Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Yeah every time I drive by there, that building looks more ready to collapse onto West St. Wasn't there a redevelopment plan for that property at one point? I seem to remember there being one until one of the buildings collapsed some time ago.

Not sure; they were shopping it for potential hotel development prior to the collapse.

The remainder of the building had very good bones (which is the only reason it's still standing), but it's obviously shedding brick like crazy. Apparently there's a lot of waterlogged cork on the inside; this was the insulation when it was a cold storage warehouse.

It's a fantastic site and a great building, but there are some problems behind the scenes.

I know you're tied in with this stuff; are you familiar with the background on this one?
No, unfortunately not, but I drive past it a lot. I figured you would have some insight. I always thought it would get some attention sooner or later since the collapse and its location at a major interchange.

They've been in litigation with the City for a few years regarding the asssessment (after they purchased it from the City for $11,000 many years ago). And apparently they've applied for the State's brownfield cleanup program in the past few weeks. But there's been no apparent movement toward redevelopment.

They did some nice work in Utica a few years ago, so they're capable, but I'm thinking another developer probably would have put this property into productive use by now.

After a little digging, looks like it's this group?

I found their brownfield development application. Looks like the redevelopment plans aren't very advanced:

PROPOSED USE
BIG RED DEVELOPMENT SITE
400 ERIE BOULEVARD WEST,
CITY OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK

The proposed re-development project is anticipated to be mixed commercial and multi-family residential. Development as detached single-family use is not anticipated. Future development will require a zoning change, but will be consistent with future land use, historic preservation, bicycle, and sustainability plans within the City of Syracuse Comprehensive Plan 2040. Neighboring properties are currently zoned commercial, central business district, and residential.

None of these "high end apartments" downtown have balconies, except the former phone co. building across from City Hall. Huge missed opportunity for developers.

I'd be willing to bet that historic preservation standards have a lot to do with that. Plus, these are already pricey renovations, and I'm sure that would add a good chunk more to it.

Too bad they can't bring back what used to be there:

For the North Siders. I'm not familiar with this place, but new life coming to the old Bob Barker's:

They've got a spicy chicken pizza that's pretty good. Deep menu, fairly average quality, nice people. They cut their pies Syracuse-style, for those who like that kind of thing.

About a decade ago there was a BBQ place in the Bob's Barkers building that was banging. Way better than Dino. Don't know what became of them. For a place whose restaurant scene is kind of associated with famous BBQ, it's a shame that Syracuse doesn't actually have any great BBQ. Guess everyone's afraid to go after the king. Unfortunately the king has gout and is inbred.

Hammi’s! They still do events in the area, including the NYS Fair and Taste of Syracuse:

Btw it’s not Syracuse, but if you ever find yourself in Watkins Glen, I really enjoy Nickel’s Pit BBQ.

Stopped there Labor Day weekend 2018 with a very sad/overtired 15-month-old.

People were nice and the food was good, but the circumstances definitely overshadowed the food. It's worth another try.

This woman is 79, why doesn't she hire someone to find a facility to make these for her? We'll never have Grandma Brown's again, I'll be shocked if she gets her factory up and going at all. Sell the recipe or hire a company to make and market these ffs

"The factory shut down about a year ago, blamed on a lack of workers.

In the year since the owner has said all she needs to do is hire staff. Her initial promised timeframe to reopen came and went.

To check on the product’s status, NewsChannel 9 visited the factory.

79-year-old Sandra Brown, Grandma Brown’s granddaughter, didn’t want to do an interview on camera but briefly answered a few questions.

She says staffing shortages are still the problem but she’s in the process of interviewing prospective workers. When asked, she would not set a timeline on the product’s availability."

Syracuse, N.Y. — For the past four years, Stout Beard Brewing Co. has operated a brewhouse on one side of Syracuse and a taproom on the other.

Now, it’s consolidating the two and relocating them to Liverpool. Stout Beard’s new home will be in a part of the former Lakeview Bowling Center, at 715 Old Liverpool Road. The bowling center closed in 2019.

That means Stout Beard will soon close its taproom in the Westcott Street area and its beer production facility on West Fayette Street."

That might be a better location for expanding brewery capacity, but I'm not too sure it's a better location for a taproom.
