Coach Search Options after Autry

Also some solid jobs that are upgrades over Siena might not be open yet, depending on how the hiring cycle goes. For instanace if the smoke is true and Hodgson is all but locked in then the USF job would be open. So the basic list will adjust when the first round of hires are made, and there will be more options that are better opportunities than Siena.

Yes, if you’ve been following the cycle, people have been saying for months that unless we have some surprise retirements, it’s going to be a down year.

That being said, Providence, in the current state of the sport, is a much better job than some people here seem to think. They have a lot of NIL, and that’s attractive for any candidate.
I hear you about the NIL. At least in the near term. But PC has never been more than a middling BE program that could occasionally catch lightning in a bottle. Their fundamental challenges are and will still be there. I don’t think they will ever be the equal of even a lower tier P4 program in terms of attractiveness.

Siena has second most NIL in MAAC behind Iona. Makes the job attractable to stay at imo. G-MAC prolly feels like he can finish at top of the conference every year which would eventually lead him to a nice job. No need to rush to a Boston College type of school.

And GMAC has young kids. That matters too.

The history of the team holds little relevance anymore. This is the same reason why Syracuse isn’t considered the job we all want to believe it is.

If you invest in the team like they are nobody cares about the struggles in the past (before NIL). It’s a much better job than you’re giving it credit for.

Not much going on downtown, but the Arena is a professional facility. Historically, Albany just won't support a professional minor league team in any team for an extended period of time.

I’m local too but haven’t seen anything recently. Did the idea for a semi-pro soccer team and stadium get scrubbed? That might have been years ago already at this point

I wouldn’t bet against GMAC getting a P5 offer this year. He might sit for a year for a better offer, but that’s a dangerous bet. Siena might not be as good next year.
If he makes the NCAA Tournament in his second year, I personally believe he should be a viable candidate for the Syracuse job.

I am not saying he should be the #1 candidate, but I think it would be penny wise and pound foolish not to strongly consider him.

Also, will AW support him at another school as he does at Siena?
His NIL allowed Gerry to keep Doty and hopefully to keep Doty and Folefac for next year.

Wonder if AW would go to AC for the title game.
JB as well for that matter - supposedly they have remained close.

Etan talking about AdamW and NIL Well, there is nothing stopping Adam from donating to NIL right now. He doesn't want that. He doesn't contribute to NIL. He wants his money to go where he wants it to go. That is his right. But the school isn't out of bounds in wanting it to regulate how their athletes are paid. Etan has his agenda. It doesn't always if ever mesh with what the University wants.
I don’t agree with everything Etan posts/tweets. I do respect his views, he is well spoken and passionate about Social issues whether you like what he says or not . I personally don’t have a strong position on the Weitsman saga because I have no idea what went on behind closed doors. We sure could use some $$$$ but as you mentioned there has to be some give and take .

Yes he may want them educated in the cradle of academia here in the boston area. There’s like 15 good prep and catholic schools within 30 mile radius of bc.

Getting paid has to be his first goal. Not waiting for 2 years to become an irrelevant hc who may have down years after this year.

Would bet my life on the fact that a paycheck is not Gerry’s first concern right now. At all.

And secondly, people don’t care about fancy catholic schools. They care about not moving their kids around every three years. BC is a dead man’s job everybody knows it. Can’t compete financially and no Boston sports fans give a crap about it.

Just dead wrong, like usual.

I have a doctorate in being wrong. Let’s see how bad a pick they make. Curious how dead it is. But the schools are good. Highest AP scores in the country here in Massachusetts.

One of the most perplexing things to me amidst all of what happened with Red still is the hiring of Engelstad.

As a former HC going to be an AC you are immediately intrigued not to mention he had two solid portal prospects who then both went to UGA which was a massive womp womp and you immediately wonder what is the point even then.

Beyond keeping Griff who is a best friend of Red and those kind of relationships often don’t workout well this hire still bewilders me. He’s been mostly a ghost publicly in his entire tenure here beyond being in social media posts and we’ve not seen one positive contribution as a fanbase.

He was brought here for the sole reason of getting leffew and failed doing that.

Who? I said awhile ago they could replace him with a random fan and no one would know the difference.

Happy for Gerry, and he’s doing a really solid job at Siena, but people here are completely overestimating his stock.

Providence is going to be one of the best openings of the cycle. They are not hiring Gerry, and they won’t even give him a call. From what I know about BC, he’s not one of the names there right now either.

The next logical step for Gerry is probably an A-10 job.
This is what I was saying. Thank you for reiterating the point. Gmac is a legend to us and some of the national media, but he’s not at all ready for a P5 job. He’s only in year 2. I would be shocked if he got one this year, barring a crazy NCAA tourney run. He should move up to the A-10 if a good gig becomes available. And Siena has NIL support because of Gmac, so they should be good the next few years in terms of getting talent and his stock will improve.

Right - massive waste of a coaching slot and for two critical years. I just don’t get it.

I think JW required Red to add an experienced assistant after the losing season and Englestad fit that bill as a former HC and defensive specialist...

I am not sure how much Red actually delegates tactics to his assistants, however, so questionable whether Englestad actually got a puncher's chance to install and manage the defense?? Anyone know for sure?? If he did, it went fully off the rails...

There are so many red wasn’t ready jokes but I won’t make them. Gerry is ready. Just like Bob Chesney was ready jumping from holy cross to Syracuse. Some guys are ready before it seems like they are ready.

Bernie fine was never ready and he sat on a bench for 5-6 US Presidents

BH is in year 3.
