Coach Search Options after Autry

I understand money talks but dang I was really optimistic and genuinely excited for Hodgson and his explosive offense and the resurrection of cuse bball. If it is Hopkins, which it sounds like it will be, I just don't feel it. I'll support whomever it is, but man I'd be lying if I didn't say I had serious concerns with likelihood of a Hopkins led hoops transformation even with all this supposed influx of money.

That's kind of where I'm at, too.

JB himself has gone on record after stepping down that he didn't adapt certain parts of his system toward the end to align with the modern college game. He was also an exponentially better X's and O's coach than anyone on his coaching tree. Even so, the results tangibly slipped at the end, over a multi-year span. Despite that, they made a continuity hire because some BoT members and prominent donors wanted to hang onto the past.

And Red flopped, trying to admittedly do different stuff than JB, but with disastrous results on both sides of the ball.

And now a subset of the BoT and donors are pushing Hopkins, even though he showed poor systems on both sides of the ball at UW.

At some point, when are we going to stop trying to do the same things and hope for a different result? What is the hang up with just hiring the best coach we can, instead of constraining ourselves -- ESPECIALLY when the internal candidates are all lacking, to various degrees?

And I think you probably meant it in jest -- but if prominent alums have set their sights on Hop after the Red debacle, then it stands to reason that Gerry would be their NEXT "solution."

This program desperately needs an infusion of new blood / new ideas. Not marching out the same 'ol same 'ol to see if shiz sticks against the wall this time.

I think part of Red's problem is he doesn't seem to have command of the team. It's like he's not 'really' in charge.

With JB you knew who was in charge. There were no BS substitution patterns. By and large he would play kids who were hot or limited mistakes or made the right plays, he would ask Jack kids who were not. There wasn't much charity. Hence the term boeheimed.

( I'm sure the haters will bring up all the exceptions but this is how it was the majority of the time spanning his career not just some of the crap we saw the last few years with a couple chosen ones.)

Anyhow Red is soft and comes across as a pushover and I think it shows in the effort we see from his team.

I call it Red’s toxic positivity

if you are going to criticize anyone, you pick me for correctly showing that success isn't always immediate? in any landscape or any era.

instead of picking the morons (not just IthacaMatt FYI) who think a national search somehow means a better chance of wins?

it isnt that hard to grasp.
I didn't pick you for anything; I made a general comment. If you want to go after Matt, go for it.

Any concerns or thoughts on Hodgson having 0 HS recruits committed in this 26 class at USF?

He did fine scrambling to put together a roster last off season but a little surprised he has nothing at this point.

He might not expect to be there long. What he needs he can get in the portal, or has returning.
HS kids, unless they have an obvious elite skill or physical advantage, are just for filling out rosters these days.

Because we're at the point where doing the right thing and going outside the family for the best hire possible is FINALLY here.

So doing the wrong thing again to keep it in the family requires extra-stupid measures, like a massive money and NIL bag to justify hiring an in-house, poor candidate... also, they think they can sell that to the fans.
One of the best responses EVER

Totally agree

Mookie Jones is coaching high school basketball, maybe he wants to move up a level? We should make sure to interview him
Great point. I know Billy Edelin used to train kids too.. here’s my wish list for next coach lineup:

Center: Sean Williams the Cat Rescuer, and Dayshawn Wright
Forward: Mark Konecny, and Ethan Cole
Forward: Devin Brennan-McBride, and Greg Davis
Guard: Dior Johnson, and Jalen Carey
Guard: Josh Wright, and Kaleb Joseph
Bench: Dashonte Riley, Mike Jones, and James Theus

I haven’t been on this thread in a couple days - or maybe just a day! - but damn, things have changed suddenly. I cannot believe we are not going with Hodgson.

This is a great example of someone taking what someone said, creating their own perception and literally turning it into a definitive decision. Literally feed the masses with misinformation. Whether or not Coach Hopkins is hired or not. And then people provide likes wowza

Serious thought….it would strike me that some degree of Newhouse’s success can be traced to the arc of success of SUMBB from the 1970s through the recent past. Newhouse grads had street cred as they came from a school that had a showtime atmosphere on game night for generations (and Manley was showtime too). If this is in fact true…the BOT and the University are putting one of their Crown Jewels at risk allowing this decision to become chaotic, undisciplined and a power struggle. If I am the BOT, I am strongly requesting (with economic incentives) that JW and HE stay two years to see this through…I just can’t believe all of these highly successful individuals as stewards of the institution are unable get control of the situation and make decisions in the best interests of the university.

I agree with you for the record firstly that the decisions should be more clear to just hire the best candidates. Wins and losses mean BH and def not Lyke.

I’m going to give some of my thoughts on what the board may be thinking or at least some of them.

College sports in general terms is a broken system. Week after week, month after month for years now crazier and crazier things have happened along with the quality of the sport going to the toilet.

It’s the Wild West and there is no end in sight. Legislation nope, common sense nope, NCAA = joke, and player collective bargaining years away.

I can see alot of the board just saying I don’t know what the crap to think or do so I’m just going with the safe choice. let’s be real BH altho the better candidate has not stayed anywhere more than a few years and has some unknowns.

The safe choice for the board for those that want to play it safe is the dude that spent 25+ years working for the program already.

Yup sucks for us wanting a change but I can see it coming like a freight train.

How does it sound like it’ll be Hopkins?

Hop’s first year in Washington he let his point guard shoot 189 three’s while making just 56(28%)

His second year Matisse Thybulle shot 46-151(30%)

The Isaiah Stewart team shot 22 3’s a game and shot 32%.

He has two guys shoot 4 threes a game that finished under 30% for the season on the team that went 5-21.

His 5th year they shot 31% as a team on 20 attempts. One guy shot 33%.

His sixth season once again he had one guy over 33% on 20 team attempts where they shot 31%.

His last season he had two guys take multiple attempts per game that were under 30%.

Just god awful shooting year after year after year. Please end this madness.

1000% this.

I'm still optimistic that sanity will prevail. Hopefully what's been shared here has been an object lesson for the powers that be in how badly Hop would be received at this time.

I'm really down on hiring Hopkins too but you are getting way ahead here, this is pure speculation.

I don’t get the Chris Mack love. The guy had one good year in 4 at Lville and got fired. 2017 is a long way away from when he had a great year at Xavier. I mean he coaches at college of Charleston now
Killed it at Xavier. First 2 years were tournament years at Lville (year 2 was Covid cancellation though), year 3 they were a surprise ncaa snub, then year 4 was it after the weird extortion thing with Dino Gaudio.

Not saying he’s my #1 but think he’s worthy of getting some high major interviews.
