success in Denver with George Karl, but then decided he couldn't play for him anymore.

Forced the trade to the Knicks where he promptly burned through Mike D'Antoni, Mike Woodson, Derek Fisher and Jeff Hornacek.

Then was a journeyman the rest of his career.

I love Melo for all he has done for SU. And he's one of the all-time great scorers. But he doesn't know what makes a great coach or how to run an elite college basketball program. Money is one aspect of that, but there are many, many other aspects.
How dare you? I always laugh too when people talk about his college experience at cuse as some big long thing.

He did it all in 6 months time then it was celebrate and then the draft ha. Like a semesterish of school.

I am thinking that there is more to this situation than Kiyan. And I won't say anymore on that.

Wayne Morgan had a good career. He, like Hop, was an excellent recruiter. He took over as head coach after Larry Eustachy was let go because of scandal after being his assistant. He led Iowa St to an NCAA tournament bid and a NIT bid in 2 of his 3 seasons there. He had a 55-39 record at Iowa St. Creightons Greg McDermott followed him as head coach at Iowa St and left with a 59-68 record before heading to Creighton. Before Iowa St, Morgan was head coach of Long Beach St and had a 175-91 head coaching record there.
91-84 at Long Beach State according to your link

Hey, that's Brian Kelly territory.

Right TerryD

They are. But like you said, Melo isn't AW. Who I believe is on team Melo.

No, but mebbs melo gets his building back when Lally pulls the plug on the the rest of the 25 mill that hasn't already been committed/transferred?

I mean both sides have a big stack of comparable chips in the game, is all I am saying.

Will the Lallys play the game to full ante and call?

Game of chicken/do REALLY want their way, etc...

You might be missing the big picture here. Our next A.D. and JW was perfect for this, is going to be important in the next round of realignment. I don't think Lyke can help us one bit.

I think he did a pretty good job. We were more held back by the two guys that we kept. One got hurt when we needed him most and the other had erratic play. Kingz was an excellent addition. As was Kyle. Even Betsey for what we wanted of him. The miss was on the pt guard. And some of that might have been his usage.
I was watching UVA-NC State last night and they talked about the top 5 bench scorers in the conference. Betsey is 4th. I was kinda stunned to see him that highly ranked. Just reinforced how terrible Red’s playing time decisions have been.
