Dash he just played a full year, where is getting an extra year from? He only has 3 max left, and that really doesn’t change much about this topic IMO.
Four years total which includes the current year. C'mon now.

I know this has been said before but dang, the fact that Red has a buyout leaves me with little faith that this is all going to end well.
Red has a buyout for up to two years. Bryan “the Shark” Hodgson aka Baby Shark aka The Guppy also has a meager buyout. Mike Hopkins has no buyout. Do you think our athletic department has the testicular fortitude to tackle two relatively small buyouts, especially when there is a boatload of money allegedly behind Mr. Hopkins????? To quote Al Borland: I don’t think so, Tim

The only guppy around here is you and your trolling.

What if...what you need AND want is $30M regardless of what Coach must to be attached to that $$$? Does it matter if the coach is "correct" IF the real goal is the $30M? Is that number so big that "they" can't turn it down no matter the coach attached to making that happen? That's the fear for me.

To be crystal clear, I am not saying this is the case. And this is not meant as an endorsement of going with Hop. Nor is this a justification for taking the money and worrying later (even though I do think that is short sighted). Just offering a different perspective.
Not really a different perspective. More like what most of us think the BOT is thinking.

he didn't have to recruit or people recruiting against him saying he won't be there

30 million a year you better be recruiting a team full of 1 and dones and be recruiting from the portal every year. And you'd better pray you did get enough during the year that most of your kids get drafted. In this model you will not be building anything just buying a new team every off season. Recruiting starts when the portal opens every year. :-)

Talking about Walter Alston, You don't know who he was , right Phil. Don't bother looking it up. Not important.

Any concerns or thoughts on Hodgson having 0 HS recruits committed in this 26 class at USF?

He did fine scrambling to put together a roster last off season but a little surprised he has nothing at this point.
May not want any, if you’re not getting to 30 out of high school you might as well just pound the portal

That's kind of where I'm at, too.

JB himself has gone on record after stepping down that he didn't adapt certain parts of his system toward the end to align with the modern college game. He was also an exponentially better X's and O's coach than anyone on his coaching tree. Even so, the results tangibly slipped at the end, over a multi-year span. Despite that, they made a continuity hire because some BoT members and prominent donors wanted to hang onto the past.

And Red flopped, trying to admittedly do different stuff than JB, but with disastrous results on both sides of the ball.

And now a subset of the BoT and donors are pushing Hopkins, even though he showed poor systems on both sides of the ball at UW.

At some point, when are we going to stop trying to do the same things and hope for a different result? What is the hang up with just hiring the best coach we can, instead of constraining ourselves -- ESPECIALLY when the internal candidates are all lacking, to various degrees?

And I think you probably meant it in jest -- but if prominent alums have set their sights on Hop after the Red debacle, then it stands to reason that Gerry would be their NEXT "solution."

This program desperately needs an infusion of new blood / new ideas. Not marching out the same 'ol same 'ol to see if shiz sticks against the wall this time.
I'm only half joking. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if they did this or something close. I think Hop and Red are similar in a good amount of ways. They are both really good guys that are good at recruiting but are not as good at system or at being the bad guy. They are assistants who tell the kid everything will be ok when JB gets on them. I will say having watched Hopkins up close in Seattle that when he had success a good amount of it was to do with his players playing hard for him and his energy rubbing off on players. He also inherited a few decent kids and the Pac-12 wasn't used to the zone and was filled with teams that had athletic guards who weren't great shooters. It played right into his hands and that is no longer the way college basketball is. I would be shocked if Hop doesn't do better than Red. So if they don't move on now why would they do it after some up and down years with Hop. I would be shocked if they didn't go to Gerry.

He should change his handle to SkankHunt44.

There was no edit. You didn't read the post I was responding to

I understand money talks but dang I was really optimistic and genuinely excited for Hodgson and his explosive offense and the resurrection of cuse bball. If it is Hopkins, which it sounds like it will be, I just don't feel it. I'll support whomever it is, but man I'd be lying if I didn't say I had serious concerns with likelihood of a Hopkins led hoops transformation even with all this supposed influx of money.

I think part of Red's problem is he doesn't seem to have command of the team. It's like he's not 'really' in charge.

With JB you knew who was in charge. There were no BS substitution patterns. By and large he would play kids who were hot or limited mistakes or made the right plays, he would ask Jack kids who were not. There wasn't much charity. Hence the term boeheimed.

( I'm sure the haters will bring up all the exceptions but this is how it was the majority of the time spanning his career not just some of the crap we saw the last few years with a couple chosen ones.)

Anyhow Red is soft and comes across as a pushover and I think it shows in the effort we see from his team.

I call it Red’s toxic positivity

if you are going to criticize anyone, you pick me for correctly showing that success isn't always immediate? in any landscape or any era.

instead of picking the morons (not just IthacaMatt FYI) who think a national search somehow means a better chance of wins?

it isnt that hard to grasp.
I didn't pick you for anything; I made a general comment. If you want to go after Matt, go for it.

He might not expect to be there long. What he needs he can get in the portal, or has returning.
HS kids, unless they have an obvious elite skill or physical advantage, are just for filling out rosters these days.

Because we're at the point where doing the right thing and going outside the family for the best hire possible is FINALLY here.

So doing the wrong thing again to keep it in the family requires extra-stupid measures, like a massive money and NIL bag to justify hiring an in-house, poor candidate... also, they think they can sell that to the fans.
One of the best responses EVER
