Coach Search Options after Autry

I went to watch Nevada basketball play New Mexico last night. A couple of observations: For the past five years Nevada has been either in the tournament or on the bubble. They get the most out of their players, they don’t have four and five star recruits. They beat New Mexico last night by playing relentless defense, and going after every rebound. They probably out rebounded New Mexico by 10. I didn’t look at the stats, but I think they are rebounded Utah State also by 10 the other day. When I watch the timeouts, Steve Alfred kind of walks over to the referees and he talks to the referees and the assistant coach Craig Neil, who used to be a coach at New Mexico and took them to the NCAA tournament and finished a season ranked 17th frequently runs the huddle. He’s frequently standing, yelling directions, all the assistants are up, shouting out directions. They play hard, and the players play good solid aggressive defense. Great ball movement.

The coaching staff at Syracuse is HOT GARBAGE. If Syracuse had the same players that they have right now, and Nevadas coaching staff…they win a lot of games. One more thing, I was telling my friend that the shooting guard on Syracuse shoots 50% from the free-throw line, he looked at me like I was crazy…. and it is crazy. How do you have a shooting guard on a power five team that cannot shoot a free throw? Unbelievable.

In consultation with my life coach, this thread has caused me to up my Hogan's Heroes episodes from once a day to twice a day. Heck, I'm thinking of augmenting with a Petticoat Junction.
Send help! Or Jay Wright.

Thank heavens that Hodgson actually wants the job enough that he’s actually entertaining this poop show. That’s kind of amazing in itself. A lot of candidates might run screaming from this.
I’m guessing this whole mess is the exact thing some of our insiders were insinuating when they said there wasn’t as much interest fo this job as one would think.

Just want it on the record that I was part of both the Mullen & Red threads for posterity’s sake! Nothing else to contribute, just hoping for the best when the smoke clears. Thanks insiders for the insight. Always an Orange fan regardless…
Michael Graham's Punch on the record.

My thoughts for prosperity and future me -

1) It better be Hodgson
2) It better not be Heather Lyke
3) #2 is more important than #1

This is going to cost us Fran if we don't find an off ramp, isn't it?

Either because the new AD doesn't support football or other reasons.

That would be tragic. Fran changed the culture of SU sports. Students line up to meet him. Players from other teams want to be around him. Fran helped me reconnect with everything I love about Syracuse. I started giving again because of Fran Brown.

Fran is everything right and true in a leader of young men. $30m can't buy what he can bring to SU and CNY. Do not chase him off. Please. I’m begging.

If all of this is true, what a circus this is. If they go with Lyke the university deserves every single thing that comes its way as a result. Clown show.

I don't have time to read 15 more pages since yesterday morning. Who wants to write up the daily cliff notes report

If it's any consolation, I think we are going to mess up the A.D. search even worse.
We need more enojis. Just pretend that red face I gave is actually green...with more green projectile from the mouth.

I think he is a very good coach and someone I would definitely think about! Has won two conference championships with two different teams in two different conferences. He is a winner! Someone is going to be very happy when they hire him in my opinion.
Chesney 2.0

If this goes down the Hop / Lyke’s path, then SU could be sending the community a message that the school will be on the outside of any conference re-alignment and will be seeing its revenue severely curtailed. Accordingly, the teams will be in some league involving Wake, BC, Pitt, Temple, GT, UConn, Army, Navy, UMass. Feels like this could be the beginning of the downsizing for this eventuality. They gave it a run but you can only shovel sh-t against the tide for so long. Sorry to be such a gloomy gus but I cannot get my head wrapped around why this path would make long term sense other than the white flag is being waved. (Too bad all that parking around Manley has been destroyed as I cannot imagine how men’s and women’s basketball can even be moved back at this point….I guess the games will be played in the War Memorial)
I’m fine w this if it’s the inevitable. We can be a great regional power again.

UConn went a bowl last year.

So the best I can discern is that we have a real mess on our hands.

Behind the scenes, there are power struggles taking place for all three positions currently open. Chancellor, AD and MBB.

There seem to be competing factions at each position, and there seems to be a clear direction for what I would say is “Team Lally”…which appears to be involved in all three.

Their slate of candidates appear to be:
Chancellor Haynie
AD Lyke
Coach Hodgson
(The last two for sure, not sure about Haynie)

They are opposed on Lyke by some very influential FB supporters.

And they are opposed on Hodgson by Team Melo.(Hop)
Melo will not be outspent here.

I don’t know how this is all going to fall out, but I think Haynie is going to be a winner here.

The AD situation is too close to call.

As is the MBB coach.

The overarching picture here is the Lally’s attempt to consolidate control. I don’t think they’re going to stop until the school is renamed Lally University @ Syracuse.

Let’s just say their name above Melo’s on the basketball facility has been “duly noted”.

I think a Hop - Lyke result would be somewhat of a potential compromise.

As Dash has noted, I don’t see anyway the Lally’s support Hop, nor Melo supports Hodgson.
Another posted and I had floated the compromise idea also. The compromise being (as I interpert it) as the Lally's get Lyke and Melo's side gets Hop and hope everyone is happy with a little of what they want.

What could go wrong?

Well how are you going to hire a basketball coach who was fired by Washington a couple of years ago and hasn't been a head coach since or involved with college basketball at all?
When you can hire a basketball coach who wasn't wanted at their last head job and top it off with an AD in the same situation, I don't see how you turn down that opportunity! (is italics still the sarcasm font?)

I’m amazed by 200 plus pages and very little mention of James Arthur Boeheim.

Is it remotely possible that the guy with the largest mouth in CNY hasn’t leaked to his national boys who he wants. Is he that pot committed to red Autry to the bitter end?

This entire situation is classic Syracuse.

Who is?

If you had your way JAB would still be coaching.
None of the discussed candidates are. That’s my whole point. . That’s why I am not limiting myself to one of them until the process plays out.

And not JAB. I’m a Roy Danforth guy DA.

I might be the only one here but I could care less about the AD. They come and go. As far as I care we should pay Lyke next to nothing and then when the school realizes the mistake she can easily be dumped for cause.
Maybe that’s how it is now but Daryl Gross
