There will be very little improvement to our recruiting until we can get a coaching staff that can "recruit". Right now we have probably 3 or 4 that does a good job but that is not enough. Until they replace Martin as QB coach , we won't see much if any improvement there, family or no family he has to be moved out. Its going to be very interesting who he, HCDB hires as DC. Again should be one who can help get top recruits.

I think SU needs to make a change at QB coach and the first call should go to Brent Vigen from Wyoming. The guys can see talent. Recruited and coached Wentz at North Dakota State, recruited Eric Dungey to Wyoming before he flipped to SU and developed Josh Allen into a first round draft pick. He has instant credibility of working with less and developing level NFL QBs that were drafted in the top 10.

An OC/DC/STC/OL need to be able to coach. All other assistants need to be recruiters. If they aren’t getting it done in recruiting, they should be let go immediately.
I keep beating this drum that recruiting has a lot more to do with the assistants knowing how to build relationships with players that are coveted by numerous P5 schools than any inherent disadvantage the program is saddled with. This staff has never had to recruit at this level and they seem out of their depth save for the obvious exceptions. You see it at other schools where a new staff comes in and they immediately upgrade the recruiting haul. Geographic proximity to talent is not the reason that Georgia Tech has the #24 class after years of mediocrity.

If Dino and him have never been on the same staff or have no known relationship then that's not happening. Sucks but based on all available evidence it is what it is.

Bringing in better recruiters will defiantly help but SU will never be a school that consistently recruits in the top 30. For them to be successful the coaches needs to land some 4 stars and fill most the classes with high end three stars than find some diamonds in the rough and develop them. SU also needs to continue to upgrade the talent with transfers. Transfer have been big for us since Babers got here and SU needs to continue that success.

Anyone remember this article about how we landed David Summers?

We didn't out-recruit Maryland the new coaching staff actually didn't want him, he literally fell into our lap.

We needed a rival school, Pitt, to make the referral and we were lucky due to Landan Salem's father being on the Pitt staff because we weren't out doing the work. If we didn't get Summers due to the Pitt coach doing a solid for his son, who would we have picked up last year?

Look who met with the kid and whose name is missing. Why was the DC there of all people and not the QB coach?

Bad example. State of Georgia has 37 4 and 5 star recruits available and then 194 3 star guys. New York has 2 low 4 stars and then 17 3 stars available. It would be dumb not to think that is an outrageous disadvantage. Tech was just a moronic place previously due to a staff running a 1960s offense. They should always be able to have a recruiting class somewhere between 20-35 just out of dumb luck even if they are taking the 3rd tier kids in the state after Georgia cherry picks and then the rest of the top tier SEC teams come in and clean up the 2nd tier. We don't have anything remotely like that available to us which is why we need some serious recruiters on the staff which we have 1 of currently.

Agree about Georgia, but surprised Nebraska class was ranked 20th in the ESPN+ rating. Not exactly a hotbed of talent.

1. We were not recruiting a QB in the 2019 class
2. Then Amie transfers two weeks before signing day and we had to scramble for a QB
3. Coaches mostly recruit areas, not positions. Like Nick Manore recruits FL and NY City, not DBs and I believe Ward recruited Conn, not Martin
Sure we got lucky that Maryland changed coaches and ignored this kid
I don't think ANYONE ever said we out recruited MD on this kid
We get you HATE the QB coach but come on this rant was way off base

1. We should always recruit a qb every class. There is too much turnover and injury at the position not to.

2. Amie's transfer was due to grades. Are you telling me they were caught completely off guard regarding that? Aren't these kids assigned tutors and assistants that should be monitoring their progress and making sure players are in good standing.

3. Recruiting areas and not position is pretty weird. Kids want to make a connection with the coach that will be coaching them, not the DC when you’re a qb. It also seems like an ineffective use of time to the position coach/DC to be doing outreach and relationship building to players on the other side of the ball to their specialty. If I was a position coach I would want to be talking to players that would directly impact my ability to keep my job, not relying on another position's coaches ability to bring me recruits. What value was Brian Ward bringing to that in home visit with a qb?

What area does Martin recruit? I went to his 247 page and looked for recruits and there were zero.

years of mediocrity running a wishbone. Give me a break. They couldn’t sell that to anybody but RBs and maybe some linemen. If HCDB was at GT with the same staff they’d be ranked #24 to.

If NYS had 150 power 5 kids and 37 four star kids you don’t think our class might be ranked a little higher ?

One suburb of Atlanta probably has more talent than all of NYS

Yes I agree much easier to get kids from Georgia to come to Syracuse than Georgia Tech. Seriously what planet are you living on? You build all the relationships you want but most kids play closer to home.

Years of mediocrity? Johnson had a pretty nice run at GT. yeah it was time for a change. but come on.

What's baffling is that Kirk Martin was a very successful HS coach in Texas. His connections down there are vast and his name is well known.

I understand that the kids down there don't want to come up north, but there's ample opportunity here. They're all hopeful that UT, OU, TAMU, etc come calling. I'd gladly take a few of these kids every year who are the next rung down.

Gotta be a QB down there with a name like Gunner, Shooter, Colt, Blaine, Maverick, Slinger or Missiles McGee that is looking for a chance to be a P5 QB.

So when it comes to recruiting Lynch, Lustig, and Cavanaugh should get an exception. There main focus should be Xs and Os. That being said according to 247 their names showed up quite often.

Of the other coaches (according to 247):

Monroe showed up 5x (keep)
Standard 4x (keep)
Ferri 1x (if he didn’t have higher numbers prior years, he should go)
McCloud 1x (ditto)
Martin 0.0x (What?)
Reynolds 0.0x (see Ferri)

My kingdom for a Missiles McGee

1. I was just stating what they said, sure getting a QB each class is ideal
2. Clearly they didn't know he was going to transfer or they would have went after a kid harder, but have been is grades where boarderline or something...we will never know
3. They do it by region so the coaches can develop a relationship with the schools. You are not making any in roads to school if it's a random face that shows up each time. Maybe Ward had a relationship with the school beforehand. I trust Dino bringing Ward over your opinion of how to recruit

I have no idea of what area Martin recruits
I do feel overall the staff needs help in recruiting

GT does have challenges on the academic front. Tough majors and very few major options.*

* I live in the Atlanta metropolis and my oldest son is a Tech grad.

Very true and if we lived in such a world, Albany, buffalo, and stony brook might be p5 schools as a result, lol.
