Coach Search Options after Autry

Is the fact they are now supporting Hop with $30 mil, for 2 years now an indication this option is likely happening?

i.e. They have been told from the admin to get out there and sell it??

Even if it is you are not hiring the best coach you can, you are hiring a coach because the boosters are telling you who to hire.

Nobody has brought up one thing from an actual coaching standpoint that Hopkins does well; all the talk revolves around 30 million, nothing about coaching.

He then said you give Hop a 2 year contract, if he wins he stays, if he doesnt you find the next

You know what? He can't really turn it down. Like Richard Gere in an officer and a gentleman, he has nowhere else to go. What? He is going to turn it down? It would be a lot of money at 56 years of age and if he does have 30 million at his disposal, what more could he ask for?

Not me. I would be very curious to see how it turns out and I'm sure I would watch some BC games but I would be very happy and prefer if Syracuse got Hodgson instead.

This mindset is completely irrelevant today, unfortunately. Every season is independent of any other season. There’s no building a program when you have a different team every year with very little continuity. Players hardly stay more than a season or two.

The positive side of this is we could put together a national championship level team next year with the right coach, players, and resources (e.g. NIL).

That's certainly true at Syracuse but it's not true everywhere:

I do agree that it no longer takes as long to build programs, but to say that is not possible to have any stability is not true. The programs that have figured out how to have significant stability are also not the ones spending most on NIL in my estimation.

Not me. I would be very curious to see how it turns out and I'm sure I would watch some BC games but I would be very happy and prefer if Syracuse got Hodgson instead.

Depending on who Syracuse hired I would feel like we dodged a bullet in the long run.

Not to mention, we just tried the same thing -- hiring an unproven internal guy, with a couple of red flags.

Turns out, the guy we hired wasn't just subpar, he ended up being arguably the worst P4 coach.

So why potentially try to do the same thing -- i.e., hire a coach with red flags, who showed that his offense and defensive systems were awful at UW, and try to throw money at the problem -- and hope for a different result?

You nailed it -- if a coach needs a staff of more qualified assistant coaches and a boatload of money to overcome their inherent limitations, then said coach is the wrong candidate to consider.

Something that strikes me about Hodgson that has been under-discussed is the makeup of his staff. His three assistants and one of his Associate HCs at USF are all 40 or younger, and the other is a special assistant with more experience and strong CNY ties (Tobin Anderson). I think that's a great reflection of how leadership in basketball (and all sports, for that matter) is evolving.

In today's game you have to have staffers who can relate and communicate effectively with players as well as their fellow staff. As an Oats disciple, I don't think Hodgson struggles with analytics, but if he were to bring his staff to SU I think they would put him in a great position to succeed because it sounds like while he has his own style he's open to new information that can help sharpen it.

It shouldn't have been Hop either, and we're not doing any sort of blueprint for success, if so.

When Hop fails, we'll be ready to hire Gerry next (tho, if he's lucky, he won't want to hitch his wagon to where we are going at that point.)

Rinse, repeat.

By that time, we'll likely be moving to a tertiary non-P4 conference, and struggling with the financial implications of that conference downgrade too...

Poor leadership and successive, repeated bad major athletics decisions will have real consequences. If there was any time in our history where we HAVE to make the right decisions, it's now and into the next 5 years...

Time to buckle in... Rock bottom may be nowhere in sight.

Melo was a Hall of Fame player. That doesn't mean he knows what makes a great coach, or how to run a college basketball program.

I've been clear that I don't know much about Hodgson or if he'd be a good hire for SU. I'm not stuck on him at all.

However, I don't "trust that proper due diligence and an effective process will be followed". Not given the current rudderless state of SU leadership.

I laid out what an executive-level hiring process for this program should be dozens of pages ago, and I've yet to see any evidence that's being followed. Sounds a lot more like Game of Thrones.

Never watched the show or read the books. Which character would JB be?
