Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

The Pomeroy Foundation is based in Syracuse.
ah, shoot. I must have missed that in the article. I got the impression that it wasn't a biased operation though and that they have clear guidelines on what can be included on signs they plan to post around the country. Thanks for the update on that and sorry Fly Rodder, I was mistaken

Hot take ... I think salt potatoes are overrated and Syracuse is trying too hard to make them a thing (outside of Syracuse).

You’re right. Unless you place them in an air fryer/convection oven after you boil them or use them for home fries. Then they are amazing

When I had my seafood brokerage business I knew John Hinerwadel and did a lot of business with him. I remember going to Wegman's corporate headquarters in Rochester with him when he was trying to get them to stock his salt potatoes. He was a good guy. Died a few years back. Loved his model trains.

Wegmans was moving away from many things that they would eventually sub their own brand on. Mixed feelings.

He told me that he would buy the potatoes from various sources. He would usually start with potatoes from the mid-Atlantic and work his way up the coast as summer progressed. The potatoes would vary depending on where and when he bought them.

You're right about the salt crust.
Was he responsible for the toy train that used to ride around the DeWitt store?

I'm so sick of these NYC-based landlords driving out longtime businesses.

omg, this is terrible, terrible news. Whatever replaces Tusk will fall to the same fate as the guy who tried to replace JRyans is going to be my guess. Too many loyal customers of the Tusk are not going to take this well and will avoid it if it becomes something similar.

God Damnit

And people like me who come to Armory Square when we visit specifically for that place. UGH.

One of my very favorite lunch spots. And one that I haven't been to in 16 months because of the pandemic.

That's gotta change this week.

Nothing like having a noontime pint, cup of bisque, and Bonzai Beef in one of those booths while reading a newspaper and listening to the Dead.

Love the Tusk, but figured something was up when I was there recently and they had about 10 beers on tap compared to their usual 50.

Looking at their online menu, they're still not serving lunch on Monday and Tuesday (so they don't have that amazing pulled chicken/fresh mozz/mushroom Tuesday sandwich special), and standards like Pigs in Zen, Hello Piggy, and the Lobster BLT (overrated, IMO) are gone.

Bonzai Beef is still the Friday special, and Bangkok Pig is still on the menu, though.

I heard from someone that the 25-year lease is going to the landlord's kids, who want to open a wine and cheese bar in the space.

Cue Chris Rock: "grand opening? grand closing!"

I do continue to think that there's a huge opportunity for an enterprising bar owner in downtown. No Clark's, no J. Ryan's, no Empire, no Tusk = need for a normal bar. With the pandemic easing up, there's going to be untapped demand.

Hops Spot and Evergreen somewhat fill that void, but there is definitely room for more IMO.

Good for the Evergreen IMO.

don’t think the landlord’s the major issue here

I haven't been to Hops Spot in way too long, but in my experience they are guaranteed to be out of my first three beer choices. It's uncanny. I do tend to think of it as a restaurant with good beer rather than a bar.

Is their Phlow space open yet?

Good for the Evergreen IMO.

Yeah, I'm happy for them, it hasn't been an easy year.

I don't know? I do know that he had a very impressive collection of model trains. He showed me some photos of the layout. Had to be worth some bucks.

I'm just guessing, but I think he would have been reluctant to let anyone mess with his trains. Collectors can be like that.

Sht, I'm going to have to make a trip out there just to go to Tusk one more time.
