Coach Search Options after Autry

You got a few years on me. I played from 85 to 88. Looking back I thought Doc was old when he retired when in reality he was 57 or so. I'm older than that now. Crazy how we look at things when we are younger. When he retired he gave away a lot of old stuff (Jerseys) that he had in the storage room in back of his office. I'll run the campus when I'm in Oswego a few times a month. I can assure you that very little has changed at Laker since the day you left.

Am I reading this right - did you play ball at Oswego in the late 80s?

I really feel strongly that the 10 mil mark does not matter, it's where we line up against our peer programs. We will never compete with Duke and UNC or Louisville in NIL ok whatever...

We have to compete with Virginia/SMU/Miami/NCState/Clemson in Basketball NIL though. We cannot fall below this cut line. We need to be in the mix with these teams. If UVA and Miami and SMU are spending 12 mil next year on a roster we need to as well. The actual dollar amount does not matter if we lose guys to VT or Wake or FSU or worse the west coast teams...

Agents talk and players do too. We cannot stay in a 3rd tier of NIL spending in the ACC, sure with coaching we will be in the tourney, but I don't want a HC that is cool with an 8-10 seed in the tourney every year. I want to compete at the top of the ACC which we have never done.
Agreed. That's why I threw up $10 million. That would have us, as of now, in the top third of ACC schools. We'll be fine as long as we're in the top third.

I've watched too much pro sports to not know that you don't have to be a market setter in spending. You simply need to be competitive enough and be smart about how you allocate your resources.

That's the job of the HC.

The day Boeheim's successor is likely fired, and we're rehashing how the end of JB's tenure transpired *again*

I wonder why so many fans want a fresh start...
If Hodgson (or someone outside the family) is the hire and doesn't get in the top 25 year one, the "keep it in the family" folks are going to be calling for his head. If it wasn't annoying already, it's just going to get worse.

If Hop is the hire all this NIL talk will. not. matter.

I don’t agree we will never compete financially with Duke, UNC, Louisville. An all cylinders firing top-25 Syracuse squad can absolutely compete. Donors just need to feel their money is not going to waste.

I'm actually surprised that there aren't more billionaire alumni of the Ivy's demanding they go FBS. Truly take college football back 100+ years.
Institutionally there is zero appetite at the Ivies to compete that way. Less than zero.

What's far more likely, IMHO, is that someone, someday, bankrolls a low major. A fabulously wealthy alum of a Liberty or Tulsa in football, or a Grand Canyon or Incarnate Word in hoops, throws millions at the program to be a title contender. For kicks.

Which leads back to why we hired Red 3 years ago. The retort to those folks is that we tried it your way and it was a catastrophe.

Rumor I heard a few days ago was that Hopkins agent was negotiating a contract with su. All figures were in agreement minus the nil money he felt the school needed to guarantee to turn the program around. If this is true which this sources usually is then we maybe disappointed in the coaching hire. I doubt bh comes here if the nil funds are lacking. A good coach is not coming here to not be competitive and have every resource that’s needed.
How does this only have 4 reactions?

We had a poll here and like 4 people out of 100 wanted Hop or Gmac as coach…They wouldn’t be anything more than a very vocal minority.

The problem was who we hired in the family, not that they were in the family.
But I do think TPTB thought lets take the most experienced assistant and give it to them.
No looking at the other assistants and what they could do, no serious look at outside candidates, lets just turn the page.
That was a catastrophic decision.

Billionaire rivals taking on low major schools and turning them into national powers would make a great tv show.

I suspect there's a LOT more McNamara support out there in the fanbase than is represented on this board.

No one wants Hopkins.
Especially now that they can watch his team tonight on ESPN2 fighting for the championship and an NCAAT bid.
If, If, we stay inside the family it should be GMAC. Not Hop.

But I think for everyone's sanity they should do an outside hire. BH, Schertz, whatever.
I personally think GMAC has the ability to turn our team around but it would be a huge ask for many of the fan base to trust someone else from the Boeheim tree.
These last 2 years have just been soul crushing.

You certainly have cart blanch to produce them; anytime. Go for it!
Sorry, too busy trying to figure out the max sertraline dosage a human body can tolerate. Bracing for Hop.

Edit: it's 200 mg.

As someone who heard Hopkins from a source a few days ago (and certainly didn’t want to hear it) I really agree with this post. I think a lot of former basketball alumni/people currently within the program kinda feel Hopkins as their last chance per se. And it excited them to hear his name remotely in the conversation which led to some smoke blowing. I think that with a new AD coming in, JW and certainly the new AD, aren’t going to feel as obligated to make those people happy as much as one would think. I hope (and it sounds like from this board), that decision makers are starting to see that Hodgson clearly is what this program needs. As much as my source nearly made me faint hearing Hopkins, I think that it’s very strikingly similar to the Dan Mullen situation. That very first rumor like that oftentimes runs its course before hiring time.

Just my two cents, but there is def a Hopkins buzz within good sources which is scary.

My money is with Hodgson.

100% spot on, across the board.

While I don't want Hop, I won't give up on the program. I would never give up on the program. I have been a fan for 50 years. I would have to have faith that Hop can do somethiing he could not do at Washington. I would welcome him back, and support him to the best of my ability. Would I be dissapointed, yes, but not devastated.

If Hop is in contract negotiations that sounds like we're way past the rumor stage.
