Coach Search Options after Autry

What if...what you need AND want is $30M regardless of what Coach must to be attached to that $$$? Does it matter if the coach is "correct" IF the real goal is the $30M? Is that number so big that "they" can't turn it down no matter the coach attached to making that happen? That's the fear for me.

To be crystal clear, I am not saying this is the case. And this is not meant as an endorsement of going with Hop. Nor is this a justification for taking the money and worrying later (even though I do think that is short sighted). Just offering a different perspective.

I don't know if that is a different perspective, per say because that is the actual perspective. We have to hire a terrible coach because that is who the people giving the money want. Not because he is a good coach. Not because he has a history of winning. Not because the people giving the money have a long track record of making smart basketball decisions. Just because of they are the ones giving the money and that seems to be the only focus not actually coaching acumen.

Those "burner accounts" as you call them are boosters and SU alums who have shared info here for almost 30 years.
Yeah, but think about it. Wouldn't those posters with 25 years+ of providing information be the perfect cover for self proclaimed insiders who lie, make up or spread unverified rumors to rile up the fanbase for their personal enjoyment?

The OP has been here for less than 2 years and he/she has already see through this charade.

How I see the 30 million dollars Hopkins only deal

I’m investing in sunglasses because SU’s future is BRIGHT under MIKE HOPKINS!!!!!
I also believe Hopkins will make the tournament, it might not be until the tourney is expanded to 128 teams but he'll get us there eventually.

Seriously though whatever coach we end up with if we can't make a 76 team tournament next year there shouldn't even be a year 2 for the guy.

I share that fear.

And also the fear that Kiyan will be gone after year 2, and so will that influx of money beyond the immediate short term, and we'll be left with the coach.
where is he going after year 2? I think it is much more likely that he is here 4 years than 2 unless he transfers to another school

So if Hop signs for 2 years and doesn't work we have to pay Gerry and give him 4. Where do we go from there? Do we know if Buddy Boeheim will be ready to coach.

That's kind of where I'm at, too.

JB himself has gone on record after stepping down that he didn't adapt certain parts of his system toward the end to align with the modern college game. He was also an exponentially better X's and O's coach than anyone on his coaching tree. Even so, the results tangibly slipped at the end, over a multi-year span. Despite that, they made a continuity hire because some BoT members and prominent donors wanted to hang onto the past.

And Red flopped, trying to admittedly do different stuff than JB, but with disastrous results on both sides of the ball.

And now a subset of the BoT and donors are pushing Hopkins, even though he showed poor systems on both sides of the ball at UW.

At some point, when are we going to stop trying to do the same things and hope for a different result? What is the hang up with just hiring the best coach we can, instead of constraining ourselves -- ESPECIALLY when the internal candidates are all lacking, to various degrees?

And I think you probably meant it in jest -- but if prominent alums have set their sights on Hop after the Red debacle, then it stands to reason that Gerry would be their NEXT "solution."

This program desperately needs an infusion of new blood / new ideas. Not marching out the same 'ol same 'ol to see if shiz sticks against the wall this time.

Dash he just played a full year, where is getting an extra year from? He only has 3 max left, and that really doesn’t change much about this topic IMO.

I would love to be these peoples financial advisor

They seem willing to burn their money on any investment

How did they hear about the 30M but lally has no idea? Someone is lying. Those are mutually exclusive. If it’s Lally in the end who was the liar then I’ll eat crow and apologize but until then I’m going to trust the horses mouth directly over burner accounts on a public fan forum that could enjoy riling up the fanbase
What poster that is talking about the 30 million is in favor of Hopkins as the next coach? And if there isn't one, what would be their motivation to lie about it? Next, Lally does have a motivation to lie about the 30 million. If for once, he is being outbid for a project at Syracuse. Or, being kinder, Melo's side would have no reason to tell Lally what they were doing to get their guy. I don't know if the 30 million is real or not. As has been said, it is a lot easier to get someone to say they are going to donate than it is to get someone to actually write a check. Finally, this board over the last 30 years have lost a lot of posters that gave information to the board because of exactly posters like you. I know that I have held back information because why do I want to deal with that crap.

I guess I’m taking the bait i dont know…. but are you just completely oblivious to the whole thing? It’s not some insane theory to think the lallys don’t know every single bit and detail of the opposing sides offerings, I’d argue it’s the expected thought process. Could it be a play from them? Sure but that’s not exactly what you’re presenting.

RF said that he might leave after year 2. It is very relevant. Where is he going after next year? That was my point. I think it is more likely he is here or in college for 4 years than it is him leaving after next year. If he is good enough to jump after next year, sign me up

I read what RF said as in two more years my fault. Yeah I have the same thoughts as you on that overall then.

Oh, I agree because of the limitations.

But I think the Melo camp believes differently. I think being featured year 2 was always the "plan," with a swift NBA jump ensuing.

FWIW, I also believe that Donnie's camp was also viewing him as a one or two year NBA jump -- but the play didn't warrant it.

Any concerns or thoughts on Hodgson having 0 HS recruits committed in this 26 class at USF?

He did fine scrambling to put together a roster last off season but a little surprised he has nothing at this point.

This thread has gotten long and confusing - at this point are Shertz and Hodgson not viable options? -if they look like dead ends are we looking at Calhoun's son?

Orange Nation floating the $30 million and saying thats a no brainer

Before that I said in the chat on that show if you need $30 million, thats to compensate for your coaching deficiencies and Paulie the clown immediately sees that and disputes it

He then said you give Hop a 2 year contract, if he wins he stays, if he doesnt you find the next

Im sure Hops agent will settle for 2 year deal

Two gifs. Syracuse can't compete at all financially and Syracuse will never return to the glory days. That's the narrative.

Nor the player development... which is why that isn't happening.

Walter Alston one year contracts.

The problem is the season tix renewals and dome home game attendances in that cycle ... They will be losing money hand over fist with each game under that premise of "Red is back". They've already have had to deal with that to a certain degree (and I am sure the bball home game event profitability books are not pretty) and they can't afford to lose a substantial more # of renewals and even sparser attended home games.

Maths.

Plus that ship has sailed and the buyout is queued.
I know this has been said before but dang, the fact that Red has a buyout leaves me with little faith that this is all going to end well.
