Colgate Postgame

Thought the final number was around 600k for Kadary.

Eddie's counting stats were great, he was absolutely sloppy though, he was a major reason they had 20+ transition points and Woodward absolutely worked him the last 10 minutes of the game when he actually played. Woodward's 4th is the only reason we won.

Three listed TOs...he needs to tighten it up. The pass to Davis was one of the better things I've seen out of an SU big in a while.

You sure? Thought Kadary was a 7 figure guy and Eddie a little more than half that.

And he got 15-12-5 tonight. Not his fault they tried to throw him an alley oop.

Our defense stinks and needs to get better. I completely agree with that part.

Kadary what definitely offered a large NIL deal. Don't know about 7 figures but certainly more then a few hundred K

I get why he’s pulling Freeman because he isn’t defending, etc.

but how can Red sit there and play Carlos for 30 mins and look at stare Freeman in the face and tell him to play better D

Too add not just Carlos but how can he pull anyone for not playing defense because they all don't play D. Is he just trying to make an example of our most talented player? I think we were up 13 or whatever it was and pulled Freeman with everyone else and that is when the lead went away and then we almost lost and Freeman never played again.

Even if he was playing terrible defense get him on the block and let him go to work because he can score down there and I think the problem with our offense right now is nobody is really looking for their own shot. We are just passing and cutting and then dumping down low nobody is being aggressive to do anything with the ball. JJ and Moore showed it some but our big guys are pass first guys.

Because the coaches believe he was the answer to the PG problem... It was reported here when we signed him by a couple board ITKs that the staff was very excited about landing Carlos in particular.

They were expecting to give him the keys.

It would be a big swing and miss if he's not even good enough to start.

Red needs to tell this young man to work his game inside out. Freemen settles for fallaways and threes to easy. If he would post up more often, he’d get the ball. He spends too much time on the perimeter.
He can score at will against these teams if he posts up...found that odd.

I think the point is the first two games point to exactly that. Being in a 40 min knife fight with Lemoyne and Colgate and a defense that would make Greg Robinson blush doesn't scream 20 wins much less a bubble tourney team.

I worry about the defense, I don't worry about Red running rotations out there in bigger games like it's CYO and everyone must have minutes.

I know.

do you think the other players can’t see he doesn’t defend?

I would be interested to know if that is coaching or Freeman? There isn't much room down there with Lampkin and if Red wants to run the 4 out and 1 in offense like what was said last year how/where is Freeman supposed to be?

Plain and simple, guys aren’t getting coached up on the fundamentals. How to defend ball screens, closing out, stopping penetration, help side rotations, etc. On top of that, the effort is piss poor. There have been countless times over the last year and two games this year where guys get torched on D with little to no effort, and Autry does nothing other than sometimes throw up his hands in exasperation. If he allows poor effort/execution to happen in games with no consequences (ie. ass, meet bench), I’ve got to believe the same thing happens in practice. Guys can play hard and intense in practice but still not get better if they aren’t being coached up and held accountable for the little things. It’s like 5 guys trying to guard their man (which they all do poorly) instead of 5 guys playing team defense. Starling and Carlos might be the worst high major defensive guard tandem in the nation. This Colgate team isn’t anywhere near as good as the teams they brought in the last 3 years. They missed so many open shots/layups too or it would have been a double digit loss. And I believe Lemoyne was missing 2 STARTERS! Autry needs to prove he can actually coach, not just recruit. Cuse basketball just continues to disappoint.

I dont think I am going to rewatch the game this time but the use of Freeman is bizarre. If I remember correctly we threw it to him twice on the block and he scored both times and then despite constantly feeding the ball to Lampkin and Davis we didn't continue to feed Freeman in the post. He can clearly score down there and is aggressive kind of strange we didn't keep going to him.
He‘s on the perimeter too much, he is more effective in the paint right now. He took 7 shots, 3 were from 3 and he was 0-3 there. I hope he works more inside out. I would like to see more sets with him down low.

We love touting 20 wins, but if people think Red’s heading towards the hot seat we should start being honest with ourselves - Red won 19 games last year. A D2 win doesn’t count in the eyes of the ncaa, same as exhibitions dont count.

Yup he will get year 3 100% because Melo will want his kid to play for him but this looks like a disaster. I hope he turns it around but right now Red doesn't look like a head coach
I don’t think Melo has that kind of loyalty to Autry.Red not coaching isn’t a deal breaker.

Agreed, the rotations will inevitably tighten (Cuffe and the Wind Sock are already essentially done) but defensively this team looks like a disaster and the ball iq looks the worse I can remember and that's saying something with some of the last few JB Era teams

Is anyone really surprised we built a team using a bunch of low D1 and mid major players, or role players from average P5 programs that are now struggling to beat low to mid-major programs?

Talent evaluation and portal recruiting has to be called into question.
No problem, top players are dying to come here. Dumb coaches must be turning them away. Dumb players have to settle for Duke or UCon.

But it’s HCJAB’s fault.

Amiright?

I agree with you that our defense can make many guys look good. I think he is a player though.
Honestly, I think he's fast. Aside from that, he's a Colgate player. If we can't do better than him, we are done.

I’ll exclude Carlos because he clearly had a lower profile, but the rest of these guys were wanted by top power 5 teams. To me a lot of it comes down to our coaching staff doesn’t look like they have a clue. Maybe GMac really was holding it together somewhat last year.
