Coach Search Options after Autry

A couple of the right portal additions and I can see that program taking off. I live in the Capital Region and I think the Siena job is sneaky good. It's a great area and super convenient to a lot of fun places. I'm moving back to CNY soon because I have strong roots there, but otherwise I would be quite content here.

Hopefully they can schedule some high-majors next year and don't have the same issues as Miami (OH) this year on that front.
I don’t know dude. I’m in the capital region too and I don’t see a sports town here unless you like horseracing.

Maybe your experience is different but I don’t see Siena going anywhere. Albany in itself has fallen behind places even like Troy amd Schenectady nearby lately but I know they have money coming in to revitalize the downtown but still.

Gmac isn’t getting hired at a P5 school this year. There are many more accomplished coaches out there for them to choose from right now. Take your orange colored glasses off (I hate that phrase but I have to say it here). That said, I could see him getting an offer from a higher level mid-major in the A-10 or American, probably in the Northeast. But as others have said, if he leaves Siena, he’ll want good resources at the new school in order to compete.
Let’s see how he does. If he makes a run why not. He’s not a normal mid major coach. He’s a legend to the national media and will get plenty of outsized media if he catches lightening in a bottle

I wouldn’t bet against GMAC getting a P5 offer this year. He might sit for a year for a better offer, but that’s a dangerous bet. Siena might not be as good next year.

I agree that if GMac gets a chance to move up to a better conference and a better coaching position, he should take it. P4 or not. Should always keep trying to move up if offered.

It's a big jump up. But maybe a BC or Providence would consider it. Particularly given his known name and regional status..

Not much going on downtown, but the Arena is a professional facility. Historically, Albany just won't support a professional minor league team in any team for an extended period of time.

Amen. A bird in the hand folks…

Yeah- unless he has a specific vacancy expected to open up he would have an inside track on- you take that opportunity now if it presents itself. For instance BH was chasing the SU job already so going to USF made sense but maybe he goes after a bigger job if not for SU being very likely to to be available

Woj Bomb.
The SBU situation is certainly an interesting one. When Woj came on, he was adamant publicly that he worked for Schmidt. Turns out that relationship didn't quite work out that way. It looks like the SBU GM has way more power than basically any other GM in college hoops.

SBU also recently publicly stated that their entire athletics budget was $14M - with $4M of that being NIL (not mens' basketball NIL, NIL total. Although assuming that an overwhelming majority, if not all, is men's hoops.). Most SU insiders have said that this year's hoops team was around $8M (or more than half of the entire SBU athletics budget) and Duke's basketball NIL is around $20M.

It's a broken system. It will be interesting to see if more schools go with the model of the GM having way more say in everything, and almost more power than the HC.

Happy for Gerry, and he’s doing a really solid job at Siena, but people here are completely overestimating his stock.

Providence is going to be one of the best openings of the cycle. They are not hiring Gerry, and they won’t even give him a call. From what I know about BC, he’s not one of the names there right now either.

The next logical step for Gerry is probably an A-10 job.

No offense to Providence, but if that is one of the top jobs this cycle, it is a very, very down cycle.

Yes, if you’ve been following the cycle, people have been saying for months that unless we have some surprise retirements, it’s going to be a down year.

That being said, Providence, in the current state of the sport, is a much better job than some people here seem to think. They have a lot of NIL, and that’s attractive for any candidate.

While hardly the only thing you look at, as I mentioned before , how coaches manage success is important. How BH handles the American tournament as a favorite is something I want to see but so far he has his team only getting stronger down the stretch. Meanwhile Saint Louis has been a much less consistent team down the stretch after a great start on record pace for the school. Last year they bowed out early in the quarterfinals of their tourney and then got manhandled by BH’s Ark st team in the first round of the NIT. That Ark state squad lost in their conf tourney title game but finished strong besides that loss.

BH also has only 5 double digit losses over the past two years and not one of them was over 15 pts. Schertz has 7 over that same period including a few over 20 points.

Little nuggets of course but very curious how both handle these bigger games this year again. Saint Louis is playing like a team ripe to get sniped in the conf tourney.

I think he will stay at Siena for at least another two years.
I think he wants to build something there - win a regular season championship, make the NCAAT a bit,
win at least a first round game. Establish a culture that can endure after he leaves, assuming they make a decent hire.
Plus the fans love him there, his players love him, his family loves it there - I just cant see him chucking it all for the bonnies, or Providence or BC.

The one thing that I thought would always be a huge plus for him as a head coach is he can set the example.
He can walk the walk so to speak.
He isn't asking these kids to do anything more than he did as a player.
He worked his ass off, never ever gave up.
And they saw with him that he got results - because he put the work in and always hustled.
If he makes the NCAAT this year, his stock may never be higher and I have to imagine he jumps if offered (anything other than BC or buttgers). There’s just too much volatility and items that are outside your control in low majors to stick around if you don’t have to

Etan talking about AdamW and NIL Well, there is nothing stopping Adam from donating to NIL right now. He doesn't want that. He doesn't contribute to NIL. He wants his money to go where he wants it to go. That is his right. But the school isn't out of bounds in wanting it to regulate how their athletes are paid. Etan has his agenda. It doesn't always if ever mesh with what the University wants.

Also some solid jobs that are upgrades over Siena might not be open yet, depending on how the hiring cycle goes. For instanace if the smoke is true and Hodgson is all but locked in then the USF job would be open. So the basic list will adjust when the first round of hires are made, and there will be more options that are better opportunities than Siena.

I hear you about the NIL. At least in the near term. But PC has never been more than a middling BE program that could occasionally catch lightning in a bottle. Their fundamental challenges are and will still be there. I don’t think they will ever be the equal of even a lower tier P4 program in terms of attractiveness.

Siena has second most NIL in MAAC behind Iona. Makes the job attractable to stay at imo. G-MAC prolly feels like he can finish at top of the conference every year which would eventually lead him to a nice job. No need to rush to a Boston College type of school.

And GMAC has young kids. That matters too.

The history of the team holds little relevance anymore. This is the same reason why Syracuse isn’t considered the job we all want to believe it is.

If you invest in the team like they are nobody cares about the struggles in the past (before NIL). It’s a much better job than you’re giving it credit for.

I’m local too but haven’t seen anything recently. Did the idea for a semi-pro soccer team and stadium get scrubbed? That might have been years ago already at this point
